4c hair is harder to detect ‘straight damage’ but curlier textures you notice it rights away and it kind of ruins the look of your hair. I have straight damage on the left front side of my hair from puffs and buns and it’s infuriating when I try to wash and go.

@@jamiek2327 babes you don't have to tell me about curly hair. It's on my head. As soon as you step out of the shower your hair is not magically tangled to the point all you can do is blow dry it for it to untangle it. you should be detangling curlg hair when it's wet in the shower. If you're worried or stressed about tangles leave your hair parted in the sections to detangle them in. It's really that simple. If you rather blow dry your hair just say that. For about 2 years, I 2-strand twisted fresh after a wash and deep condition. My hair grew like crazy but I was confused why I kept getting fairy knots. Then I noticed a patch of missing hair one day and was even more confused. I decided to blow dry and couldn't believe how uneven and broken off my hair had become. The 2-strand twisting hid this problem. So I got a good cut and have my hair pressed by a professional once a month. My hair is now almost waist length with no more knots and missing hair. Straightening my natural hair personally has helped me.

I’m a natural hair girl and I can say after washing my hair I air dry and don’t have the brittleness at all. I put moisturizer in my hair while it’s still wet section by section and let it continue air drying. Never had a problem. Blow drying is what makes my hair crunchy and dried out plus the ends feel hard. If you’re a natural hairstylist you should know how to work with natural hair in all stages. Everyone doesn’t conform to the same standards for their hair care regime and that’s okay. Do what works for you. I’ve completed my 1,000 cosmetology course while in high school over 20 years ago. I have blow dried my hair when I was younger but have completely changed my routine that works for me. Just saying everyone is different but if I go to a stylist and they tell me they can only blow dry my hair which is thick and course I will leave. Stylist should be able to adapt to their clients. If you moisturize your hair it won’t be hard from my experience. And don’t forget to put a leave in conditioner it helps with other products of your choice. My hair is long and healthy as well. I section my hair in braids to stretch it as well. Have a blessed day. 😊❤

I think blow drying does weaken the hair to some degree, making deep conditioning necessary. This may be why a lot of naturals think they have to deep condition every wash day, bc they are used to it from when they use to perm or flat iron their hair regularly. Without heat (or other damaging chemicals), I don't need to deep condition. So that tells me it does weaken the hair. That being said, I know "straight hair naturals" who flat iron regularly and still have healthy hair, so it's all about knowing how to maintain your hair, just like color.

It depends on how you like to style your hair. If you plan to wear your hair curly most of the time, regular blowdrying doesn't make sense. But if, like me, you want to wear your hair in stretched styles and manage it with minimum effort, blowdrying can be helpful if done properly.

Yes, fight against texture. Why do you think black women use so much gel and holding spray? When you want to wear a style that your natural hair texture doesn’t want to play along with, you use products to aid and there’s nothing wrong with that. We can wear our hair however we want, without your permission or approval. I was blow drying my hair every time a went to get braids and my natural hair just didn’t feel the same after 2 years of blowing it out so much. So I cut it off and now I’m starting fresh and I’m never gonna put that thing in my hair again. I think I need to show more love to my hair and learn to have more patience. The heat and tension from blow drying causes damage. It just makes it easier for stylist to style your hair. They just don't want to deal with (or know how to) style natural hair. I wish they would just admit that instead of staying blow drying doesn't cause damage. Blowing once or second a year is not too bad but if you do it frequently then your hair will fall out. Doesn't matter how much you protective style.

My hair is a little dense, but the strands are medium to fine. It stretches easily with tension and low heat. Low heat is good for pre braids. Higher heat resists reversion better for a couple weeks of wear. My straighter hair does maintain length better, because I get fairy knots really bad when my hair is worn freely and curly. Heated stretching provides luster, moisture retention, and manageability. I don't always blowout before a heat brush. Sometimes I just apply one form of heat.

@Clara i think they’re saying why would a natural hairstylist blow dry natural hair for every style if they’re supposed to be able to work with textured hair? I’m not sure if thats what they mean but its a valid question. Not everyones hair is gonna react the same to heat or be managed better that way, it depends on the health state of that persons hair. To offer blowdrying service for some hairstyles is one thing but if they do it for everyone of the clients, how can they claim to be a “natural hairstylist”? What would they say if their client asked not to be blowed out or use heat? What other methods are they going to use to stretch the hair to be better manageable and best for the hairs health. I wonder if blowdrying comes with the style you book or if its an additional charge. Some places ask you to go blowed out and already washed and just go for the style, otherwise it cost extra for those services. Man i dunno but the natural hair community confuses me sometimes.

When I was on my natural hair journey, I was told that you can’t apply any heat to your hair. When I took that advice my hair got so matted and tangled up. 7 years after going natural, I started blow drying my hair again and I haven’t had problems with matting and tangles. I’ve been blow drying my hair ever since. That’s the only way for me to stop my hair from matting up and I have BSL length hair so blow drying has worked wonders for me.

💯 This is exactly how Dominican stylists get the legendary sleek straight blowouts. They will always blow first, then touch up lightly with flat iron. The rapid turning brush technique they use also helps polish or Smooth the hair cuticle down, which makes it shinier and more humidity resistant

I tried a DOMINICAN Stylist in the past; and I said NEVER AGAIN. They used TOO MUCH HEAT on my natural hair. NEVER AGAIN. No thanks.

I’ve been natural since 2009 and consistently have hair my hair blow dried and get compliments on how healthy it is you have to use a ceramic blow dryer and the right products to prevent heat damage and my stylist is a national Paul Mitchell Rep and she taught me so much about using quality products and flat irons/ blow dryers for African American hair

My sister has been blow drying her hair for many years since she always styled her hair. I don't style my hair much and I also don't blow dry my hair very much. Guess who has more healthy hair at age 66 and 69? Yes, me, the one that hardly ever blows dries her hair

When I first went natural I washed my hair every 2 weeks. Air drying was fine until my hair grew longer. The longer my hair got the longer it took to dry. Once I found out my was growing mold i never air dried my hair again.

@@malakahbanathyasharahla2302 my hair is very thick. When my hair grew longer i did the African treading to stretch my hair. id let it dry as much as possible overnight then wore a puff the next day. the middle of my hair would never dry. luckily i didnt have any scalp issues from it.

An alternative is to do braid out/twist outs and stretch your roots and the shaft of your hair with the blow dryer on low heat this keeps the hair stretched until it’s time to wash, diminishing single strand knots which aids in length retention and makes for easier wash days. I do this once a week and my hair is healthy and long. Figure out what natural hair methods work best for you and don’t feel like you have to straighten your curl to keep it “manageable”. Don’t fight against the texture, work with it

I think blow drying is ok for hair and could even contribute to hair growth, i also think there’s a learning curve to everything and if u don’t take time to learn it could be damaging. I was never good at distributing the heat evenly, so i would burn my hair. I now rollerset bc im good at that, i will literally do it multiple times a week if needed. It took years to figure out this process tho.
