The preseason is over and we've now seen all eight UAAP teams play (thanks UST for joining the preseason tournaments haha). We all love to pretend we're coaches, so we're bringing back one of our favorite segments: If You Were Coach. What would you do if you were the coach of your team?

Agree with what was said on UP and coach Gold. We need more 3 pt shooting from the stars lalo. We cant rely on JD’s play at end of games all the time. UP has good sets but because of inconsistent shooting nasasayang. Lopez is improving naman pero just as you said, needs a go to move in the midrange or inside with his height and strength.

If he can get a decent pull up midrange shot or a more consistent three point shot, he will dominate the UAAP. And if this happens, pro teams will definitely come knocking on his door - Gab

Dun sa improvement ni Lopez, ang dagdag ko lang, walang set na opensa ang UP na poposte sya at ibabackdown ang defensive man nya (parang yung pinaggawa kay KQ against Alarcon) Wala ding mid range Laging galing sa labas At puro tres o drive sa kaliwa At tulad last year ang mga bato nya sa wings pagdrive ay umaalagwa Akala ko din si Alrcon na best shooter nila this year pero inconsistent. Liban dun Agree w all you said about UP

I don't think Coach Gold will ever go to a iso Francis Lopez offense. He will stick to his system, especially in close games But in blowouts, I want to see him experiment more with Francis - Gab

Hi Guys! The following are Areas for Improvement for the respective UAAP men’s basketball teams: The rankings shown consider all the teams; including those from the NCAA. 1) ADAMSON: Field Goal Shooting, Free Throw Shooting, Playmaking, Turnovers FG= 35.5% (2nd worst), 2Pt FG = 40.8% (2nd worst), 3Pt FG = 26.7% (2nd worst), FT = 54.5% (worst), Assists = 12.4/game (worst), Turnovers = 18.9/game (3rd worst) 2) ATENEO: Total Offense FG= 28.6% (worst), 2Pt FG = 38.6% (worst), 3Pt FG = 22.4% (worst), Fastbreak Points = 5.1/game (worst), Points in the Paint = 16.9/game (worst), Points from Turnovers = 16.9/game (worst), Assists = 13.1/game (2nd worst) 3) DLSU: Turnovers = 20.7/game (worst) KQ leads with 2.7 turnovers/game and Agunanne follows with 2.6 turnovers/game. KQ makes 3.7 assists/game but in only one game (vs FEU) did he had 9 assists vs 3 turnovers. Otherwise, he has either the same number of assists and turnovers or has one more assist. As a comparison, in UAAP Season 86, KQ averaged 2.8 turnovers per game; but he was making 5.2 assists per game. DLSU averaged 15.4 turnovers per game that season. 4) FEU: 3Pt Shooting and Steals 3Pt FG = 26.7% (4th worst), Steals = 8/game (3rd worst) 5) NU: Play-making Assists = 13.9/game (3rd worst) Their offense is a middle-ranked performer as they rely on one-on-one plays. 6) UE: 2 Pt Field Goal Shooting, Offensive Rebounding (OR), Points in the Paint (PIP), Points from Turnover (PFT) 2Pt FG = 41.9% (3rd worst), OR = 8.8/game (2nd worst) PIP = 19/game (2nd worst), PFT = 12.6/game (4th worst) 7) UP: Offensive Rebounding = 9.1/game (3rd worst). As a comparison, UP averaged 14.6 offensive rebounds a game the whole of UAAP Season 86. 8) UST: 2 Pt Field Goal Shooting, Free Throw Shooting (FT), and Playmaking 2Pt FG = 42.5% (4th worst), FT = 57.4% (4TH worst), Assists = 14/game (4th worst)

If I were the maroons coach, I’d limit Alarcon’s touches and shot attempts and keep felicilda at the bench. BTW, I agree, give Lopez more freedom to run plays. His handles is still a work in progress but his playmaking potential is quite apparent. You know, even if he doesn’t make his shots at times, he can always make up for it through his lockdown defense (when he decides to). But, teach him and always remind him to box out.

Alarcon was primed to be the main man kasi last season (they were running the offense through him a lot during last preseason), which is why he takes a bunch of shots. Unfortunately, i think guys like Abadiano and JD have clearly surpassed him already for that role

Nice episode guys! NU - I think NU should choose Diassana. We’ve already seen that Final 4 is too much to handle for Omar John, so I feel like it’s a good time to field Diassana in the UAAP. He needs to get UAAP experience kasi if not now, when? For me, Diassana is the future FSA of NU na e. UE - Agree with Maui that the UE players definitely have other reasons for leaving. FEU and AdU also do not give big monetary benefits, but their skilled college players do not leave them for a university with bigger budget (Manzano, Lastimosa, RJ, Ljay, etc). Kumpara sa UE where both skilled and non-skilled players have left. UP - “Stop recruiting” lol Maui 😂 Pero parang a lot of the players, if they won’t transfer or turn pro early, would run out of playing years at the same time (Abadiano’s batch I think)? Needs to be more strategic when it comes to recruitment, di lang basta hakot ng magaling. UST - If I were Coach Pido, I will give even more chances sa assistant coaches ko to call plays. A lot of people were saying na si Coach Juno mainly nagc-coach noong FilOil.

