A few years ago you would have needed to spend thousands to get a powerful Mac for college, video editing, or high productivity applications. However, since Apple Silicon replaced Intel Macs, the tables have turned. No longer do you need to spend thousands to get pro level performance; but this has some side effects. Intel Macs vs Apple Silicon have depreciated massively, and if you bought in at the end of the Intel days, your Mac is probably worth WAY less than you paid... today we'll examine what happened!

Me too…the only halfway nice thing is that I wore it out and Apple replaced it with a new one under AppleCare. So… should I upgrade to a new MB Air? My computer is literally only 3 months old because of Apple giving me a brand new replacement. To tell you the truth I use my large iPad Pro 3 times mor than that laptop. I have an ancient PC on my desktop with 3 monitors, one is a good 30”, the others are 27”. If I could buy an iMac 27” (or 30” or 32”) with an M2 or M3 processor I would grab it. Oh well, my buddy just bought a Mac Studio M1 two weeks before the M2 version came out. His M1 Studio is maxed out, and he bought the Studio Monitor as well, it was over $5000. I desperately needed an upgrade from my 2013 MBP, and while Apple Silicon Macs are incredible, I still need to run x86 Windows occasionally, so getting a 16” Intel MBP was the best option for me. I had a 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro up until 2 weeks ago and liked it for the most part being that it had a great display and was thin. But the machine was very loud and hot under load. The location of the vents meant that my legs would block the vents at the back, which meant I had to use it on a desk. I recently upgraded to a 2023 MacBook Pro 16 inch with 512GB ssd and 16 GB of ram!! It’s a huge improvement. All day battery life, super fast, fans never go on full blast, and having the ports back is amazing! It is a little thicker than the old one but for the better cooling it’s well worth it

I paid just over $3000 for a 16 inch MacBook Pro in April 2020. Fortunately, I sold it in March 2021 for $1800. That felt like a huge mark down and loss even at that time. It was what I needed at the time, but super frustrating as it would shut down from overheating if I had too many things open at once. Got $1000 M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM from Apple's refurbished store, and it has yet to crash under a heavy workload. I'm going to stick with it until it dies. It was in like-new condition and I paid half the price of the base model 14" M1, haven't had any issues with the keyboard or performance since I don't use it for heavy tasks, and very happy with how thin and light it is. I mostly wanted the bigger screen. I’m a software developer and bought the 2016 MBP fully loaded when it came out. I’m typing this comment on it right now. I have a love / hate relationship with it. I bought it because it was touted that the cooling issues where resolved with this MBP. That is just not true. The think throttles and the fans blast UNLESS you are in a room that is 65 - 70 degrees. That being said, I also literally run 4 old thunderbolt displays off of it and a ton of peripherals (audio interface, 2 stream decks mouse, keyboards, hard drives) and it pushes all of that as long as I’m in a cool room. I got my money’s worth out of this machine with the amount I made on it. But I still regret getting it. I wish I just waited one year later. That being said, I’m going to get a fully loaded M2 Mac Studio to replace it and not look back. I’ll use this as my “in the bed” or “on the couch” or “in the kitchen” machine. It will no longer be my daily driver, and just a casual mobile machine for light work.

Writing this from a 2019 16" 2.3GHz i9/32GB/8GB/1TB I bought new. Zero regrets. Not having to deal with the transition has absolutely been worth it. I do hardware/software development and integration for a startup. This has given me the flexibility to do most of the things I've needed as my primary machine without having to deal with any kind of dependency compatibility issues etc. Also don't see any reason to upgrade at this point at all. I mostly run in clamshell mode mounted on the wall, heatsink + vrm "modded" and an aggressive fan profile (loud environment regardless). This is still way more stable and convenient to use than my 7900x machine. I don't think AS has egpu support still and haven't heard any mentions of it being a future offering. Feels weird not itching to upgrade, but I don't need to fully rebuild my development environment. I appreciate all those who are finding the quirks, fixing bugs, and making the platform more usable in the meantime though!

