You left out the one, big "quiet part out loud" reason that the MAGA movement REALLY hates Taylor Swift: It isn't that she might officially endorse President Biden in particular or Democrats in general. Nor is it that Taylor Swift might take a public stand on any particular issue, much less eventually decide to run for office, herself. The real reason I think they fear her is that she's encouraging her fans (as well as anyone who will listen) to register to vote, and actually show up and participate on election day. Republican strategists have always been worried about massive voter turnouts as these tend to favor the Democrats. This is why voter suppression was a big part of the GOP's "Southern Strategy" devised by Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, and Lee Atwater. Simply by encouraging participation in the electoral process, Taylor Swift could be a real game-changer . . . . 400th like.

Conservatives have a long and storied history of manipulating resentment of popular youth culture, specifically musicians the kids like, to get the old farts who are angry that music isn’t like it was in their day to vote for them. It’s why they panicked about Elvis’s hips, why they freaked out when John Lennon correctly pointed out that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus, it’s why they raged against rap music for decades. And it’s why they’re attacking Taylor Swift now. Banking on elder resentment towards stuff the kids like.

Yeah, I think people with kids have an advantage when it comes to being aware of pop culture. I started losing track of pop music in the late 90s/early oughts. FM radio changed, MTV changed & everything went digital download. We don't have kids & I'm not big into social media (no IG or Tiktok) so don't know thru personal experience what/who is popular at all times with young kids, tweens & teens. (TBH, even when I was a teen/twenty something, I was kind of into what I was into & not very conscious of what other people liked) I don't get mad about pop culture or what's trending, I'm just blissfully unaware 😊 & prefer to focus on my niche interests.

Reminds me of an older couple that I recently met on a ski lift in Colorado. They were very friendly. We were talking about where we all had come from - they were from a Portland, OR suburb. They earnestly admonished us not to go to Portland - that we would be knifed on the bus or short on the subway. They very literally advised us that our very lives would be imperiled should we visit that place. I guess their impression of the place had fallen considerably during all of the unrest. Meanwhile my sister lives in Portland. I remember asking her how bad things were during all police brutality riots. She said that with the exception of like two city blocks which you easily avoid, it was a literally business as usual. She's a single young woman, ostensibly the sort of person who would be most vulnerable to actual threats to life and limb, and she was totally unphased.

Low key suggesting the 'great replacement theory' may not be a conspiracy theory afterall and that they're doing that to football to bring in new fans to replace a shrinking nfl fanbase. That Taylor Swift has no talent and that 'unlike the Beatles, nobody will know who she is in 200 years.' All because...what, 20 seconds or so of her being on screen during an hours long football game? Because she's trying to get people to vote? Because she might endorse the candidate they don't like?

I got asked why Americans care for American football while calling soccer boring, and the answer I came up with was optics. I said that with American football, you get the spectacle of large men in "protective" gear slamming into each other the entire time, while with soccer, you seem them sneaking up behind the target, tripping them, stealing the ball, and with lots - and I mean *_LOTS_* - of faking bad attacks on them in order to get the referee to penalize the opposing team and grant themselves a free kick or two. In other words, it looks like sh^t-tons of blatant cheating in soccer, and Americans see enough of that in our politics. And now you also have a better understanding about Tom Brady and Deflate-gate - the perception was that there was not supposed to be such blatant cheating at the game.

It's not just that... I think most older people (not just Republicans or conservatives, everyone) get stuck in time bubbles, where it was 'just last year' that the kids were in high school, or liked Reptar (from the Nickelodeon cartoon "Rugrats"), or couldn't stand broccoli... Time stands still regarding your kids and pop culture, because you either stop paying attention to it once the kids are grown and you are no longer bombarded with the latest craze (it's axolotls, amphibians also called mudpuppies, native to swamps that can live in water or wetlands, a native NJ creature that is now endangered because the swamps are endangered)... So the last time you might have heard of or about Taylor Swift was when Kanye West (or is he still calling himself Ye? Seriously, I might not respect anything about the man anymore, but he has a right to call himself whatever he wants and we as normal humans should respect his choice... I truly, in my own mommy bubble, have no idea, so apologies to all if I got it wrong) grabbed the mic from her hands on the Grammys broadcast and went on a screed of why Beyonce was better...the girl was a teen, receiving a very major award, and this bozo has to come on stage and try to upstage her, because the voters had made a different choice? Sound familiar? Anyways, to many of us, she will always be that lovely teen, and that little girl is already 30-something. She grew up...how dare she! It was just last year she was big! Our little girl, dating this big brute of a man, from the wrong team??? Or this little hussy, going to wreck and ruin our guy before the big game??? Or, these Hollywood types should just sing and shut up, and not give opinions and tell us what to think! That's what it comes down to... Time has marched on, and we fooled ourselves into thinking it stood still, like we did... THAT'S what this is about! It was only last year that she was a big deal!

Will? It already has. Look at the Qanon politicians that were elected to the GOP. 25 years of FOX, and Republican gaslighting and fear-mongering and more open and pervasive lying, has primed demographics of generations to be easily disinformed and more entrenched in their nonsense ideology ... and they've now gotten themselves elected (through the hateful piss and vinegar they've been ginned up on) into the GOP. Just look at Gropert, she learned to lie so quickly, only it's still at a high school drop-out level. Or MTG, who has learned to live the lie and lie to live, and walk that fine line between being a faithful Qanon believer and publicly denouncing Qanon when cornered.

I read a great article about the Marilyn Monroe / Joe DiMaggio "marriage of the century," which honestly just made me appreciate the march of progress-not only is there no squicky age gap between Swift and Kelce, but _I can't even imagine_ their relationship falling apart if Swift didn't want to give up her career and become a housewife. I'd be hard pressed to care less about the love life of these two celebrities who work in genres in which I have minimal investment, but I'm glad to see these two model a healthier dynamic than our parents or grandparents had in the '50s.

To me, a European who is only marginally interested in American politics because it's always so over-the-top, annoying, and loud, "I am the shadow you have cast upon yourselves and to my darkness there shall be no end" sounds like the most reasonable thing I have ever heard a Republican (or parody thereof) say. Though the sentence also uses an unconventional and thus somewhat more difficult to understand structure, so a Republican would probably not say it because his voters would probably not understand it.

Those albums were my introduction to her, and they blew me away. I then went down the T Swift rabbit hole and discovered that I actually like pop music….. at least when Swift is performing it. I highly recommend giving Folklore and Evermore a spin when you have some time to kill. They’ll surprise you. If you don’t enjoy them after giving them an open minded listen, then no harm, no foul.
