UPDATE: I have a new resin jar video using a different mold here: • If You Need a Hexagona...
Recently in one of the many Facebook resin groups I inhabit, I saw someone post about making jars from resin, and screw-on lids to go with those jars. I was seriously intrigued! So I hopped over to Amazon and ordered up what seemed like a possible mold, and here it is for us to try out! I will freely admit that the alcohol ink gods laughed and laughed till they were kind of green in the face.
Check out some of the items I've made, listed in my Etsy store:

I love Swirls! Mostly swirls of color, but really any swirls at all - I think they add a beauty and grace to everything. So after I started making soap a few years ago, and needing some sort of biz name that didn't sound like everyone else's version of suds-r-us, I decided on Luxinda Swirl. Luxinda is a twist on my real name, and I quickly started putting swirls of color in all of my handmade soaps.
Now I'm branching out a bit, and I want to keep adding swirls to everything I do!

I'm new to your channel and new to resin. I didn't know what side to pour the resin for the lids.
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree that the jar molds can be confusing about which side is up for the resin to get poured into. My only tip would be that on both parts of the jar mold - the jar and the lid - remember that the screw threads will always be closest to the table you’re working on. That should prevent you from accidentally pouring into the wrong side or part of the mold. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and commenting!

I'm wondering how much heat resistant the resin needs to be if you used it as a candle jar 🤔
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! I don’t know about candle flame heat, but KS Resin is rated heat resistant up to 450 degrees, so it’s perfect for coasters that might have hot drinks set on them. People do make resin tea light candle holders. But I’m not sure about pouring a candle straight into the jar - that might get too hot when burned.

This is beautiful! Do you know if you are able to store food items in it?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don’t think it would be advisable. Some resins claim to be “FDA compliant” meaning incidental contact with food isn’t a problem. But my understanding is that once any colorant - like micas, alcohol inks, paint, etc. - is added to the resin, then it should not touch food.

I am so brand new to resin. I have all I need, but I'm afraid to mess up. How far to the top of the mold do you pour to avoid overflow??
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t stress too much - playing around with it is the best way to learn and enjoy the process. I tend to pour till the resin gets close to the top, then slow down and keep adding just a little bit more, then a little bit more, etc, until the resin domes just a little bit above the top edge but not actually over the edge, stop. The resin will shrink a little while it sets up and hardens. But over-pour can always sanded, and putting in too little the first time can be fixed by pouring in a bit more resin later after the first pour hardened. You’ll soon get the hang of it.

Hi there! Are you able to use this jar for candle making purposes?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! That is a great question. I would guess probably not, only because a burning candle, when the wax melts and the whole thing gets pretty hot, is most likely going to heat up the resin too much. The resin I use most (KS Liquid Stone) is rated up to 500-degrees F, but that’s more of a coaster with a hot cup set on it situation vs the prolonged heat of a burning candle. Long-winded way of saying I don’t think it would be safe. Thank you for the question!!

once the jars are done are these able to have food in them or not
@Luxinda
@Luxinda Жыл бұрын
Probably not, although I think it's personal preference. You could absolutely put, say, wrapped candies in it. But definitely not liquid, because resin doesn't do well with long exposure to being wet. And I'd guess most people probably wouldn't want dry food (like pasta, for example) sitting in a resin jar. On the other hand, some folks have resin counter tops in their kitchen and prep food on there all the time. The best suggestion is to contact the company that makes the specific resin you use and ask them about food contact with their cured resin.

@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
I used 8 oz of resin for both parts of the jar - main base and lid -- so in your case, I would probably mix up 9 oz which is an easy 6 oz of one part to 3 oz of the other part, but that obviously leaves you with extra. Or you could change from oz to milliliters and mix up 160 ml to 80 ml to get 240 which is a hair over 8 oz and you won't have too much waste that way.

Would storing body butter/scrub or bath tea/salt in resin jars be fine?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer. That would be something the resin manufacturers could tell you. I’ll reach out to the owner of KS Resin and see what she says, then report back here. It may take awhile to get an answer. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, here is the reply from KSResin: "Thank you for contacting us! When accurately measured, thoroughly mixed, and cured in the recommended environment, our products are FDA compliant for food safety. However, some chemicals could (although unlikely) react with the cured epoxy resin so unfortunately I cannot provide a definitive yes or no in this case." So I guess the best idea -- if you're really interested in finding out -- would be to get something made from resin (a coaster would be easy), put the bath/body product onto it and let it sit for a week or more, then see if the resin looks or feels any different when you wipe the product off of it.

I tried this mold but unfortunately when I screwed it together it got stuck together. Do you have any tips on how I can get it unscrewed?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 3 жыл бұрын
I can understand that -- I remember wondering if I should leave the lid sitting separately while both pieces finished curing or leave it screwed on, and it occurred to me that if I left the lid on the jar, they might meld together. The only thing I can think for you to try is your heat gun -- if you can aim it up underneath the lid all the way around and then keep trying to unscrew it (more heat, try again, etc), that *might* work. Good luck!!!

@@Gifted1tn , hmm, that’s too bad. With this specific mold, I get a lid that works but is a little tight. With the hexagonal jar mold I use in a different video, the lid is much looser and almost turns too far, but it doesn’t pull off. I wonder if the issue is your particular mold. I guess the only way to know is pour again and see if the same thing happens.
