Did fencing for over a year in NZ - everyone uses pigtail and they're quite more handy. Once you get the hang you can fence like a king!

Tom, I appreciate short videos as much as the long ones. Both are quite informing. In the U.S. a farmer would stock that pond with some bluegills, some small catfish or bullheads, and maybe a few carp, and have it for a nice, private fishing spot. You do have to like fish enough to catch and then clean them, however.

We’ve always used the plastic fence post because they have multiple heights to put the fence at. They are also a bit lighter. The only problem we’ve had with them is some of the fence loops snapping off but that only tends to happen on the older ones. The other benefit to using the plastic ones is that they are completely insulated and also don’t leave your hands covered in rust!

Hi Tom hope this finds you well. With your pond problem, I take it the pipe you have put the fence around is taking water out to the ditch? If so to help stop it glog up with mud etc ... could you put a 90' bend on the end of it then put a lengh of pipe on that to the height you want the pond to get to. This will take water from to top as it floads and not mud from the bottom . Hope this helps! 😎

I like the little everyday farm life videos mixed in with the bigger ones. They give a fuller picture of farm life and the fact that it's not always big jobs and that the little things are as big a part of farm life as the milking, planting and harvesting.

Tom that pit won’t be fixed if there is a drain always open like that- as it fills silt will always end up blocking the outlet! Put a length of perforated plastic in with extra holes drilled in it cover in clean large drain stone and the water will always get away plus cows wont knock soil into your outlet!!

I use both plastic posts and pigtails. Pros of the plastic is they are more visible and have more options for height or ability to have multiple strands of wire. Howerer because they are thicker you can't carry as many in your hand, which makes the overall job much longer. They also bend and have bits break off them very easily. Also because they flex alot I find my cows are likely to knock them over easily. Pros to using pigtails are they are thin, so you can carry absolublty loads in your hand. They are much sturdier and more useful for other jobs like propping gates open. I think the colour of wire does not matter too much because its likely they will only miss see it from a distance. If the fence unit is kicking out enough power, they should learn not to risk being too close to it or lean on it (which for some reason my cows love doing) Hope this helps.

I was asked by a certain agency if we had thought of fencing off a stream through our fields to stop sheep going in as the nitrates had tested higher than usual. As they were informing me a brown object floated by followed by a bunch of toilet roll, the sheep weren't amused when I told them not keep buying the expensive stuff or I'd make them use the tracing paper they made us use at primary school they just ignored me. On another note it was found that someone had been fed up having to empty their cesspool twice a month as the developers has installed a tiny thing had bashed a hole in the side. They now have a digester and the nitrate levels were a lot lower and the last time we were commended how clear the waters were

I use pig tails as they last a lot longer and are good for drier soils as you can tramp on them better (not that you have that problem at the moment). Slightly different design to yours but if you can get ones that don't have a plastic coating on the pigtail, then you get less wear from the wire under pressure during wind and on undulating ground. Gallagher in Australia/New Zealand make some good ones that I like. Also the fence reels that are geared (like in the above brand) are much easier to use. Also look into getting a fence tester, you can run a main wire from the dairy down the centre fence and strip wherever you want and use the tester to find any shorts. Makes life a lot easier (more accurate than a piece of grass). I move four mobs on our farm everyday in about 40 mins. You'll get a lot more out of your grass.
@trevorcowan5270

Plastic are better don't get lost in the grass you don't get a shock of them also put in a mains unit and some permanent wires all around farm put an insulated hook on the end of your new twine and hook on fence reel also hooks on fence

pig tailes are awesome for big stock like cows, year 2 heifers and beef etc. plastics are better for young stock as you can set the wires lower.you have to angle pig tail posts to be able to get the wire low enough for young stock.

Hi from sunny county kildare in Ireland. Just tuned in, in the last while. Great videos and have great info on them. Have helped me out already, 👍. I prefer the pig tails as they have more strength in them. The sun affects the white posts after a year or two and causes them to break. Keep up the good job.
