Thanks Tim. Glad you enjoyed it. Garrett let us know a few months ago that the original owner who gave him the car, passed away but before she did, they were able to watch and share the video together and she loved it. This is one of the best stories out of all our features. Thanks for the nice comment.

My old man had a motley assortment of cars his whole life--whatever struck his fancy at the used car dealer (he never bought new). In the early 1970s, we had a 1962 Greenbrier (green/white 3-speed) and a 1965 4-door hardtop (maroon/black w/Powerglide). I remember sitting on the hood/frunk lid, listening to the radio, when we heard that Jim Croce had been killed.

We were just talking with a future feature owner about how much cars can bring back memories and have such a pull on the heart strings because of those memories. Your comment is exactly that - a really cool memory involving the family car. Thanks for the comment and hope you are a subscriber and part of our ITCCT family!

I know of another old man who gave his car away instead of selling it he told me that if he gave it away instead of selling it was like having a daughter that you would never even sell but you give her away hopefully to a good home to a husband to care for her. Stewardship for an old car is the same.

I just was given a free Corvair too. A friend knew I have wanted one for decades, and dropped off a '65 Monza Coupe in Gold. I fell in love with Corvairs 33 years ago when I sat in one on a used car lot. It was gold too. Amazingly my "new" car turned out to be EXACTLY the same car! Going to be restored now for sure!!!

Gary F Hawthorne Sir you are a very lucky man, I bought a new 1966 corvair 500 with the 110 hp engine and 4 speed when I was in the Navy. I really liked the car and would not have sold it if it had air cond. I did not even know you could get air in a corvair at that time

"Back in the day. . ." as so many people say, I, too, was a "Corvair Nut." Learned to drive in a '63 Monza 4-spd coupe; bought a '61 Monza 4-spd with a dented rear fender for $50 off a fellow on my paper route; my dad (R.I.P.) had a white '63 Monza 4-spd convertible; I traded my '61 for a '65 Corsa 180 Turbo 4-spd convertible just before I graduated from High School; found a beautiful '66 Monza 140/4-spd coupe for my sister when she got her driver's license (which, incidentally, had the same rare white/black interior as the Monza featured in this video); ended up buying a '66 Corsa 140/4-spd convertible with factory A/C after a lady ran a stop sign and I T-boned her with the '65 Corsa, totaling the car (I had two bruises from my seat belt!); bought a '64 Corvan 110/4-spd with a VW-like camper kit off a starving college student when the clutch went out and he couldn't afford to fix it; bought a '67 Monza automatic with factory A/C with a blown engine from my insurance broker - rebuilt the engine and gave it to my mom (R.I.P) - she drove that car for just over 25 years and it never failed her - we never even had to charge the A/C system! They're all gone now, for various reasons, but I still have about $5K worth of NOS parts in my storage locker! Of all the Corvairs I've owned, I miss the '66 Corsa convertible w/ factory A/C the most. But the van was a lot of fun, too!

Fantastic story and car. Actually the perfect combination of options and color, for me. Unsure about the factory air performance. We just finished installing Clark's A/C in my friend's Corsa convertible and it works great. In Florida air is a must in the summer , probably like AZ. Thanks for sharing.

I don’t have the AC operational yet. All the parts are there. I have been focusing on drivability for now - clutch cable, pushrod tube seals, carburetor rebuilds, etc. AC is on my list - as is fixing the radio or swapping to a modern one that looks vintage. I have ridden in one other Corvair with factory AC. It was cooler but not what we are used to with air conditioning systems in modern cars. Is your friend running R134 in his Corsa? R12 is still available from some dealers in Arizona.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk the package would be aftermarket, like Honolulu blue paint and silver and maybe some Detroit Lions emblem embroidered seat covers, other than that, I don't know! There is no actual package, just imagination, with it being a 69 that I want is because I was born in 69, and a life long a Detroit Lions fan being from Detroit originally!

You should be ashamed of yourself for taking advantage of an elderly lady! I bet her relative are so upset you did this. She could probably have used the income from selling it. I'm 74 and do not want to be taken advantage of like that.
@IfThisCarCouldTalk
@IfThisCarCouldTalk 2 жыл бұрын
You should watch and actually listen to the audio. We met the lady and she didn't have any relatives who were interested in the car. She and Garrett had become good friends after he helped her on many occasions to get that sweet Corvair running and she REALLY wanted him to have it and preserve it. Garrett is one of THE nicest men we've ever met and he would never take advantage of anyone, much less an elderly lady! Your comment is way out of line and we also hope you are never taken advantage of in any way! We believe this story is one of the best ever! We would never post a feature if we believed there were any improprieties in the story.

Actually Ellen asked her 28 year old grandson if it was okay. He serves in the military and was going to get her 1958 MGA convertible. She had told him of the time spent working on the car. He was in favor of her giving me the Corvair. I offered the car back to Ellen for free after I replaced the pushrod tube seals, tires, and clutch cable. She said “Oh no, it’s all yours!” I’ve helped so many people in my life for no charge. How many people have you helped fix their cars for free or given them parts that cost you money? Keep caring about people and helping them. Expect nothing in return. You reap what you sow, later than you sow, more abundantly than you sow.
