great video - I have one - got it from Romania - I adore him...he's my constant companion - but I live in a fully fenced 1 acre yard and I take him for walks - never off-leash - he's not trustworthy AT ALL - will take off as soon as you take the leash off and he's not road smart But I adore him and don't know how to ever replace him - because I can't afford to do that again - just not enough money - He's the best dog I ever had.

I fell in love with this breed when my friend got one ten years ago honestly you have never been round a big dog until you meet one of these I have a 3yr old male I got from pup he’s a big softy he scares people because of his size and loud bark if you knock at the door but apart from that he’s chill which we are lucky for early socialisation is a MUST if you want one as a pet they are no joke if you think you’ll have a really obedient dog 😂 yeah they do sit n stay sometimes but they are very strong willed and independent bring them up with the family not in your garden as you would have already failed

My grandfather had 6 to 8 of the Caucasian Ovcharka dogs to tend his herd of 400 sheep in the Romanian countryside. These dogs were bred over generations in the family. In the late 1800s my ancestors got them from Georgia (the country) and just bred them and introduced new dogs to prevent inbreeding. They are great working dogs. My grandfather loved them and would groom them. He and close family members were the only ones allowed to be near them. They were like family pets but they did kill wolves when protecting the sheep. No one should have this breed in the city or if they do not know how to handle a breed like this one. My grandfather has passed away and now my uncle has taken over the cheese and wool business. He also breeds the dogs and has loyal customers from Australian and New Zealand paying top euros for puppies. All the dogs he has have excellent genes and hip problems do not exist in his dogs. Your dog is gorgeous. I wonder if you found a brave groomer to take care of his double cout and nails. My grandfather and now my uncle are the only ones that could groom those dogs.With so many dogs, they would spend and hour each day and kept the dogs looking "pretty" as my grandfather would say.

Generally, I encourage people to have real experience with dogs of this nature. These dogs are powerful. And if they see a threat, they will let you know. If they attack, they are hard to let go of a threat.

Thank you for being open and honest about your beautiful Max. Note the fur. Max's dog family was created for a colder mountain region, they aren't really made for warm climates. Shepherd dogs like him or a Turkish Kangal are smart, self-reliant herd dogs that guard entire herds by themselves. Sometimes for days, they don't have to respect you if you haven't done your homework about them. They even fight wild animals like wolves.

@@signalfire6691 Lol. Daily? Wrong goofy. You groom a double-coated dog at least four times a year to help pull out the dead undercoat. What remains of the undercoat after a seasonal coat blow helps to hold cool air close to the skin and the double layers protect against sunburn. Nature knows best.

We had one back home when I was a kid. He was very territorial, and all dogs in the area were afraid of him. If a pack comes up one bark from our dog and maybe one would be left. That one leaves too after a pause. 😂 he was a friend with a dog in his puppy days, sadly around 2 years old, he went for that dog’s throat ( that’s how they kill threats fast… wolves, bears…)… needless to say it died. Our dog was all to him self. Very rarely barked though. As big as he was he would creep up quietly on a stranger… usually get on his back paws and place his front paws on strangers shoulders (be closer to the neck). You are right. They are excellent fearless protection dog, ridiculously smart. Oh I miss his face so much. He was magnificent! Thank you for sharing. It’s not a common breed in the US.

This has to be the best Ovcharka video I’ve seen Our little girl turned three last week And her life is very similar to what you’re showing your boys is We have several larger dogs (fila, presa, Great Pyrenees..) that are her best friend But we also have three Shih Tzu’s which even though she likes, we keep away for the same reason that you keep your little one away . She incredible, friendly and loving with very vocal towards strangers we walk We have to be very careful But I’m so glad she’s in her life Once again, best video out there on this breed well done

Nice video thanks for your realistic review of this breed. We had a similar breed of dog a few years ago- the Sarplaninac. Similar looks, size, behaviour and also a livestock guardian. Like you, we were living in a city with a garden, but she was very difficult and not like any other dog we've had in my lifetime. As you say "stubborn" and independent. She ended up having to live with a relative in the countryside as her huge bark at night was disturbing our neighbours in an urban setting. Like you say at 2 years old, she became particularly difficult. Even for an experienced dog owner, these breeds are challenging, especially if they are not working and they can be a bit like having a loaded gun when you're having guests, or out walking them! Generally I would advise against them as house pets. Other livestock guardian breeds like the Pyrenees and Maremma are slightly more domesticated as breeds. Best wishes and you have a nice gang of pets there.

