I had an experience like this with a co worker. He asked about borrowing my tractor with the backhoe for a small 2 to 3 hour job and my trailer, and I agreed and everything workout out great. Then a month later he asked again for the tractor and trailer and backhoe for an all day possibly 2 day job. I had issues with that, one, Will you replace the fuel you use, two , if you break something will you pay for repairs, or if I find any damage when you bring it back counting damage to the trailer will you repair those. Then he got a little teed and said if I was going to be that way why don't I just rent them to him and told me to come up with a fee. I made it pretty high, not to mean I wouldn't do it but wanted to cover my side if he did break anything. I told him $600 and he thought I was crazy. He didn't end up renting the equipment and our relationship at work has diminished. I even came down to $400 and he said if I didn't trust him to just borrow it , he would just rent one twice the size for $600 including insurance and I wouldn't have to worry about it. So now I don't know what to say if he comes to me again to borrow something. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Your friend, Kevin

My brother in law loaned his skid steer to a friend. There was an accident with the skid steer and that friend ended up dead. So no I don’t lend my tractor to anyone. I don’t care if it hurts your feelings.

I think you handled it the very best way, safety for everyone you’re familiar with the tractor , you can check the ground before you start for obstructions / debris. He would feel bad if he broke it and someone could get hurt on his property that’s not familiar with the equipment and how to stay clear of it when it’s working. Additionally liability for you is limited and you have a chance for some good fellowship. you showed great wisdom & able to help a friend. Remember back in the day when you see bumper stickers on a pick up truck “yes This is my truck no I won’t help you move“. LOL

Hi Hank, when I got my tractor I pretty much told all my friends without tractors that I'd purchased one and if needed help with something to let me know, but it comes with an operator. As far as barrowing implements, I'm like you, I try to purchase it if I know in advance. I would never barrow or loan a hydraulic implement due to the chances of cross contamination. Merry Christmas Sir!

So just help the person snd operate the tractor yourself. Thanks. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

There is only one friend of mine that I trust to loan any equipment to or borrow equipment from. We both know each other very well, and know that we can afford to fix anything that might get broken. I have used one of his tractors a few times and he has used one of mine a few times. I know what kind of operator he is and he knows the same about me. EVERY time I used one of his tractors it was returned promptly, pressure washed and with a full tank of fuel and properly lubed. He has done the same with the equipment that he has used of mine. As expensive as these machines are, I would be very selective regarding "loaning" rather than just giving my time to do the job myself. As I said, there is only one person that I would trust to loan anything to, or borrow from. Him and I are like brothers.

Would I borrow a piece of equipment ? yes, but with the stipulation if I break it I fix it. would I borrow a tractor ? Yes...with the same stipulation.... you see I'm not a rich man by any means... in fact I am poorer than a church mouse !... but if I possibly could I would buy the piece of equipment I need instead of borrowing it... I would not lightly barrow a neighbors ANYTHING.... it's not a practice I feel comfortable with. or I might rent it from a rental company... in that light, your neighbor could rent a tractor instead of borrowing your tractor. but renting is not cheap... and if your generous and most country folk are, it's no big deal to help the neighbor yourself ! Your obviously a heck of alot more wealthy than I am... but you have the right morals ! use that wealth to help out whenever you can.... that doesn't mean let people borrow your equipment, that means help out if you can. it only cost you some diesel and time.... that is nothing compared to the labor saved by doing it by hand. There is the argument of any help you give only hurts the person your helping too. if he had to dig the garden plot by hand he would appreciate the garden plot a heck of alot more ! but that comes from people that have never been poor usually looking for ways to justify their scrooge like behavior. and I don't believe that is a valid concern in todays landscape! there is alot of poor people out there trying to better their situation... helping them out with a little tractor work will make good friends and promote friendship in your area. their may come a day when you get stuck and need pulled out ... that is a good time to call on a neighbor, because we have all been there... and the tow job's cost would be way too much.
@tractorstrailsandlivingfree5 ай бұрын
I wouldve done the same. I would volunteer to operate my tractor. If i break it or someone else breaks it, i am out some money. But the tension it would bring to a friendship wouldnt be worth it. Also, I have more peace of mind when i know where my tractor is and whats hapoening to it. If the friend wasnt okay with that, i would just encourage the friend to rent one and get the insurance. That way, they can treat it however they want.
@davekoch11849 ай бұрын
My neighbor borrowed my tractor one day...I don't recall if he asked...and he ran over a deer antler. He got it all fixed up so all's well. He borrowed my hay bale elevator maybe 15 years ago and definitely didn't ask. Hasn't returned it yet. Neither of us do hay anymore...too old. My tractor is open station and my borrowing neighbor has lots of hours of tractor time so I'd probably let him borrow it but if i had a tractor like you T574 I wouldn't, replacing glass or door is expensive. As far as borrowing, if it is a tool I need around the place and will use I would prefer to buy it too. If it is a one off I'll pay the rent from a tool rental or I might ask a nearby neighbor with the tool if they will come and do the job for me before I would borrow. Be happy to pay them too.
@towerjokeytower84849 ай бұрын
Hi Hank, I think you did a great job. Do you hunt with this person? If so is the food plot for you as much as it is for him? I think you danced around that issue gracefully. Your tractor will do the job with you in it. Your friend feels good about getting the job done. The only thing you need to do is convince your friend he needs a tractor of his own.

Went through the same thing this past summer. I went and did work for a friend who wanted to rent my skid loader, and I had a breakdown. I fixed it and completed the work. It was only a couple of hydraulic hoses, but they were in a difficult place to get at. I would've been upset if it had been the friend who had the breakdown; not knowing if was operator failure that caused the breakdown. He did pay me for my parts cost. Another thing to consider is liability. What if he gets hurt while running your equipment? If friends need help. I'll help them, but when you have a $60,000 piece of equipmen;. I don't think letting an unskilled individual operate it is a good idea.

Best to have a servants heart and offer to do it yourself. Saying no to loaning a tractor out, that could be something they aren’t used to, is safer for them. However, I might take it to them and show them how to run it and let them do their project, while I’m there to assist. If God wants it broke, it’s gonna break. There’s always lesson to be learned, but it will never be to hold tight to material possessions. God Bless

Hello Hank, In my mind there are more factors that enter into this decision. The gifts and blessings I have been granted to use on this earth are to be a blessing to myself and others and glory to the giver. If the one requesting to borrow our tractor is a well trained/accomplished operator with a similar demonstration of the limits the tractor would be used to, add in a trusted person, one of high integrity, they have a safe way to transport the tractor (ours is wider than most and won'tfit widthwise on most trailers), then by all means I would loan the tractor. The borrower needs to know how to be safe and keep the equipment safe. All that stated, the few times the situation has come up, I find offering the tractor and myself to run it. And most times it is declined. Trying to read and apply the Bible principles taught by being wise as serpants but gentle as doves.

hank,i don't think that i would lend him the tractor on the grounds that i don't think that he can use that equipment for the purpose that he has in mind. you have a tractor not a magic wand. he will also require tillage equipment. since it is my understanding that your farm specializes in raising flowers, and you really don't show that side of your operation, it it quite possible that you would have tillage equipment that is more suitable to his request. if a man went over there with a big roto-tiller it would seem that the job would work out better. in any event, i would not lend anything to any body if i had any reservation about the accomplishment of the intended objective.
