Surf is Junichi Masuda's favorite move, so he gave it to rhydon and the others. But he didn't allow us to use water pokemon to use surf without HM03. Would have been cool if other pokemon could use surf using the HM but water pokemon were exceptions. Too late now.

@@0927kira Well, if your idea of "expansive" is just "make Pokemon as big as Breath of the Wild or Skyrim," then no, it's not expansive. It's not trying to be a massive open world game, and we're still probably a fair few years away from Pokemon even attempting such a thing, if ever. That being said, there's a lot to do in the wild area; searching for items, rotom rally, hunting for rare Pokemon, max raid battles, gathering berries, and so-on. Of course, I imagine that I'll probably just be dismissed and called a Game Freak apologist because I actually really enjoyed playing through Shield; my opinions probably don't mean much given that I don't care about the national dex or tree textures, and I don't care to try and compare Pokemon to every other JRPG franchise under the sun, despite the fatc that Pokemon has been steeped in design philosophies from as far back as generation one that it's been steadily trying to break away from for years now.

@@GoldLight73 searching for items, gatherung berries, hunting pokemon, raid battles literally the only new feature you gave is raid battles, and by expansive i highlighted the "interactions" because when gamefreak said openworld in 2019, a new console, i expected much more. I didnt want it to be big but rather i wanted it to be interactive. The pokemon visible in the wild was already in pokemon go P&E, what actually new did pokemon SWSH give to the open world aspect? considering how much larger of a franchise pokemon is to zelda its really upsetting how different the quality and effort put into those games are

You could pretty much use fly for everything out of the water: fly over a tree, a trainer, grass, rocks, boulders, rock climbs, hell even fly at the top of the league and break a window to fight the champion. Same goes for gyms.
