A common beginner mistake when hitting the heavybag is poor connection, which causes the bag to spin. This can be avoided by improving the accuracy of your punches and kicks, moving with the bag, and utilizing a proper follow through.

Sugar Ray Leonard's bag used to spin all the time. he used to spin it more intentionally. i am not saying you are wrong. its the sweet science. but if you work your bag with that principle, you need to always punch your hooks from a certain angle and distance. that ruins the creativity of your hooks. in real matches not all punches are gonna be perfect.

Depends on how your elbow makes contact really, side elbows are suited for close range combat so in an ideal scenario I'd want my opponent to be struck off balance so that I can follow through. So I'd say that a perpendicular point of contact will be the best to hit them with the most force and any other variants at an acute or obtuse angle would just have compensated with the tangential spin which still may be impactful but not the most effective.

Hello Shane, I first want to say that what you are doing with these videos are great. They are really helpful in not only helping people learn how to defend themselves and to enhance their martial arts training but also in educating them on respect and taking responsibility for how they use their skills. I am writing this message to give a video recommendation. I am really interested in the mental side of martial arts and I watched your video on flow state which has helped me in being more skilful. I saw your short instagram story on Lucid dreaming and how you said it has helped you prepare for fights. Could you make a video expanding more on how to enter a lucid dream and how to train a fight in your dream? I was thinking about sending you an email asking this but I didn't know if that was appropriate or not since you must have hundreds or emails from your fans. Thanks again for the videos, Parkour

For even more precision you can try to let it spin + swing randomly like crazy and see if you can strike it cleanly to stop its motions. I use to do that with a basketball or football bouncing around and that was hard in the beginning to strike it strait without it spinning.

It doesn't have to really be leaves because there aren't any tree that drop leaves like they do in Ippo's case. Maybe get you and coach PJ to sprinkle pieces of simatrical paper or something. Or party confetti. The challenge would be catching the second leaf.

@brynwhitehead1731
@brynwhitehead1731 5 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ. If you're punching through your target as you should the heavy bag inevitably spins if it's just you in the room. Because, unlike a person who falls back due to their being rooted to the ground the bag which is almost equally weighted is rooted to the ceiling. Example: Throw a hook. If the point of the exercise is to practice form and defensive mechanics, fine. But, realistically. You're going to get some spin.
@Ghost572
@Ghost572 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, all my power goes into punches that can cause turning hence why the bag is turning like mad depending on where I hit it. I do get what he means about turning though because if it glanced it on the sides it would spin around but its still possible to get some spin with a good amount of power.

Bullshit, if you making the bag spin means you are training glancing shots, and this is good for two reasons, 1) glancing shots can be more devastating to opponent and hurt them more and can be less jarring for you and help you pin point and improve your aim 2) it is good training for you recovering your strikes from misses and glances better, a lot of people focus too much on power instead of speed and composure/recovery. Regaining your strikes back to guard is extremely important, and glancing shots helps train that if you focus on that
@fighttips
@fighttips 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! You're right that not every shot has to be a power shot, and it's good to flow with your punch combinations, but by definition "glancing" means poor connection. If your punch slides off of someone's head or body, not only does that mean less damage done, but you will likely be out of position/off-balance. I think what you're referring to is a chipping punch on someone's chin -- but that still requires proper connection (which should be practiced by hitting the bag directly, and not sliding off). Hope this response makes sense 👍
@LovingTinha
@LovingTinha 5 жыл бұрын
@@fighttips yes i am calling it glancing blows but you can call it chipping shot, regardless. Such a shot can be practiced on a bag by aiming for the edge, and in a fight such a shot can knock someone out, not just to the chin, even to the head and temple, some great fighters have been dazed by such shots and it is enough to end the fight some even cause a knock out or the lead up to one. Because it rattles your nervous system greatly. Obviously a glancing shot is more effective when someone who has power does it im comparison to someone with low power. And sure it's not a common technique, but it sure is effective. For example have you ever tried to cork someone on the arm. It is a glancing shot that works better than a full connection shot. Because the impact is sharper and less absorbed. Same with hitting someone on the head or face.
