Tried keto diet and I felt ok during my normal day I guess but then we had boxing sparring at my gym one day and it was easily the shittiest I ever felt. I just didn’t have the energy to shift into the next gear when coach said to up the intensity. I was so exhausted by the 3rd round that when I rotated to my third sparring partner I could barely keep my hands up and had to keep clinching to keep from getting battered and catch my breath. You definitely need carbs for combat sports

I did keto with an intensive labor job and everyday by noon I looked like an old man trying to keep up while being in my late 20s. I think keto may have its place for leaning out for bodybuilding purposes but seems like a dumb idea for anyone needing bursts of strength and energy

How has Firas not got 1m+ subscribers? My father trained to black belt level Judo and I recall him saying very similar things to Firas. I think following a diet from somewhere like Renaissance Periodization would be more optimal. For someone weighing 200 pounds to maintain current bodyweight and muscle they recommend about .8 to 1g/lb bodyweight. You can go a little lower but too low and you will lose muscle. So... how does a 200 lb person get 160 - 200 G protein in a day off 2 meals? They could eat two, 100 g protein meals, sure. However, there's also some science that suggests there is a maximum amount of protein you should eat per meal. For a 200 lb person it's like 50G max. So that means you need at a minimum 4 meals to hit your protein goal... this doesn't even factor in carbs or fats. I think this is way off.

@robcubed9557

If you want to gain weight, you need a calorie surplus. It doesn't matter what kinds of food you eat. If you want to gain weight in a healthy way, then you'll need to make sure you eat natural foods that put you in a calorie surplus. Dairy, especially milk, can help you gain weight if you add 4-5 glasses per day to your regular diet, assuming you're able to process lactose. Peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cashews and other nuts are great for adding lots of calories assuming you don't have allergies. Starches are tricky. If you're training, then carbohydrates are good (especially complex carbs). However if you're sedentary then it's best to limit carbs. Also, if you're trying to gain muscle then make sure to lift heavy with compound barbell movements while eating a calorie surplus. Squats, bench presses, overhead presses, rows, and weighted pullups/chinups work wonders for a beginner. Rows and squats can occasionally be alternated with deadlifts (heavy squats will carryover to the deadlift, however deadlifts don't always carry over to the squat).
