i used to play lonely rider a lot... i was so thrilled that you actually could play as a cowboy riding a horse on the c64 ever since i played gunsmoke in the arcade :)

I don't remember playing Phantasie much, but I watched my brother play it. At the time, I didn't like the feeling of random encounters out of the blue - I liked how Ultima gave me the feeling of being able to avoid encounters ... or really, at least see them coming, I guess. An interesting TI-99/4A RPG inspired by Phantasie is Legends. It seems there weren't a whole lot of RPGs on the TI, so I find it interesting that one of the few it had was inspired by Phantasie rather than, say, Ultima.

I’ll have to load up Legends and try it out on my TI-99/4A. As for random encounters it did give you the option to run away if they were sleeping.

Definitely loved Hypa-Ball as well back in the day. The only RPG I really got into on the C64 was The Bard's Tale for some reason, and really didn't fall in love with the genre until the 16-bit era and Phantasy Star II on the Genesis. By the by, how'd those Cowboys do, Tom?? 😏

HypaBall was awesome. Playing against someone it was even better. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who appreciated that one. Bards Tale is a classic. Good one to play. Hmm no comment on the Cowboys. Just frustrated and not looking good with Dak out now.

Yeah, it is a bummer when your starting QB gets injured in the first game of the season. That happened to the Eagles in 1991 when Randall Cunningham went down in the first game against the Packers and was ultimately lost for the season. I remember being so deflated when that happened...

Hypa Ball was absolutely terrific and still holds up. It was a German release so I don’t think too many people in the states even knew about it back in the day (my father travelled to Europe for business so got me a copy)

I even have the Commodore 64 games on the tapes and disks. Never played that game. I only played games as a way to let some steam off...so shoot'em ups , platforms and rapid sessions of video gaming was my plate. This game appeared to demand time. so I never gave it a go. I am interested to learn what it was all about.

Not played Phantasie, but it looks interesting for the time. Avenger I played a lot of on the C64, yes you really need that map. I found it frustrating, kept dying at the same point (the grill above Honoric's head). Hypaball I didn't play back then - it was written by Odin in the UK, you appear to have a hacked German version there. The music is good and I love the cover of it by Press Play On Tape (the Swedish band who play C64 music live on rock instruments). The reviews of Hypaball said it was nicely polished but repetitive. Fist II was an interesting sequel, but in trying to make that open world it loses the focus of the original's fights. (The updated Tournament edition of Fist including with Fist II is good). Tournament Tennis was originally released as Match Point in the UK by Psion. I like how you have to switch backhand/forehand, but movement of the player is tricky. Not familiar with Lonely Rider or Hades, both look fairly simple and dated.

Hey Andrew! Thanks for the detailed comments. Good stuff!! Hypaball does have good music. I saw the KZbin video of Press Play on Tape. It is repetitive but great for two player. It’s like an advanced version of Pong.

Phantasie was good fun. although Ultima III spoiled me for RPGs. LOL. Interesting games on those disks. I remember the ninja one but not the others too well.
