I am a mechanic also and Scotty is an absolute Master at 2 things - 1) Explaining things and 2) Convincing people that he totally understands something even if he doesn't. Here is the thing: from reading these comments, I see that what Scotty should be saying is that OVER idling is a bad thing and in my opinion general idling is totally fine. This whole conversation started with him explaining why an engine with low mileage is all sludged up and the actual reason for sludge comes from when people repeatedly jump in a vehicle and don't even let it warm up and then hardly drive it and shut if off again. That is really bad to do to an engine, because it never warms the engine up to PROPER OPERATING TEMPERATURE to heat the oil up to the temperature that it is formulated to work correctly at . It messes with the chemical properties of the engine oil and the oil turns to sludge. Hence the sludge actually comes from NOT ENOUGH WARM UP TIME BEFORE OPERATING THE ENGINE. THUS idling is very very important when you start a cold engine. If you want to take care of your vehicle and it's engine then LET IT IDLE to warm up the engine and the engine oil before you operate the vehicle.

Companies who have fleet vehicles that idle a lot (e.g. to power the 2-way radio to maintain *necessary* *communications* ), often are also driven ~6000 miles per month and they *at least* get the engine oil and oil filter changed (in addition to all other required maintenance, brakes, tires, etc.) every 6000 mile, WHICH ENDS UP BEING ONCE A MONTH. 😉 ps. My buddies step daughter used to let her car idle for hours in fact one day I went to visit my friend and her car was sitting out front idling. When I went inside I asked how long she'd been there she replied oh about an hour or so. I told her that it's not a diesel engine, and long hours of idle is no good the electric fans are going to have a hard time keeping the engine cool not to mention the fuel she's expending for nothing, and It could cause harm to her engine. My friend which has a mechanical background told her to go and turn it off and that I was correct that allowing the engine to idle is no good. About two months later she was in a grocery store shopping. Over their PA system there was an announcement that there was a car on fire in the parking lot. It was her car, it was a total lose a 5000 dollar car up in smoke because she let the car idle.

I was taught as a journeyman mechanic, to turn the key to run, and let the computer fully load. Then start, and let idle until up to kick down, before driving. If cold enough, idle to operating temp. But, it gets below -40° here, in the winter. But, idling for 6+ hours seems excessive, unless stranded in snow. But, we keep blankets in all our vehicals too.

If you have problems starting you car in winter, then that is a problem with starting the car, not solved by idling it. Stop wasting fuel and contributing more pollution into the atmosphere and get your battery and starter looked at if you have real problems starting a vehicle, idling won't solve anything.

3:06 Here in Lithuania we use Liqui Moly oils all the time. All thair products (at least ones we get) are made in Germany and are excellent quality. Other big brands like Castrol are high quality as well, but they ususaly come from factories in Poland. It is mostly the same oil (I guess), but many people here prefer stuff made in Germany. Since my mechanic friend recommended it, I have used Liqui Moly oil in my car as long as I own on (6 years by now) and never had any problems with it.

North Alaska trucks are like this as people go shopping and leave them running in the parking lot. They run all day and are only stopped at night. I had a F250 with 43,000 miles with a little over 3,000 hours. I used synthetic oil and changed it at 3,000 or three months. I ran it till I had 165,000 miles back in Texas. I have to idle my 02 Mazda B2300 aka Ford Ranger because the automatic transmission won't work if it's cold. It's been that way since it was a baby. I give it only 2 oil changes a year (in June and December) since I got it 18 years ago. I use Castrol for high mileage vehicles, even though it only has 263,000. It's a synthetic 'blend'. I think it's half regular oil and half synthetic.? or something like that. It's not the cheapest, and certainly not the most expensive. I use the Castro transmission fluid too.👍Good Stuff.

That's why l change my diesel engine oil every 3000 mls because we do a lot of.short journeys diesels take longer to warm up than the gasoline engine . Low engine temps causes corrosion in the cylinders that's including gasoline engines.long journeys with normal driving is the best for diesel vechicles, keeps the systems clean, bus engines suffer on buses that do a lot if town mileage, l worked for a bus company 30 yrs ago, the buses which were on long journeys kept the engines on top power and the oils kept a lot cleaner. Good video well explained.

Just change the oil by the hour, not by the mileage. Just for the record, I am a commercial fisherman, we idle 95% of the day, and I removed an engine with 15K hours on it that ran fine with no oil consumption. My neighbor sold his boat with a John Deere diesel with 30K hours. He replaced 1 injector pump and a water pump in all those hours. Other guy down the road from me pulled a 3208 cat from his boat with 26K hours.

My medium duty trucks (2.5 tons) have hand throttles so if you are sitting and idling, warming up the engine, you can set the throttle up for 1800 rpm, about double idle speed. This warms up the engine faster, keeps coolant flowing better and keeps the oil temperature hotter which burns off the moisture inside the engine.
