@@TheHumblePenny Ken, as a 60 plus year old Irishman I thank you for your wonderful advice and openness to a world that is a mystery to me. So much of what you said in your video made so much sense and I really believe that society and businesses treat us all like human batteries, to be discarded at the end of our useful life. The future is indeed portfolio work and so many jobs will simply disappear, or be automated. My respect to Mary and yourself

The sensible steps are: 1. Get out of credit card debt like right now. 2. Straighten out your life plan, so you don’t build up credit card debts in future-there are some steps to consider here too, including cutting your cravings… 3. Invest in your skills so you can get a better paying job to gather some real savings. 4. Get that better paying job, and consciously decide to save -a lot. 5. Now you have no debt but you have some fair grand to hand. Break up that saving-I mean don’t invest everything in one place at the same time. Do some reaserarch and start investing just a small part of your money but keep building that savings account. 6. When you start to invest, start with government-based investments like bonds and gilts. The govt is not highly likely to go bust overnight, so you have some level of confidence. 7. Keep learning how to invest very gradually. As you get wiser, start to extend your investment reach.

The best thing I ever did for my finances, and I was fairly good at budgeting anyway, was to set up sinking funds. I use Kroo as I can have as many pots as I like, all of which get interest. I have pots for car, holidays, vets bills, medical, DIY house maintenance, insurance and many more. This is separate from my emergency fund. Sinking funds are meant to be spent, usually on annual or irregular expenses, I save a little each month into each.

Humble penny Thank you so much because you kinda open my eyes. I have credit card debts of 8000dollars and a student loan of 5000 dollars. Another thing that is weighty on me now is that we live in a two-bedroom apartment with three kids. My wife wants us to buy a house because the kids are growing up and need more space to play around. Well, I have some money saved up however, I'm the only one working now, my wife is a stay-at-home mom by default. I want to know if should pay off all my debts first before thinking of a house? This is stressing me out. I need your honest advice. Thank you in the anticipation of understanding .
@TheHumblePenny12 күн бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for sharing. 3 things: 1) if you have savings, keep a bit for emergency and immediately pay off your credit card debt, 2) your student loans of 5k isn't that much. If you can and want to, pay it off. 3) Only buy a house if you can afford to. This is critical. Where you buy and how much you borrow matters a lot too. Finally, encourage your wife to work or work from home. There are lots of remote jobs or business ideas. This will boost household income and remove a lot of the pressure from you.
