If Fatty Liver is THE precursor to cirrhosis, why wouldn't you do ultrasounds & check liver enzymes on those patients who have all the factors that indicate the condition is likely present? Must we wait for the most severe irreversible diagnosis before treating a condition that is not only treatable but reversible? My hepatitis DR who treated me for Hep C informed me recently that she doesn't treat other chronic "liver disease". But would do a colonoscopy (with no evident signs of my needing one) if I wanted one... but no follow up with blood work or scans to see if my liver is in better condition or not. Healthcare in Europe sounds a helluva lot better that what we get in the US!

Why wait until people are in bad shape and the liver disease has progressed? Thinking it would be better to treat in the early stages so less medical intervention is needed.

Currently at this point myself, "you have fatty liver disease" so with the pain I have I've asked what they are going to do.. she said exercise/diet... I said with this pain I cant even sleep on my bed. I mainly sit and rest my head so I can't imagine getting up and doing anything straining and I have NO appetite. So I said why am I not being referred out?! You would think atleast to a hematologist or whatever and that doctor didn't even ask for a follow up so when I sent pictures of my distended abdomen that they barely felt with my belly button pushed inside out she just dropped me and said I could see a doctor there with "fresh eyes"... But none of this started until immediately after I gave birth and I was hemoragging, had a hospital infection for months unknown after a csection, I haven't drank in 10 years and I'm only 29. I truly feel like I'm dying I have bone pain, paralysis when I wake up from pain especially when laying down so I wonder why they aren't taking me seriously especially after my CT scan that had a ton of incidental findings that they won't speak about, but atleast it's apparent I have a non acute bone fracture in the pelvis or rib or spine I can't remember because it was covered up, they won't explain anything so I did what she eventually said and made a "follow up" with a new doctor in the clinic and have waited a month, it's this week. During this last week I was talking to my mom on the phone and I had some type of stroke or something I was crying because my hand went numb and I tried doing everything I could go regain sensation but now it's been 4 days of half of my writing hand numb. I should've gone to the ER but the last time I went (I couldn't speak correctly for two weeks and they didn't find any lesions on my brain) but I had tachycardia and they just let me go and said to follow up with my primary doctor. So I'm worried what they're going to say at this upcoming appointment. From her diagnosis, she said I should have no pain and they don't know why so a psych in the same clinic I had been seeing told me it was all in my head... Sure trauma from a csection that happened almost 2 years ago when I couldn't stand up caused a lot of anxiety and depression but looking at me now I still have a lot of odd physical issues... Like a hard round distended abdomen and a growing lump at my middle ribcage should ever be normal?! What my mind is creating these issues? No. Medical gaslighting has caused more anxiety and trauma than anything. The system is so fucked up, I can't trust anyone anymore. So I'm going to go to this last appointment and get out of the same network they're all connected to because I feel like I was actually misdiagnosed long ago and they don't want to implicate their fellow colleagues. They get in your mind like a parasite, care more about protecting themselves than saving patients from irreversible harm. We need a healthcare system reboot. Sure the mind and body are connected and in some cases we can have issues related to trauma but mine has a root cause of actual medical negligence. I haven't stopped swelling up since I was pregnant the last week. Delayed hemoragging, delayed diagnosis of hospital germs in my body, and now I'm weak I can't even go grocery shopping. I'm disabled in ways anyone under 35 atleast shouldn't be and that's another reason, they want to keep people from getting disability help. Our family needs so much help because my fiance can't work while picking up my slack with our children. They act like we want to be disabled, no I had a future planned and was so excited, I'd love to get better but my issues aren't being addressed or diagnosed and incidental findings usually end up becoming a problem EVENTUALLY or do have alot to do with what's happening in the moment but yet they keep that stuff hidden from us. A fractured bone should be addressed no matter how small or large. I feel so lost, because I'll either walk into this appointment with "it is what it is, we're sorry we can't explain whats potentially happening, just focus on your diet" or "yes we have found that you do have liver cancer or a cancer that has spread to your liver" It could go so many ways because they have been so tight lipped. Maybe my liver is at the point of terminal, and that's why they've waited to say anything but it's also odd I got a flyer about donating my body to others with my name on the back with a prescription. Sure it could've just been wrong timing but it also says this could be clinically relevant to myself. Maybe it is all in my head, but genetics say I could have breast cancer or leukemia like my grandma died from. I guess we have to just really advocate for ourselves when it feels like we're being annoying but it's our health on the line.

Every time I have blood work done I’m asked if I drink beer, even in the early 2000’s when I was in the army in the best shape of my life as a cardio machine I was always asked if I was a heavy drinker. I’ve NEVER drank a sip of any alcoholic beverage or have done any type of drugs. Would this qualify as non alcoholic fatty liver?

@@fernandocabanillas8133 that’s not easy to guess without knowing anything about you. It could be caused by an insulin resistance. Could be caused by a metabolic syndrome. Could be caused by too much fructose you consume. You should get your liver levels tested and have at least an ultrasound scan done for fatty liver. If it comes back positive then it is a none alcoholic fatty liver. I wouldn’t bother so much trying to find out exactly how you got it because the way to get rid of it is always the same. Weight reduction by lifestyle changes. You should really look into intermittent fasting, it isn’t as bad as it sounds and in all honesty not very hard to do. Reduce your sugar intake as far as possible and keep carbohydrates low. Of course, exercise helps, but it’s just an option. You should see great results starting to show and feel within as soon as 4 to 8 weeks and have reversed most of a possible insulin resistance and your fatty liver within 3 to 6 months. We just weren’t made for eating every other minute.

More than 1/3rd of the US population has fatty liver disease. There was a study done i believe it was in 2016, that found that at least 80% of the US population had at that point been diagnosed with NAFLD. Now those numbers don't include all of the people that have NAFLD but haven't been diagnosed.

You can have fibrosis/cirrhosis without being having diabetes. I'm on anticonvulsants and have been for 17 years. When I was first put on anticonvulsants they impacted my liver bad enough to switch me to a different set of pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately all 3 of the pharmaceuticals I'm on are linked to fatty liver. I know I have fatty liver because of jaundice, pain in right side of abdomen, and excess bilirubin in my urine (been going on for at least 1 year). Yet every time I seek help from a medical practitioner for my liver concerns they say "your liver is fine" without ordering any tests other than a hepatic blood test that shows I have fatty liver.

You want to take fat off the liver? You have to lose the fat. Around the 5 minute marker when Dr. Brandman talks about the expense of screening people who are healthy and have the potential to reverse the disease, she back pedals and talks about treating sicker people...this kind of sums up health care for me...statistics (dealing with the shifting markers of "normal") and treating disease rather than helping healthy people get healthier and pursue a better trajectory for their health. Very disappointing. I was in the store behind a couple with a very chunky toddler. They opened a box of cereal...or what passes for a food-like substance...that little guy at 3 or 4 has all the markers for addiction and the store (Costco) should be called out for selling that crap...or no, the company that makes those little cluster-fucks of sugar.

Hereditary fructose intolerance Hereditary fructose intolerance is a serious type of fructose intolerance. However, it is treatable and manageable. It occurs when a person is unable to digest neither fructose nor fructose precursors, such as brown sugar. Those with hereditary fructose intolerance lack sufficient activity of an enzyme called fructose-1-phosphate aldolase, which helps digest fructose. The fructose then accumulates in the liver and kidneys, causing serious and potentially fatal complications, such as liver and kidney failure.
