Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. I really feel for the Empress here. Zizheng entered the palace when he was 8 years old, and I'm guessing she stepped in and became his mother-figure. She understands all the pain he suffered growing up there, as an outsider, since she too, was basically an outsider. Even though she was Empress, she still felt alone all those years. So, she totally understands where he's coming from. And looks upon him as her child. So, while she loves Shaoshang, and is supportive of her, she also loves him and hates to see the little boy she raised, suffer. She is an awesome lady.

🌸 Yes, she loves both of them but sees Zizheng as one of her children. She’s a very caring woman. Also she and her mother were starving when she was little so she has empathy for them.

I've had to go through the drudgerous work of forgiveness and boy do I praise them for showing a real version of it, even for the person who has to do the atoning. I love that all while the audience is "taking his side" and demanding she get over herself after 5yrs, he reminds us that he knows her best and will always be willing to wait. Them being in close proximity will crack that remaining empty shell of unforgiveness.

Yeah, I'm really annoyed at the audience siding with the male lead no matter what. It seems to me that Zisheng (very realistically, actually) didn't even want to be forgiven that much. I mean, he felt so guilty about everything, and even worse, I think he was psychologically drained by so many years of scheming and lying and concealing himself that he was (at least a bit) deranged. He made a massacre, come on. I don't think he was ready to get back in a relationship. I can't say I see how his five years of suicidal missions helped, but somehow he seems much better after that.

@@pirimpallopirimpalli4932 From my understanding there were some crucial scenes between them after he came back that were in the novel but for reasons the team didn't film it, went with a different route, or it didn't make the final edit. Both of their upbringings were traumatic so they both had a lot of work to do for healing. That five years did them good. I'm sure his daredevil acts help exercised some of his demons and coming back to her further healed him a lot more especially his guilt towards her. He couldn't see her again just to let her go plus marry someone he knew she didn't love and settle for that boring existence she proclaimed she wanted way back in a earlier episode (I like to think he would've preferred she never marry in that case). The writer could have gone a different way with their relationship in the end and it would've been understandable given both their nature but I'm pleased with it working out the way it did.

@@suspendeddisbelief786 yeah, after all that drama they gave us a fluffy, "woke" ending. Not too too sappy, just a little bit. But somebody here on KZbin said that they were working on more episodes that should cover that part, apparently, and be aired next March. I have no idea whatsoever if that's just a rumor

@@pirimpallopirimpalli4932 Yes, I like that it wasn't standard fluff, it fit the characters in my opinion. However, I've heard the novel does give them a proper wedding for all to see and so a lot of the audience was not pleased that the adaptation didn't give them that (much like the Emperor was 🤭😉). I like the ending as it was a nice clean break for me to leave them and the world on. If they do end up doing a short of epilogue miniseries I don't know if I'll watch as it's not a true continuation of the world but an apology and makeup to the audience who complained. But who knows...

@@suspendeddisbelief786 from what that commenter wrote (sorry, I wouldn't know where to go find that comment, it was on one of these videos with random parts of the series), it wasn't exactly a "make up later" thing. Basically, the series would have been too long with those scenes and they cut them out, or ended the series earlier. But those scenes were shot, or maybe were planned to be shot, to make a continuation later. So it's not an afterthought, but something they couldn't fit in the original plan and left for a later scheduling. After all, this series in in two seasons already. Maybe it's for a similar reason. But, again, I couldn't find any confirmation on other sources. And I'm trying to have a look at the novel, but you know how the little differences can make the whole thing hard to follow if you don't read it all from the beginning? And it's a pretty long novel... But, to go back to the point, it shouldn't be something that cuts in between, it should be the rest of the story: wedding and future parts, that are actually in the novel but weren't fit in the TV show. So it would not be a rewriting of anything, not something adapted from secondary or unrelated sources just for audience's demand.

I kinda disagree, because she needed time to heal and whatever, but he was the one in a much worse place and needed to work on himself a lot more before he could be in a relationship. He was not willing to live at the time, what kind of partner would he make? Hopefully he's back in a steadier shape. I mean, she fell in love with a guy who just up and demanded her in marriage, if they want to salvage that relationship he needs to find a balance between his present selflessness and his original strength of character. And he needs to want it. Forgiveness must also be asked for. He sort of needs to grovel, not just suffer in the shadows.

Shan’an is my favorite character in this drama. Everyone loves the main leads or the emperor. I love her….she is such a sweet, kind,beautiful, understanding, smart loving lady. I cried in this scene, so sad 😭

she was never vulgar and hardly ill-mannered. she was innocent and naïve, and now she's more emotionally drained than anything. she has matured and knows proper courtly conduct, and she has seen quite a lot of scheming and planning and bloodshed, so now things like these pale in comparison. she's calm because of that, the Empress only taught her how to hold herself and supported her through a very difficult time in life, but her maturity comes from her experience

No, the Empress has a heart condition and was experiencing depression due to her situation, which exasperated her condition more. Even though I love the trio (Emperor, Empress and Consort) the whole situation was not good. I got to give them credit, that they made their situation work to be a harmonious trio. But when it comes down to the truth, their relationship was one sided. The Emperor loved and favored Consort Yue, and the only reason why was he had met her first and made her his wife in their youth. But his family wishing to strengthen their power, while he was ensuring victory after victory against Emperor Li, they order him to marry the Empress since her family has a royal lineage tied. I had no doubt they had issues at first but they did worked together which led to them all having a good relationship with each other.
