I think the best memoir to read in relation to I'm Glad My Mom Died is What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo. Highly recommend. Foo writes about her own healing as a journalist, researching and interviewing experts, interviewing the adults from her past who didn't intervene, and even including transcript excerpts from her own therapy sessions (audiobook has actual recordings). She also explores intergenerational trauma in immigrant communities and its relationship to child abuse. Incredible book.

Jennette McCurdy's memoir is GREAT for first-time readers. I'm so glad you mentioned that. she basically writes the book as a series of vignettes so the "chapters" are quite short and her writing style is easy to digest while still making each vignette introspective and insightful. hope this is the first of many writing projects for her! I'd love to see a fiction novel from her too. also, KNOW MY NAME is seriously one of my all-time favourite books *ever*. Chanel Miller can WRITE write.

I also found the scenes with her mom dying of cancer in the hospital to be sort of triggering since I recently went through that with my mom dying of lung fibrosis (although her mother's behavior was way more reminiscent of my grandmother, esp concerning stories my mom told me). As for memoir recs, two of my favorites are I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom and Fun Home by Alison by Alison Bechdel. Bloom's memoir similarly deals with mental health issues, particularly OCD and shame spirals, and also made me feel seen as a former Weird Kid. Fun Home also deals with the subject trying to make sense of their fraught relationship with a parental figure after their death, and the musical adaptation is a gorgeous work of art.

It's called "What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding" by Kristin Newman and I found this book on IG bc I wanted something to deal with traveling, finding oneself in a foreign country, growing up (20s/30s) and love. The book is around Kristin who is a comedy writer (she wrote for "That 70s Show" and "How I Met My Mother") and how her travelling to different places give her a sense of fulfillment but also a time to just fuck around when you are young and not trying to start a family/be more responsible. Fun fact, the movie title "Promising young woman" (Which I highly recommend!!!) is inspired by that famous "He's a promising young man" statement from Turner's father

It’s true. I don’t like to read since I feel it takes up too much of my time outside of my other hobbies and work but I was oddly compelled to pick up this book/audiobook (chose the latter since I’d rather listen while doing something else). I finished it in 2 days. I couldn’t put it away. It was therapy for me…

I’d never read Chanel Miller’s letter and when you mentioned it I went to do it immediately and it’s broken me but it’s so beautiful to see she’s better and is delivering this powerful message. you better believe I’ll read know my name

yessss her book is even better written than her victim impact statement letter tbh (which is already really good)

Another rec I have if you liked "I'm Glad My Mom Died" is "The Apology" by Eve Ensler. It's written in the form of a letter from her late father, apologizing for the abuse that he inflicted on her. Of course, he never actually apologized before he died. The book is also very intense, but SO GOOD.

greats recommendations! I've loved every book I've read out of these and will check the others out soon. I think you might also enjoy 'why be happy when you could be normal' by jeanette winterson. it has similar themes to I'm glad my mom died and educated, such as a dysfunctional mother-daughter relationship, feeling cut off from the world because of the way your family chose to live, educating yourself when no one else did etc. the writer also talks about her queerness, her love for literature and mental health. it's one of my favorite books ever and I highly recommend it!

While I wait to get my hands on the book/audiobook from the library, I'm living for these reccs, and Know My Name is great. Truly hoping Jennette absolutely gets only the best of life and whatever she pursues next after everything she went through

“Know My Name” is definitely my favorite memoir too. I think everyone should read it. It’s such an important piece of literature. It was incredibly painful to read. I was crying the whole way through and the entire thing was such a powerful experience.

yessss it should be required reading!!

This is a great video. I wasn't planning on reading the Jennette McCurdy book but I think I might pick it up after watching your video. I've been unconsciously reading a lot of memoirs this year. I've read Educated, Know My Name and In the Dream House and I thought all three were fantastic.
