I sure do miss those days. I tell my grandchildren the stories of my childhood so often. The expressions on their faces is priceless when I talk about things that are pretty much obsolete now. Like calling to get the latest weather updates or if you were really bored, calling to get the correct time. My 36 yr old daughter grew up in the 90's with her brothers and always tells her kids how they played outside all the time. My husband and I couldn't afford a computer until 1998. So no internet but they did have video game consoles. They just didn't play nonstop like kids now or even their parents do. No kid had it better than us 70's kids, though. I'm sure kids that grew up in other decades say the same thing.

I remember that day. For me it was mid 1985. We frequently played games like hide and go seek and “phantom” (a reverse versions of sardines). That night we instead got an offer to play D&D from the new kid on the block, and that was the end of those games. Then again we were just finishing up 8th grade; I guess we wanted to be more “serious” and hence move on from childhood. Alas, that D&D phase for me ended less than two years later - and after that point life got a lot more formal. Not just for me, but also the generation of kids behind mine.

In the summer, I would get up and say goodbye to my mom and hop on my bike and ride over to my best friend's house. We would goof around all day. We would often then ride our bikes to the park or maybe to the Dairy Queen and get some ice cream. Of course we slid around on the slip n slide or fought with the water wiggle. life was so much fun then but also sometimes was boring if you couldn't think of anything to do for a little while. We built tree houses and sat up in the trees and talked about girls. Later my friend and I both got small motorcycles and had a lot of fun on those too. My parents basically only had one rule... come home when it starts to get dark or at least call. I think the best thing about life then, especially in the summertime was freedom.

We rode our bikes for what seemed like forever. We played outside, climbed a million trees, built forts, skinned our knees, walked for miles, swam until our arms were gonna fall off, we were chewed alive by mosquitoes and we were never afraid of the dark or fearful of being injured. Great times. I just wish that I could remember more.

Walked along railroad tracts, shot bottle rockets at each other, knew how to cross the street, played in the rain, played in the sun, explored abandoned places, … cuts got “stingy medicine” from mom (aka tincture of iodine).. or tetanus shot from e/r when more serious ..casts for broken bones often got signed …

I grew up in the 1970s. Life was a lot simpler then, maybe not easier, but a lot simpler. A time before social media, smart phones, etc. We hopped on our simple bicycles (no helmets), went exploring, fishing, pickup ball games, etc. Summer seemed to last forever, the days were long, and the possibilities were endless. You knew it was over when the back to school advertisements started to run at K-mart, Sears, etc. Seeing the school bus lumber down the road toward our house on that first day back to school put an end to it all.

I'm 66 now. When I was seventeen, between my junior and senior year, me and a friend went to Panama City Beach, Florida during Spring Break and rented a room. Back then, they would let two seventeen year olds rent a room. I met a girl down there, sixteen, who was with her family at the same motel and we hung out all week and talked for a year after that, but I never actually saw her again. But when we were younger, we just roamed the neighborhood. I had a Schwinn Stingray.

Born in '56, so 14 in 1970. All so true. Bikes, go carts, forts, war with the kids across the brook (like they were a rival tribe!), cannonballs off the high dive at the community pool, etc. I would be out from 10:00am (there were always chores to do before), till 6:00 for dinner. Then out to the field to play capture the flag until 9:00. I chipped teeth a dozen times, broke my nose twice, stitches on my head three times and on my arms and fingers four times, a compound fracture on the ring finger of my left hand (I tried to catch a cheap, Voit football that was like a frozen brick of ice). Good clean fun. So many Boomer kids everywhere, all the time, day and night. It was a fabulous time to grow up. I don't envy the kids today. I feel sorry for them. Even my own grand kids.
