If you aren't living within your means then you are broke! Too many of us are spending money we don't even have, and running up large amounts of debt, just so we can buy things we don't even need.
But living outside our means doesn't bring us happiness, it just ensures that we will spend our entire lives in debt. If you truly want to live free you have to live within your means!

Definitely get judged when it comes to dating in LA. Women think I’m broke and have no drive because i don’t chase after the newest car and own all these things. Unfortunate but I’m pretty much debt free and happy!

The stress is what causes inflammation on the body and compromised the immune system. The people who lived beyond their needs are stress maniacs. I don't wear expensive jewelry or purses unless is a special occasion, they are gifts because I will never pay even if I can afforded. It's better to keep it plain simple specially when so many people are going through so much hardship or get kill over a purse.

Man. listen. I drive a 2002 Toyota that is in great shape and still has under $100,000 miles on it. I take very good care of it and keep up the maintenance work. When I buy another car, I will be able to pay cash for it, more than likely.

I’m trying to simplify. I’ve cut cosmetics drastically, I color my hair myself at home and get my hair cut at a cosmetology school by students, I’ve stopped buying new clothing. I can’t justify almost $200 every two months for getting my hair done, when I think about making $11 an hour pre-tax is equivalent 30 hours of work at one of my jobs. Now I have students cut it for under $20, thankfully I realize if it’s not perfect it will grow back. I also look at all the environmental damage that my wasteful spending was contributing to, and it makes me sad. Once you step out of the cycle it hits you how draining overspending becomes emotionally. You realize that it’s the emptiness and boredom in life that drives you to over consume.

I'm going to be out of debt this month. Have three past due collections to clean up beyond that, but I'll be out of active debt THIS MONTH. After 15 years of being in debt! It all started with the student loans, then credit cards to make ends meet during college, then just spiraling for years trying to go into debt to try to impress people that didn't even actually care that I existed. Now I'm so close to being out of debt I can taste it. I hate debt.

I was never a minimalist and recently a few months ago had to temporarily vacate my apartment for a few months along with everyone on the 12th floor so they could do major roof repairs. We got boxes to pack up all our shit and let me tell you I never realized how much shit I actually owned. It was ridiculous and it took me weeks to pack all this shit even though I tried to get rid of many things I still had a lot of shit and I told myself you ain't bringing nothing in this damn apartment again unless you absolutely positively needed and it has to perform at least two functions. After the repairs were done and I move back I even tried to get rid of a few more things that I know I wasn't going to use. Now partly in my defense I was in this apartment for over 10 years but still it was annoying as hell looking at all this shit I acquired but wasn't doing anything with. One good thing about the pandemic was I didn't buy clothes for 2 years and this will be at the third year that I'm not buying clothes again.

Contentment is what most people needs. My coworkers looked surprise when I told them I'm driving 22 years old car and live in tiny house. Can I afford to buy Tesla , BMW , Lexus , or Benz or bigger house ? yes of course but I'm happy with what I have. Most of them are in debt up their eye balls when I talked to them. I have 3 cars that all paid for so there are no payments. My house is paid off , so all I do just pay gas , power , tax etc. I paid my son college tuition in cash so he doesn't get into debt. The rest of money I put in saving for down payment on my rental property , or invest in my Roth 401k , Roth IRA ,and stocks.

Totally..i hear you on all this! And on the "walking while being judged" thing ohh yeahh so much. I chose to walk back and forth to work everday for 6 miles round trip though i had a car, because i would have to be at a desk for 7 hrs (would walk at lunch too!) And also because traffic was always nonstop sitting for most of the "drive" anyways. It was crazy. But i got so much hostility and stares. Did this for 2+ years. They would be comfortable only if everyone was sitting in a car on idle like them. Got almost run into on a regular basis, yelled at, and more than once i was actually barked at - by humans. Yeah. Screw people who are so small. Keep on keeping on YOUR WAY!

So true. I went from being an RN 95k yearly (in my early 20s) to a mf FELON (long story, suicide attempt on the job cost me a lot). I work as a server now and only part time bc I don't feel like breaking my ass. (I was also just in school......Plus I ran from the cops so I broke my back really badly-LOL). Anyway, now I make about 25k part time. Nobody could even tell....I was living at "mommys and daddys house" as a nurse. Now on 1/4 less- I am on my own, on only 25k in new york. I just need my friends and a meal or two daily. NYC trains save my ass from needing a car. I am not even going to mention how much I have saved bc it's in the dirt somewhere and I am not trying to have a target on my back..... ***ALSO IN TERMS OF SOBRIETY: I just now became a certified peer specialist! (2 years almost in recovery) Tim is this what you mean by being content bc of knowing you have life goals you are working towards?!

Timothy, Searched living within your means on KZbin and this is the first thing I clicked on. Really like your attitude. I'm always looking for ways to be smart with my money. My motto is, "If I don't have the money right now, I'm not buying it." On a good week, I can save half my paycheck. I drive a reliable 2001 Jeep Cherokee. Looking to move out soon, as I still live at home. However, this has allowed me to save up several thousand. I'm satisfied with a simple life, and glad to know there are others that are too.

