I loved this video and all 7 suggestions. We have a small group of 4 guys who run together almost every afternoon right after work. We are me the oldest at 66, the others are 65, 60, and 53. We call ourselves Los Caballos Viejos- the old horses. One thing we do after almost every run is have a beer or non alcoholic beverage together for a short period of time. Lots of fun. And we mix it up with different kinds of runs and mostly on a trail in a forest. Hoping to continue for at least 20 more years. Thanks for all your delightful videos. Merry Christmas from Greensboro, North Carolina.

Have you tried running on softer surfaces, eg trails. Have you tried cushioned shoes - eg asics novablast 3, or many other good bouncy shoes on the market at the moment. Have you tried stability shoes if you overpronate - eg New Balance Vongo. Have you tried Joint Supplements such as fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin or even collagen for your tendon and bone health. Have you tried gradually increasing your mileage rather than ramping it up quickly? Also foam rolling, stretching, warm up and cool down, massage, good nutrition and enough sleep every night. Everyone should be able to run if you do all the small things right.

I recently saw a clip with Andrew Huberman about motivation and dopamine. According to a study the dopamine given by an activity Is lower when you focus on the reward instead of the activity itself. You can re wire your brain to reward you for doing hard things, like running, lifting weights or studying. For me the keys to enjoying running and why I run in the first place is to practice enjoying hard things and discomfort instead of avoiding it.

Congrats on the crown! Great video! I have race buddies, but no training buddies. I'm determined to work on my speed this year, which is what holds me back from trying to run with others. I absolutely love the trails, and get zero enjoyment from the roads now. When I feel my motivation flagging- which happens a lot with such a hectic schedule and poor sleep- I go out on a nearby 5k loop up and over a little mountain. It's fun, technical, and lovely. I wear the watch but ignore it, and just run how it feels best. I think it's time to do that again, winter and work has sucked the motivation right out of me!

I have lived in my small town 62 year’s. We are lucky to be surrounded by countryside and the local hill range. Due to various commitments my ‘training’ runs are mostly on the pavement. I have a couple of standard loops but other than that I make a different route every time. My ‘fun’ runs are up in the hills. I tell myself the pavement runs will make the hill runs more fun and it works for me :-)
@TK-ok6hk

For me, I often choose different routes for my runs so i dont end up in stereotype. Choosing trails over asphalt is always preferred - this also keeps it interesting. I also consider using headphones "cheating", hehe, because being with yourself during those tough session where you just dont wanna do it is really what makes you more resilient. I now can say that I am at the situation, where I can enjoy running. My body is kinda shaped for it now. When I started to run, I have always pushed too hard, didnt rest enough, ran through knee pains, shin splints etc. which is never good. I was begging for pain to go away so I can run more - person really need to alter the mindset about this. Consistency, slower paces and paying attention to technique to avoid injuries - thats the key. Good luck to everyone who is trying to keep themselves in shape and disciplined.

Thanks for the tips. It is always good to hear other people's perspectivs and ideas. For me, just as you say, running on roads in a dreary environment is just too discouraging. Luckily I live very close to woods and mountains, so I run there exclusively. This is really enough- every workout is fun, has good scenery, and my run is always varied- hard uphills, easy downhills, a few flats to stretch out and run fast- it is like a fartlek workout automatically. I personally find that music and other people just ruins the whole experience of running- the connection between human body and environment, breathing, muscles working, heart pounding, all that surrounds me- those things make it worthwhile, not anything that distracts from that. I might just try this strava thing, though. Could be interesting for motivation. Many thanks!

I listen to audiobooks while making easy runs. I found I can run for hours while listening to an interesting book. Music is fun especially when you can sync your strides with the music (I choose music at the right bpm for it). But in the end music makes me focus on the run even more, not less, and it is a bit draining after some time. Audiobooks let me focus on something completely different and the running part happens on an "autopilot".
