It refers to the fact when cars had MANUAL locks, so you had to unlock a door with a key, so you'd open it for your date, and then when you walked around, you had to use your key to unlock the door. So back then, it was courteous to reach over and flip the lock up, so the person could get in. It's hilarious that we are so far removed from the time of Bronx Tale that you can't fathom why you'd reach over and unlock the door for someone, because you don't understand that time.

The idea of a guy I'm seeing showing up at my workplace unannounced creeps me out. I mean, grand gestures made in public stress me because I feel pressured by them. Also, did you know the engagement ring and the white wedding dress were invented specifically for Queen Victoria. Until her wedding those two things didn't exist. I literally hate the idea of an engagement ring! In the old days after the promise of marriage was made both partners of the new couple wore what we know as wedding rings. The practical reason was that people can easily be tempted and that ring on their finger reminded them of the promise made.
