The U.S. is trying to counter China’s militarization of the Pacific by strengthening alliances and negotiating access to new military bases near Taiwan and the South China Sea. Closer ties with Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has helped the U.S. establish more major bases in the area.
WSJ’s Shelby Holliday traveled to the Philippines to see how the strategy is playing out on the ground.

It is the economy! STUPI. China invests in infrastructure and business to gain monetary return and influence, while US overborrows to waste money in military. Who is smarter? If China needs any resources, just trade. Why war? Stupid. US spent trillions of dollars in Afghanistan to replace Taliban with Taiban, and China spent money in improving the living standards of its people. Who is smarter? The military expenditure of China is only 1/3 of US. Should US reduce its military expenditure and spend the money on infrastructure and its poor people(build more social housing) ? 56% of Americans can't cover a $1,000 emergency expense with savings!! Reduce military expense can reduce the debt burden of the government. Can't just print money!

How is China insisting that Taiwan is A part of China, any different than america insisting that Cuba be under its control? The same can be said about Crimea, and to some degree Donbass. Considering that america stopped china from reuniting with Taiwan in 1948, doesn't that make america disingenuous about believing in one nation two systems? Even peaceful reunification doesn't make sense, since america acknowledges that Taiwan is A part of China, and america stopped China from reuniting with Taiwan before Taiwan was A concept of A sovereign nation. China was weak back then, so they could not apply justice for their interests, now they are not weak, and america wants WW3, because it is A declining power? The Chinese claim that the Philippines and the south koreans are client states of the US, without real sovereignty. It seems like A reasonable claim, why would Taiwan, or south Korea, or the Philippines, allow themselves to be destroyed, like the Ukraine, for an American empire, or A Chinese empire? How would it benefit South Korea for Seol to be destroyed? Or Taipe. In G-d I trust. The united states has dominated south america for centuries, they have overthrown many of their governments, and invaded many times. How is south east asia being dominated by the Chinese different?

Really? The Philippines is geographically closer to the USA and yet the USA sent 99% of its factories to China and the Philippines did not even get the scraps. Either you are part of the Marcos dictatorship who is also a puppet of the US government, or very rich. Either one, you do not speak for the majority of the people of the country. They know the USA ignored the country for decades. Only when China started annoying the USA hegemony in the past two years did the USA started to take notice of the Philippines. @@danielhutchinson6604 - If USA stumbles into an Asia war, the amount of money US military spends on these base upgrades and interoperability exercises will be well worth it. PS - Philippines as a country doesn’t have an abundance of natural resources so USA never “extracted” much wealth from the country. However, it does have great people that at times have been let down by its political system. Too bad the country has never had the reforms implemented to unleash all that potential.

in case of war i think among the Allied countries... South Korea is in the most dangerous position being connected to N. Korea and China through land. Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines are oceans away from China so it would be really be difficult for them to even reach them.

South Korean military power and difficult terrain do compensate for that in the short to medium term. Nobody who researched their forces would want to aggress them amongst area militaries without 5:1+ (lets get real 8:1 minimum for Chinese or NK forces) advantage in numbers that could actually be applied in the mountains and seas. When they say “y’all ready for this” in the club, Seoul always yells Yeah! But, you are right, they have to be.

LAL-LO Airport in Cagayan. I see what can happen there. In a hot situation in Taiwan, USAF aircrew can be flown in to LAL-LO and have it ready for F-22s a day later. The advantages are twofold. First, it shortens the flight time from Kadena AFB in Okinawa and secondly, no KC-135 tankers would be required coming and going. Just need to pre-position munitions in the airport under heavy guard (AIM-9X sidewinders and AMRAAMs).

US and Ukraine doesn't have a mutual defense treaty. Ukraine isn't even part of NATO and doesn't even have US military base. Vladimir Putin saw that Zelensky wants to join NATO, immediately grab the opportunity to invade Ukraine so they can't be part of it. but in the Pacific region, US have a decades old alliance treaty with the Philippines, had an old alliance with Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Australia. Philippines is a founding father of ASEAN which compose of Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand etc. India is an enemy of China. war games really. they gave all the advantage to china, they set the difficulty to extreme for the allied military preparedness. they are currently fixing all the rat hole in that simulation that's the only reason why they run it is to find mistakes. in the event of real war. Philippine army has been fighting for centuries way back WW2 up to the most recent islamic group ISIS. they just subjugated the last remnants of terrorist in the past weeks. Great video. Just one sticking point for me. Washington is focused heavily on Taiwan, is Manila? If there is a war over Taiwan, we will want to use our new bases in the Philippines. It's near an even match between China and the U.S. in the Pacific now . China has some advantages because of the numbers of ships and proximity to Taiwan . But the U.S. has bases in Japan , South Korea, and potentially the Phillipines that could greatly tip the balance of power greatly back toward U.S. in the next year. China vs. U.S. power in the Pacific theater is comparable, but China vs the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Aukus allies , and others combined , different outcome entirely . The combination of these American and allied forces could defeat the Chinese PRC/PLA and Navy, likely destroying over a third of China's shoddily built fleet, and setting China's CCP back 50 years . China would be SUICIDAL to attempt to fully attack Taiwan .