I was hearth broken but it was a very good decision when l think about it now days. Massive beautiful but very slow learning and unpredictable.

My neighbor had a male CO . He wasn't very aggressive, I was a stranger " to the dog and was able to pet it w no problem, no growling or barking. However her CO was very aloof , often scanning surroundings constantly, seemed disconnected if I tried to get the dog to play or interact. Seems just fixed on environment wasn't unfriendly but not clowny Labrador looking to play play play 24/7. I've always loved CO , I have a crush on the breed. But I don't have space or time to dedicate to such a channeling breed , so not fair for a CO. ❤️ . God bless the people that have thus beautiful breed

Some breeds need a massive amount of exercise. They need lots of space and trails to run on. I had a German Shepard and she was happy running on the trails in woods. They need to get that energy out. If you get a LSGD or any kind of guard dog training should start day 1. Crate training, food aggression, Basic comands like sit, down, stay, leave it..... It is well worth it in the long run. I have seen first hand many people fail these types of dog breeds. The last few years I have dealt mostly with Central Asian shepherds puppies & adults. My friend is a certified dog trainer & also owns many Central Asian Shepherds & has written the only book about them. I have come across 5 Caucasions in the last 4 years. All trained well enough I could touch them. But I was not ever gonna ask to do so. I know they can be more aggressive than a central asian shepherd. People friendly caucasions is a defect in them. Just like it is with Central Asian Shepherds aka Alabai

I won't get one until I have the time required and proper property to ensure others are safe and my dogs are safe.

The Alabai is very different from the Caucasian Ovcharka. Much more calmer and can be handled in the presence of strangers despite being bigger. My CO, no one could stop him in the face of danger - basically any man alive and breathing - and he would go ballistic. My Alabai is very calm and read my reaction.

COs can be made to he peoppe friendly in the presence of their trusted handlers. It's not a defect, but a result of a lot of work. Now, if your CO is happy with random strangers when nobody is around, it's broken lol

We have 6 dogs here, 2 Chihuahuas, 3 Shih Tzus and an Ovcharca........ They all live here in our house. The other day little Chi was sick, the Ovcharca did not leave her side! His best friend is Gizmo, our Shih Tzu, when she is scared (eg with fireworks or other dogs while walking) he lies down and she climbs on top of him for support! They can take the food out of his mouth, he will do anything for the little ones! He will not growl at children, we live opposite a school and when we go for a walk they always ask me if they can pet him. He prefers them to hang around his neck! But, if someone touches the little ones or us, he won't let brands do it. He stands "tight" and puts a paw on the other dog's back, the other dog goes through, shows his teeth. The whole neighborhood loves our big friendly giant Lupi!

🤔 The true origin of this breed is that it was developed by the Soviet Union Military as guard dogs for the prisons and the border guards. These dog where developed by crossing CAO with several breeds of livestock guardians and working type dogs. These are not pets these are working dogs it’s just that simple. These are not dogs for homes with small children, inexperienced owners or people who are physically and mentally weak. These are not dogs you let strangers or guest to your home pet. These dogs are best suited to farms, large estates and homes with large yards.

100%, these guys and Akitas, top of the food chain when it comes to dog breeds, not for the inexperienced, and the real truth is 99% of people, even people who decide to get a dog, know little to nothing about dogs. Experienced with dogs also doesn’t count if your experience is with little poodles, Cockapoos or large but mellow breeds like labs and golden retrievers. Would require someone experienced with large powerful dogs with guarding tendencies, and even then they may still struggle. Like the Akita, they have a handful of people they’re affectionate to, but to strangers they’re absolute monsters towards. I got bit by my cousin’s American line Akita the first day I met her, and she was still a growing 9 month old puppy, already 44kg at that age. The Caucasian is almost like an American Akita on steroids in my book. The temperament, even somewhat similar colouring and bear like appearance. The man in this video “you just like big fluffy dogs”, red flag if someone is basing their reason for getting this breed on that. There are many gentle giant fluffy dogs to choose from, like St Bernards, Newfoundland’s or Bernese Mountain dogs, which are a world of difference in temperament to this breed.

The only thing that Caucasian shepherd has over the CAIN CORSO is the fluffy hair around his neck which gives it an advantage in not getting bit in his throat from a wolf bite .

My understanding was that the Caucasian shepherd was created by Red Star kennels during the cold war, and that the "land race" style history you described is more applicable to the Alabai/Central Asian shepherd.