The issue with apple silicon not holding it's value is less about the "processor" and more the "system on a chip" problem. ram isn't upgradeable, and storage isn't upgradeable. while the RAM doesn't wear out, the storage definitely does and it doesn't make sense to buy non-upgradeable storage of unknown lifespan.
@lechuck2011
@lechuck2011 9 ай бұрын
It is truth that storage wear out with time. But to be honest, I've never seen a device that had to be changed because the storage was broken due to lifespan. I have laptops with more than 7 years with the same SSD(and not high end quality SSD). So, even tough you buy a 2 or 3 years old laptop the biggest chances are you are going to replace it because lack of power, software obsolescence and not because the internal storage is wore out

I had the fully-loaded 560x MacBook Pro that I picked up when the 16” came out for half its original price. Never got on with the Butterfly keyboard so it mostly ended up docked with an eGPU and external keyboard & trackpad. In many ways the 2015 MBP is superior even with its slow graphics and Haswell-era CPU. I switched to an M1 Air in 2021 and the baseline performance is phenomenal given the lower power consumption but I missed my eGPU and Bootcamp and running x86 VMs so I now have an i9 16” with the 8GB 5500M and 64GB of RAM. I picked that up on eBay last year for a fraction of its list price and it’s been my daily driver ever since. That 1” extra screen space is amazing. At some point I’d like to upgrade to a fully loaded 5600M but it’s rare to see any model in the UK with that and the import duty from the US isn’t currently worth it. I’m also thinking of selling the M1 Air as I’ve a couple of homebuild 2017 Macbook 12” machines that take up that bit less space in my bag. Their Butterfly keyboards are quite pleasant to type on (maybe the only real use case for them was in such a slim machine) and recent macOS updates allow the screen to be run at higher than 900p resolution. Mostly I use them for coding on the go and Keynote, both of which they handle admirably. The days of the Intel Macs are clearly numbered in terms of macOS support but they’re still great bits of kit and unlike Apple Silicon there are plenty of alternative operating systems for them. The MacBook 12 running Windows or Linux is far more elegant than any of the PC alternatives and the prices on eBay are ludicrously low for their build quality, performance, and the general ease with which parts can be swapped out. Now if only Apple would launch a modern Macbook 12 with a single USB4 port and a down-clocked M1 or M2 processor.

I do love the M1 Air for certain tasks and situations, but I find myself using the Intel 16” much more. Being able to run Windows via Bootcamp is just a special thing. It’s like having two computers in one. It’s plenty powerful for my needs and has a big beautiful screen and awesome speakers. To be honest Touch ID and Apple Watch unlock work faster (and more reliably) on my Intel Mac. I know it will never be worth a whole lot resale wise, but I already bought it secondhand for dirt cheap. I will use it for a couple more years at the very least. Great computer.

Great video. Luke I think you are “misremembering” the transition slightly. The Intel MacBook was a MUST when plenty of people predicted the Apple silicon chip would be a failure! How many tech experts were skeptical about Apple basically putting an “IPAD” chip in their laptops? ARM, seriously? Apple was a laughing stock and MANY buyers refused to buy the M1 and HAPPILY choose the Intel model. Hindsight is 20/20 but fear of a weak processor on top of the belief that optimizing would take years had many buyers passing on M1 initially.

Yes Luke I bought one of those 2019 i7 MacBook pro's in 2020 partly on your recommendation as it fixed the butterfly keyboard problem. I still have it and it's fine, but I didn't want to sell and' take a bath'. My MacBook had £200 off the Apple price so I think the dealers had been forwarned. When did you guess Apple silicon was coming out? I've since bought a M2 Pro Mac mini which is much faster as my desk top machine. I think I previously bought the white 2006 MacBook with the core duo just before the core2 duo came out. So I should be used to buying laptop just before a whole new generation comes out!

I got my 16 inch back when I worked at apple for a pretty good discount and it still performs well, the fans are loud under workload and the battery is pretty trash when editing, but still love this thing. This to me is the perfect MacBook, the compromises of the M1 chip software restrictions and the terrible QC on the prior MacBooks places this as the one that come out of the battle victorious.

I'm a marketer so i will mainly use it for office work and light video and image editing, costed me around $600 US 2 weeks ago. was it a good buy? also note that i bought it in Dominican Republic, so prices here are 18% to 25% higher than what you see in the US because of import taxes. The price you mentioned at 4:27 is the same price Apple is willing to give you at trade in for a late 2021 MacBook Pro with maxed out specs ($6500 at initial purchase I believe). 2019 was 3 years ago. If you've used the machine as a business tool and made your money with it or gotten your use out of it, I think that $1500 isn't the worst for the 2019 MacBook Pro, especially a machine on the old hardware with Intel. Computers have depreciated worse than cars for a while now so I try to keep things in the perspective of, what is the machine for? If it has served it's purpose for me, a quarter of what I've paid for it initially probably makes sense 3 or 4 years later. It certainly doesn't feel good, but I get it. That being said, I also understand the frustration of someone buying a machine that becomes completely outclassed with a level up machine just a short while later. The release of the M1 Pro laptop had me scrambling fast to figure out a game plan to upgrade after getting the 2019 Intel edition.

