His pain in this song never fails to take me to its place in my own heart. Funny how we are all so alike in some ways. The violins, come in like sad birds in flight. I loved this song in the 70s and I love it now. Music transcends time.

It's amazing to me as I find all these amazing older songs, they just happen to be from Gordon Lightfoot! I'm 53, so a bit before my prime time of music, but holy cow, finding these gems makes me so happy.

When I was a youngster I would come home walk through the door listening to this play as I walked up the stairs, mom would be doing stuff around the house, it’s about the time I was watching their marriage fall apart, didn’t really pay attention to the song at the time . I got married at a very young age, 2 months out of high school knowing that it was going to fail, she had three affairs in a four year marriage and after I received the divorce papers I stopped at my parents and this song was on, I listened and then listened to it many more times. A few years later I got remarried and then I was the problem, causing a lot of issues the first 5 years into it, heard this song on the radio and knew I needed to change, a pattern was happening, we are 30 years pushing on and I still play this song and get emotional.....

“In a castle dark, or a fortress strong, with chains upon my feet” Beautiful metaphor of a strong man that’s in the dark, chained by all the love that he once had for a woman. Love is incredible and gives life so much purpose and direction. But, when it leaves as fast as it comes, it’s binding and eats at your soul. It changes who you are and who you will be, unless you unchain yourself and be free. Love cuts deeper than any razor and truly infects your soul. Love can either make your life worth living, or make that same life miserable. --my advice would be to avoid it at all costs. It always ends terribly and the price you pay is too expensive for what it is.

chad...advice! how many generations have parents & wise people given the 'young' advice about love & relationships when they saw the pain & heartaches it would bring... they knew because they had been there and are trying to save us the same pain. when we are young, we don't want their advice! we think we know it all. i remember being a teen and my older sisters giving me advice about boys. i would just look at them & think...why would i take advice from someone who's relationships last for 2 weeks and have to get a restraining order on him...i had 7 older sisters so i saw a lot. i learned that i had figure it out on my own and learn from my own mistakes.

One of the videos says 'the feelings that you left' it's actually 'feelings that you lack' which makes a tremendous difference! His daughter got him to change it to 'the feelings that WE lack' so as not to put the full blame on the mother. God knows how he managed to put all this down on paper then perform it a million times in public as it was such a personal song. It really is poetry set to music.
