@Soloist1983

@@jamsstaylor2348 what are you talking about? Octane directly effects the likelihood of detonation, in engines that are susceptible. My car is a 2003 Infiniti I35, with 105k miles, the engine design allowed for lots of blow by and oil burning, as such the octane rating is reduced further once a little oil mixes in with the gas, additionally, the PCV system can contribute to this as well. The result is that my car pings with 87 but does NOT ping on 91...it's simple physics

Scotty, As usual you are spot on. My 2007 Milan six-cylinder doesn't require High or mid octane fuel. Occasionally I'll put a quality fuel additive into the tank for the sake of the injectors and the valves. Regular changes of the oil, its filter and the engine air filter plus checking the tires are about the extent of my routine maintenance. I've spent far too much money and aggravation screwing up my cars without consulting a competent mechanic. Blessings upon you and yours.

I've gotta say, I'm from the u.k and the car I drive uses the 3.0 dohc 24 valve engine. It's very well maintained, regular oil changes etc but I have to say, when I use cheap unleaded fuel, my car pinks. The next time I use premium fuel, all is good. It also performs better on premium too. Cheap unleaded makes it sluggish
@bobwilliamson2613

FYI pay attention to the OCTANE rating some states sell regular unleaded @ 85 instead of 87. I lose 6 mpg with 85 regular than when I use 87 so I have to buy the "MID-GRADE" just to get the 87 octane my vehicle manual says to run. In my state, the octane ratings for regular/mid-grade/premium are 85/87/91. Whereas the majority of the states are 87/89/91-93 octane and regular fuel @85 octane sells for comparatively the same price as regular fuel @87. 85 octane is for carburetor run vehicles in higher altitudes but as Scotty says modern cars adjust air/fuel via computer making the reasons for selling 85 octane regular gasoline obsolete. I believe since the 1990's computer-controlled air/fuel ratios have been standard equipment.

If it's got a turbo and the factory says "Premium Recommended" it will run on 87 Regular but senses it and retards the timing (lowering mileage to the point you pay the same per mile as premium). Then one day the knock sensor quits, and if it's running 87 Regular at the time, you get to buy new pistons and/or valves... Learned the hard way in a 2.2 turbo Dodge Shadow.

I have used 89 octane in an E36 BMW that I have owned for 15 years with the logic that 89 is closer to the recommended 91 octane. The car now has 324,000 miles, no knock and ping, never any drivability issues and runs like a bat out of hell on the highway while idling steady when in the driveway. So for personal reference that mid grade gasoline has served me very well...with the caveat of going to quality "top-tier" companies like BP, Chevron and others.
@videomaniac108

I think there might be a place for the mid-grade octane gas for older cars that have significant amounts of carbon buildup on the piston tops and combustion chamber head surfaces. With the reduction in combustion chamber volume due to the deposit buildup, there might be an increase in cylinder pressures that would require a higher octane fuel in order not to detonate under load.

We've been using 87 octane (no particular major brand name and as often as not NO major brand name) in the 2014 RAM 1500 Hemi 4X4 since the day The Lovely Bride and I purchased it new in November of 2013.....The same can be said for the 250,000+ mile, five cylinder, 2005 Chevy Colorado Z71 4X4, that we purchased in late October of this year, as a "huntin', fishin', and knock around beater". The RAM gets, on average, 25mpg on the open highway while the high mileage Colorado gets around 18 to 20mpg on that same stretch of road and at the same speeds (55 to 75 mph depending on where on I-95 we're talking about and the time of day). Around town we get, on average, 14 to 18mpg from the RAM and about the same from the Colorado. We've tried 89, 92, and 93 octane fuel in BOTH trucks and all we got out of the deal was higher at the pump costs.