When you move out and get your own place be sure to have several power strips. This makes it easier to shut off appliances that you're not going to use when you sleep from drawing electricity. I've seen a definite decrease in my electric bill doing this simple thing and all it costs is a few bucks for a couple of power strips.

You're not weird, you're smart. A car is the single biggest driver of debt slavery, I see so many people at the point of poverty just to keep a car on the road. Without it they'd actually be doing pretty well, even without a high paying job. I keep my driving license up to date in case I ever want to rent one but no way i'd ever own a car again. It's financial albatross around my neck I can live without.

Good talk Tim. I was fortunate enough to never fall in to the trappings you describe, meaning I never really wanted all that much, which allowed me to have pretty much all I ever wanted fairly early in life. Getting to that point made me realize the whole idea that having a pile of stuff will make you happy is a lie! It's one of the emptiest ones anyone will experience. I'm not sure many will realize that until they experience it for themselves. I wish everyone had the means to get to that place, so they can see it firsthand. I think it would be a very different world if that happened.

Excellent video! I just bought a “new to me” car and when I told my co worker about it she automatically assumed I bought something bigger and better than I had before and more outlandish than what she has (because I make more). In a very comical way she expressed that I was going to “upstage” her and she would now have to go and buy a new car also. She was so surprised when I showed her my little used 2013 fiat 😂, and also got her confidence back when she realized that I did not “out do” her. Needles to say, we are complete opposites but somehow we’re friends.

Does living within ur means mean not having children? 😢 I never thought I would understand when someone said they can’t afford kids. But it’s possible if u live within ur means. One day I will hopefully get out of debt.

Never had debt and never had loans. Unfortunately I will have... when I'm going to buy a house... but thank God I never had student loans or car loans (higher education is so cheap here you can afford it by working weekend jobs, so I am lucky). However, even though education and healthcare are affordable in my country, an awful lot of people live above their means... 😑 I agree with your point. Why for God's sake is it soo easy to live outside your means...?! ..... You explained it clear and simple. It's just simple logic and realistic thinking... yet most people don't want to see. And teaching financial wisdom an literacy will never be at the forfront in education because that doesn't serve the rich and powerful....

Great video with a lot of really good points ! I’m working very hard now to stay within my budget the last 5 yrs, although it’s difficult at times, not to just spend money ( that I know I haven’t got and then regret spending it !) I also used to find that once I’d bought /impulse bought an item, when I got it I wasn’t that bothered about having it ! Much happier now I only buy what I can budget for or save for Peace of mind !

@Timothy Ward you preach some really damn good principles, too bad man-made reality makes some of them impractical. let me explain - someon'e being content with the amount of money he makes is not enough with the never ending YOY inflation of about 3-4%, and once a decade 10-15% inflations like we are experiencing now. only if this someone was already making 3-4 times higher than the average earner, then getting hit with 10-15% inflation on his money every 8-9 years won't hurt as much, now imagine you are making minimum wage or just average... being content is no longer possible, thank you corrupt criminal bankers!

What's up, Brother? I think people live beyond their means because the powers that be tells them it's OK, to keep them trapped in the matrix of debt which keeps you enslaved. You're right! Only buy what you can afford, and stop wanting to be seen having something better than your friends and just live! Peace!

Living within your means does not keep you from good things, there are ways to attain through shopping around and saving for special events, The reward is then appreciating these experiences and things more than if you incur debt,

This is the difference between someone who can seize financial opportunitys when they present themselves and someone who can't. My monthly expenses are 850 dollars a month including rent, utilties, phone bill and grocery bill. This gives me 1200 dollars a month to do whatever the hell i want with. As a kid who grew up poor having 300 dollars a week to just do whatever with is unheard of. If i was smarter I'd be investing a huge portion of it lol.

Interesting video. I do deserve nice things so I am going tp have what I desire. If you can't afford things, you have to make more money. Everybody has a talent. Maybe you can cook, get into catering for an example.

The thing is, money doesn’t belong to you. Life does, but money belongs to the federal government. Spending matters to them, so they need you to spend spend spend. You would have nothing today if people didn’t spend. But you have life, you can always meet new people for free, and live off of opportunities that way. You are not what you bank says you are. Even rich people are living unfulfilled lives because their identity is all about how money is spent and returned. But then there are church communities living scarce are living fulfilled lives by doing community event together.

22 and have 20k in savings and don't know what to do with it. All I know that I want for my life is to be filthy stinking rich. People say money can't buy happiness. Well, I disagree. I believe the only people that say that are people who just don't have enough money. For me, money isn't about the status or things I can buy, it's about the freedom and possibilities it brings. The only reason we aren't truly free is because of money. The reason we aren't happy is because we aren't free. And as for happiness, I know I could do more rich than I ever can living at a mediocre income.