Yes there are situations where a 16inch Macbook Pro makes sense. In our company we have to use Windows for developing our software and also industrial PLC software. We used Macbooks with Parallels running virtual Windows. That was better than running native on a PC and the virtualization gave many advantages. Even today with a 2022 PC running Windows in VMWare the 16inch Macbook is better and much much more stable. Unfortunately you can’r run a x86 Windows in Parallels on a M Macbook, the software like VPN clients we need for supporting our customers doesn’t run on an Arm based Windows. That’s why we unfortunately have to switch to PC and VMWare.

If you buy any computer, be it laptop or desktop, Intel or ARM, and use it to earn hundreds of times its purchase price, then it is well worth its price, whatever that price is. If you buy a computer to sit around idle or just play games rather than earn money then you are not getting your money's worth, no matter what the purchase price was... I'm still incredibly satisfied with my 16 inch 5600m macbook, but thats only because I pushed it beyond the limits that apple probably intended it to. I do miss out on faster encoding times which is sad since I mainly use my device for animation and video editing, but i did make this laptop a gaming beast. I did the VRM mod which allows the device the thermal headroom it needs to game under bootcamp, and then on top of that, it has egpu support so I can go even crazier with vr and more demanding games, as well as take advantage of better Metal rendering in apps like Blender. Apple Silicon is great because you can easily get performance, but if you know what you are doing, the 16 inch 2019 macbook can flex HARD in the areas where apple silicon flounders.

The nice thing about these last gen of Intel Macs is that they are the last and best machines for dual booting Windows, as well as Intel Emulation. Also, while they’re nowhere near as fast for data intensive work, like video editing, they’re still highly usable for everything day-to-day, and will be for the next 5 years, at least. Unless you’re trying to get certain workloads done as fast as possible, or have maximum possible laptop battery life, there’s really no need to upgrade these until they no longer get security updates from Apple.

I agree the dual boot is pretty cool and it could see more life left as a windows machine. When I owned the 2019 model I got windows 11 to run on it. Although the Mac OS support is quite scary being that this machine likley has 2 years left and that’s it because of apples pace of dropping intel macs
@rickkarrer8370

@@thatretailguru Yeah, I think there's 2 kinds of people that will use these going forward: those who want a large screen and don't know or care about OS support (like my parents), and those who will tinker and get newer OSes running years after they're no longer supported. In the case of macOS, there will be a hard cut-like when Apple Drops Intel support, but at the rate they've been moving with hardware lately, I think we have 2-3 more years of Intel support, then 2 years after for security updates. So, 4-5 years of OS support. Then about 5 more years after that of 3rd party browser support.

But for what I use my laptop for (word, chrome, lightroom, etc.) it's a perfectly fine device with great build quality. I have a desktop PC for my 3D and intensive work so the laptop doesn't need to be insane anymore. I'd say it's important to remember that if it's working for YOU now then it's an amazing device. When M3 comes around I'll consider upgrading, but honestly I have no issues with it thus far so I'm not pressed. I thought I had a bottleneck, but I was just using my software wrong. Once I realized 1080p didn't have to be 80mbps bitrate, It feels like a brand new computer. It's so snappy. And I don't have that stupid notch. You can have your notchbook pro! My export times are like 10 minutes. If you're not standing up to walk around 10 minutes every 3 hours you're going to shorten your life expectancy anyway. ... Admittedly, I might feel like it's worth an upgrade if I was editing 4K, or using more AI now that that's mainstream for video editing (DaVinci magic mask and such)... But right now I don't even have a problem to solve. If I upgrade it I wouldn't actually notice the difference other than cutting my beloved 10 minute walks down to 5 minutes. This laptop is still awesome.

I did buy the latest Intel 13“ as a replacement, still have that and I probably will be using it until it’s slow enough… each new macOS version seems make it slower. A sweet M2 would be nice too, but i use an eGPU, and the M2 aren’t as great in the graphics department. (M1 was already out when i bought the 13“ intel, but i needed Windows Bootcamp.)

I do love the fact that I can boot x86 Windows on my 16" MBP. Some crucial timing-sensitive software I want to run that doesn't play well with virtualisation and translation layers. Very few drawbacks with this macbook compared to the 2016-2019 15". I could argue (aside from single-core which also can be crucial) it does hold its own against the M2 and can be equipped with more RAM, but that means very little when MacOS software support is going away in the coming years. I get the steep decline in value.
Is the 15 inch MacBook Air the PERFECT MACBOOK??