Do you forgot that Taiwan belongs to China according to UN voting and decision. China can use nuke in this situation, it is similar to Crimea to Ukraine. Not many ASEAN countries will help the US in the situation. China will take Taiwan, they have all the rights to do so. I think the UN the decision already made it clear, Taiwan was still a form of government after 1949 was not because they have people's support, they were there because the US military intervention of Chinese civil war. The US will never win in UN about anything with Taiwan. This is already a conclusion. If the US keep going this way, then the US is similar to Russia. Even the US itself recognize one China policy. Almost all EU countries voted one China policy. Playing a stupid double standard game in this situation can only bring the world to danger. I have to say that the US military's new strategy to counter China in the Pacific is long overdue. China's military buildup is astonishing, and it's not showing any signs of slowing down. It's impressive to some, but it's alarming to others. China has been expanding its presence in the South China Sea, which is a global shipping route full of natural resources. Taiwan, which is a key US trading partner, is also threatened by China's militarization. The US and its allies need to take action to change the balance of power in the Pacific. The new bases that the US has access to in the Philippines are crucial in this strategy. The Philippines is a US treaty ally, and the deal allows the US to build facilities, position equipment, and rotate troops through the bases. These new sites bring the US military closer to both Taiwan and the South China Sea. If a conflict occurs in Taiwan, the Philippines would be affected, and the control of the Luzon Strait, a strategic waterway that's a major commercial shipping lane, would be critical. The HIMARS, an offensive weapon system that's capable of reaching the southern part of Taiwan from the Philippines' northernmost islands, is a significant addition to the US's military capabilities. The live fire exercises of the HIMARS and other advanced American weapons mark a major escalation of the exercises from years past. China has been using the nine-dash line to roughly outline what it says belongs to China, and this offends Filipinos. It's like they always have a dagger pointed towards them. Overall, I believe that the US military's new strategy to counter China in the Pacific is necessary to protect US interests and its allies. However, it's crucial that the US and its allies act within the international-based, rules-based order in the region to prevent further escalation and conflict.

@@kucko2 You are right China is provoking war by claiming the high seas as its territory. If China tries to invoke that sovereignty by seizing ships, or denying transit, then it could very well provoke war. Also, China's threat to blockade Taiwan would be an act of war. When a country commits an act of war, it will likely get a warlike response. So, China better back down. Other nations won't.

The solution is not as simple. Expertise in strategy or operating tools of war matter little. The real issue deals with the US political strategy. US has a habit of winning battles but losing wars due to lack of commitment at political level along with lack of commitment from the host country populous. Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan are prime examples. To win against PRC, US will need more than a committed Taiwanese population, Japanese, South Koreans, Thailand, Philippines etc. would have to be willing to sacrifice their people and economy also.

The US is to help Pacific Islands to stave China's economic coercion and to address their needs: - illegal fishing - maritime security including UNCLOS, freedom of navigation and overflight, - undersea cables for reliable communications in reaction to Chinese expansionism, - shared values for democracy to flourish, - climate change.

@@harryteo7801 not exactly, Taiwan is currently a key exporter of semi-conductors. Ukraine’s most was wheat. Majority of the world has large demand for semis. So Taiwan is more vital in comparison

any chinese aggression against taiwan or in the region generally will be countered by a coalition including taiwan, philippines, australia, south korea, japan and the united states, with india likely aligning with them as well.

I am sure any aggression, 'Chinese' or otherwise, will be instigated by the USA, As ALWAYS. Chinese officials should be wary of any tricks or "WAR TRAPS" set up by Amerikka to induce a real hot war. Ex. Iraq (fake WMD threats), Sinking of the Maine (fake blast), Gulf of Tonkin incident (fake 'bombings' w pyrotechnics and falsified GI deaths), WW2 (US & Britain ringfenced all the oil, rubber, copper and other critical natural resources, preventing Japan fr accessing them for her vital industries. This led to Japan invading its neighbors for raw materials; and to the bombing of Pearl Harbor to debilitate Amerikka's Pacific defense forces. The Chinese don't want war, esp. now when they are seeing positive results from their productive tho uncompleted BRI (Belt & Road Initiative), wc d Evil Hegemon is determined to disrupt and destroy. The US military industrial complex and the Pentagon, make billions of $ more from WARFARE, than from building essential infrastructures for underdeveloped nations to lift themselves up from poverty !!

We can't totally rely on both India and South Korea esp when both have "friendly" neighbors of their own (China's definitely gonna take advantage of Pakistan and North Korea). Not only that, India will definitely be very vulnerable against possible "non-conventional" foes that might align themselves to their Muslim brothers in Pakistan. Let's just pray that this do not devolve in a real conflict, at least during our lifetime. It's going to be a freaking world war.

US is my hometown, Philippines is my country. Whether China respect the UNCLOS or not I'm glad PFRM stand firm that he is not giving an inch of Philippine sovereignty. American history and Philippines has been together fighting Spanish regime, Japanese war, and now China. They stand firm with their treaty. Thank you America for your support!🇺🇸🇵🇭🇦🇺
