I find it verry relaxing to watch the drone when its in the sky filming the land you work on with those machines. I realy appreciate your efford to show the world what farm life is realy about and how life on a farm realy is. I am jealous on you for all your skills and knowledge and you get to cuddle calfs all the time. Keep showing the world your farm life, and take some credit for yourself because you and dad deserve it!

Thank you Tom for showing how this spiked roller works. The grazing fields seem to tare up while your cropping fields were okay. It will be interesting to see if it has helped your fields or not! Keep the videos coming they are really good to see how you farm with your dad.
@nicktuke27484 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, your spike roller is lifting sods in your older pastures because you have a layer of compaction stopping the grass rooting deep, either from where the ground has laid wet or from poaching. It would benefit from a grassland subsoiler but timing is crucial for it to be effective. Cheers
@fatty4094 жыл бұрын
It was worth a shot. This is a good opportunity for both of you to see what works better. The kit did seem to work really well on those fields you said that werent pasture land but the pasture land did seem to rip the sod something fierce. Again as you said you won't know until the grass comes up

An interesting piece of kit, looks like it's doing a reasonable job. Our pasture land does not have very deep roots, that may be your problem 👍

Think your issue is a combination of compaction and root depth the land you work will be more compacted and roots will dig deeper for nutrients plus is looked after better than the pasture land. Just My take on it anyway.
@44birdie444 жыл бұрын
Might have been mentioned in the video / comments but would be interesting to see if half of each field got the spike roller treatment and the other half just got rolled. With flat, similar ground like Tom has it’d be interesting to see come silage time if there is a difference in quantity of grass harvested. Not a farmer but have a keen interest in agriculture and growing food

We work with the erigator on our farm you will defo see a massive difference with grass growth. Couple of points tho, full the roller, faster travel is more effective as the spikes are designed to crack the ground down as far as a foot. We use it after every cut of grass before slurry goes on. Much much better grass quality and quantity. Hope this helps with it bud. Great videos keep up the good work
@jonnymckinty28754 жыл бұрын
Also I should add we do about 150 acres of our own and contract to local farms and anyone in a 10mile range of our farm gets us in to do this after each cut of grass. You should invest or atleast think about it bud
@kevinjensen74653 жыл бұрын
Tom, the sods pulling up, is due to lack of roots penetrating down into the depths. You need to rip your paddock, with a coulter in front of the ripper, to cut the turf. Ripping will allow the water and the grass roots to penetrate deeper.

Faster you go the more and deeper shatter effect you get in the soil. Works better if ground drier and fill it with water. Weight means you still roll and drier means soil shatters better. It's a delicate balance.
@martinprosser85214 жыл бұрын
For the sod to rip the tensile strength of the sod is greater than the bond to the earth below. This could be the length direction of the root for the type of grass or you need a subsoiler as there is a pan.

why do u guys roll the grass? rolling compacts and that makes the first leayer of dirt to compact for air to get in and air only gets in where the spikes go... Isnt the best way only to spike it so it gets air and the roots can go deeper and pick up more fertelizer and grow thicker?
@Fisha6954 жыл бұрын
I would think it's because the rolling helps even out the ground getting rid of ridges from the wet field work that way when they mow & chop its safer on the equipment.

@sebw19644 жыл бұрын
I would think that if it says to go at a certain speed, there is a reason behind the suggestion. Also, maybe it does need water in it for weight. In fact you probably answered your own question by saying that you were going to slow and that was why the sod was being lifted. Who knows? I just love watching you....and all the chores you do in the run of a day..
@mikerom99584 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom, glad to see you replace your divots, your dad will be pleased! Fore!
@mjb121419634 жыл бұрын
The way I heard it from a grass expert of some sort. When healthy grass clumps pull up like that it is because it has shallow roots. This is caused by the high amount of water on the fields from the rain. In the dryer areas of the fields the roots grow into the ground looking for water making it making those less likely to be pulled up.
@flyingpigpreserve85624 жыл бұрын
You might have to raise the Slit/Roller more on that field. If worked well on other field at that height but might try raising some if grass is thicker. Just a suggestion 😉
@davidw23884 жыл бұрын
Tom, check those areas for insects damage in the root system. Sometimes you can get insects that eat the roots off and allow the pasture to pull up like you have in that one paddock.

Put the arator on the front of the case and the roller on the back 👌😂
@keithlenihan83394 жыл бұрын
For that aerator you need to wait until the ground is rock hard and have it full of water and go as fast as you can the point of it is to shock the ground and create a gap to let the oxygen down through the pan on top
@oisincoyne68474 жыл бұрын
I agree, the ground should be that wee bit firmer, would be interesting to see the results if this was done after first cut silage and just before slurry application. Too many people knocking this machine, soil aeration is vital for any crop but especially for farmers who don’t crop rotate, I”ll be surprised if this roller isn’t a success.
@jeffjefferson33644 жыл бұрын
Actually that machine is best used during a very dry spell, saw one like it at grass and muck years ago, it's really heavy to break into the hard soil and you go fast to cause vibration from the roller so it doesn't just slot the ground but busts a crack in it beneath the surface.