The giant 200+ pound CO dogs were made by the communists in the Red Star kennels of USSR. They are excessively agressive and so not make good pets nor livestock guardians. Most breeders will not sell these to homeowners. My CO s do not play ball or games. They are working guardian dogs. Run them beside a bike for a couple hours daily for exercise. I don't understand why people want a big dog that is capable of seriously injuring threats only to try and make them "pets". Get a dog that has the characterics you need. Want a good pet, get a golden retriever. Want to keep bad guys away. COs are great.

@@_Another_Idea_ Yes I'm in Las Vegas. My dogs prefer the winter weather but summers aren't a problem of you keep lots of water on hand. I can't recommend a breeder at this time. Mine had too many dogs to care for properly due to the pandemic shut down. Very unfortunate results. The authorities confiscated 172 large dogs and destroyed them although they had never harmed anyone. They were too aggressive to be adopted. That's true but that isn't very good animal care. Sad.

@@jerrelhintergardt6898 The Caucasian shepherd is an ancient breed, so old they are first mentioned as being used by Armenian armies in the 1st Century BC,the Russians try'd to make this breed better but as they learned the breed was made by nature to be how it is,a lot of adult caucasian were killed to get the pups of them in the caucuses mountains in the early days,and Alot of farmers were killed to get there dogs,the Russians have and will always be fake,my caucasians parents were standard size,mum was 65 kilos dad was 105 kilos,around 200+lbs,love the breed so much,the loyalty is unbelievable.

@@beccaleabs4528 Hi Becca. Good information. I'm glad you have and enjoy your CO. Lots is jerks around here try to get they dogs for fighting but breeders won't sell them for that. I was referring to the dogs here now. The Nye County animal control seized the dogs 172 dogs and killed them about 2 weeks ago. The Russians I mentioned were actually the Bolchevich communists in 1920 who seized the dogs and bred them for military and prison use. They didn't work out for livestock work. There are some large ones here but everyone I know if got them from Vacilli of Est Alpha kennels. Vacilli is going to prison. There is a lot more to the story and it isn't over yet but the dogs were killed.

Only very very experienced dog handlers should own this dog / it’s bloodlines are pure and unmolested / they can be aggressive and require a ton of work / this dog is not suited for lazy dog owners / don’t waste your time with this breed if you cannot dedicate the time to properly train and care for this dog breed !!

Yep, the Akita is on the level of challenging as this breed. Both Akitas and Ovcharkas will not accept any outsider unless introduced as a young puppy. That includes your friends and family. They can (will) get bitten. No one but the most experienced of dog owners should have these breeds and even they will struggle. By experienced, if your dog experience is little poodles, cockapoos, Goldendoodles and other soft breeds like that, you’re not cut out for Akitas or Ovcharkas. They need owners experienced with other large powerful guard dog breeds

Caucasian shepherds are on a totally different level compared to a Akita. Akita is no different to any medium size dogs
@f1601-q9l
@f1601-q9l 2 жыл бұрын
@@kieron9581 no different in what way? In size you’re correct if you’re referring to the Japanese Akita, they’re not much more than medium size. The American Akita, however, can weigh as much as 135lb or more, due to its mastiff blood. As for temperament, “any medium sized dog” doesn’t tell me anything, there are many medium sized breeds each with their own temperament. Some small dogs, not even medium sized, can have headstrong, dominant temperaments too.

@@beccaleabs4528 yep, exactly that. By wrong hands- that includes people inexperienced with large dominant guard dog breeds getting a hold of one of these top of the food chain dog breeds. Absolutely scary. When a dog like that doesn’t think you’re the boss, it will make its own mind up, including attacking an innocent by-passer, and the inexperienced owner will have no idea how to control it. The truth is 99% of the public know little to nothing about dogs and have no business getting either breed. Either that, or those encouraging their already natural aggression for the ego boost of having a big scary dog, the so called “status” dog which is what you see with breeds like pit bulls. Honestly, Akitas and Ovcharkas make pit bulls look like poodles. The largest American Akitas are 135-40lb, however, that’s still the smaller end for an Ovcharka, they’re absolutely massive. Neither breed are small by any stretch of the imagination. The Ovcharka reminds me very much of an American Akita on steroids, the temperament and similar colouring, and people falling into the trap of getting them on a whim with little research just because they like their fluffy appearance. As puppies they look alike, like little bear cubs, but soon turn into monsters fully grown.