Agree with your points. Same sentiment kay diassana. Kapag mabasa ito ni Omar John, he won't be pleased again 😂 Also, I think you'll see Coach Pido take more of a backseat in terms of play calling this season. There were signs already last season and from this preseason - Gab

NU - If I'm Coach Jeff Napa, I'll choose Diassana as my FSA. He's very versatile, can contribute on both sides of the court. And I'll let my players make mistakes ane learn from it, Coach Yeng prove to us in the PBA, pababawiin ka pag nagkamali ka. UE - I think Momowei, as Gab mentioned, work on his free throws, but 10k Free Throws?! Brutal yun bro haha, I swear man even if he still makes 10k fts I don't think it is a solution hehe, mapapagod kamay nya haha but I think the only way he can improve FTs is if he finds and peefects the form effective to shoot FTs, and he develops his composure when he needs to shoot FTs in pressure packed moments. And If I'm Coach Jack, I do really hope that I can convince SGA to back the seniors program when they're building a good program sa Juniors, and it will ba good move so many Jr Warriors could to elevate as Red Warriors. And of course, get the most out of the remaining guys that are still with UE, especially the newcomers. I think Mulingtapang will be the starting PG IMO. UP - If I'm Coach Gold, I'll tell them don't hurry their shots and play more Chicco Briones mins. I think Chicco is a vital piece especially his shooting will be badly needed cuz CJ Cansino is not around. But UP's concern is not always shooting, it's when they shoot. We saw that last Finals vs DLSU, in the dying mins they're trying to hit the home run all the time, masyado nilang minamadali ang offense nila instead of slowing down and taking time to set up. So I think Coach Gold must run sime go to plays in the clutch instead of rushing it when there's a lot of time on the clock. UST - If I'm Coach Pido, gonna be unlikely but with the help of Coach Juno, I will make big changes in the way they play. No more unli iso plays, More ball movement, more player movement, or maybe I can let Coach Juno run the offense, With the talent that UST has in their team, I think UST must create plays according to their strengths, and will create plays for everyone, not just Nic, but all 16 guys should have plays that will get them points. So the system they should use now, regardless of the FSA that will parade (I'm leaning towards Tounkara) should maximize the whole roster, and showcase how deep is deep this team is. And of course, Join more tournaments and play more tuneups as long as di natatapos ang laro sa suntukan, the last tuneup game they have, it ended on a fistfight 😅

Also, good observation on UP knowing when to take the shots. In the finals last year, I believe that was a result of benching JD in the clutch. This year, I hope they know that JD is their #1 option and those home run plays won't happen again - Gab

I agree Maui. It's a short and quick season so it wouldn't be wise to use most of it breaking in a new FSA. Fielding a new FSA would just put them sort of in a rebuilding mode whereas having Omar John gives them a realistic shot.

They have to choose and prioritize one. Its getting near already. I understand during Pinoy Liga season when they could rotate both and easily compare them. They struggled during Filoil bec of this I think. -Maui

I so agree with Precious Momowei. He really needs to sink in those free throws. Although an additional thing I think C.Jack Santiago could work on is trying to develop better chemistry amongst his team's members. When things get tight, their shooters seem to take upom themselves the responsibility of carrying the team on their own vs. executing plays or rotating the ball more. Am not sure but I don't feel they fully trust each other yet.

Good observation. That's the thing when there is no continuity from year to year. No chemistry and a lot of feeling each other out That's also an effect of losing a Remogat with no direct replacement

Stability is overrated. Sometimes that one change is what might get you over the hump. Think Steve Kerr coming in for Mark Jackson. Or Larry Brown coming in for Rick Carlisle. Or Jrue Holiday coming in for Brogdon and Williams. What might have worked to make you a contender might sometimes need a little shakeup for you to go all the way. Diassana over John.

I beleive Tounkara is the best FSA this season (yes, not Agunanne) so I would be surprised if UST does not choose him. Also, might be better to start Paranada over Padrigao to jumpstart the offense and have stability coming from the bench.

Also, on Paranada vs Padrigao. I'm guessing the thinking on bringing Paranada off the bench is as a spark plug for scoring (6th man role). Padrigao has more stability, as you said, and is a connector so makes sense beside Nic Cabañero. Also, Padrigao has a better connection with Tounkara from what I've seen - Gab

Francis Lopez has a couple of weaknesses. His handles and mid and long range shooting. You normally can't teach these. I believe coach Gold is already optimizing his skills in a way that's best suited for the team.

His handles has already improved and will continue to improve. It’s still not that good but it has improved. You see , before, he only had that one “power dribble” going to the basket, anything more than one dribble, his drive would already turn weak. Now, so long as it’s a straight line drive , it’s still a strong drive. Has also seen him nail a sudden change of pace move, that’s something that he didn’t have before. His outside shooting has been on and off but I can also say that he’s improved there too.
@bolerosph
@bolerosph 2 ай бұрын
I agree he has improved naman. Not doubting that It's the rate of his improvement that worries me. I don't want him staying in the UAAP until he's 25 (max out 5 years eligibility). Sayang naman prime basketball years niya. If he still has hopes of playing in the NBA or even higher tier leagues, he should showcase now while he's still 21/22 - Gab
@rcd2005
@rcd2005 2 ай бұрын
Stats say Lopez is more of a streaky outside shooter than a purely bad one. He’s had 2 or 3 games shooting 50-60% from deep. Then he matches that with other games going 0/5, 0/6. Lopez has been a severely underrated passer since last season, but he needs a spin move to complement his slashing package. He does have a drop pass ability aside from a kick out, so that’s also good. What Lopez really, really needs to learn is a middy game, which considering his height and athleticism, would be unstoppable at the UAAP level.
@rcd2005
@rcd2005 2 ай бұрын
I would say the reason why Lopez doesn’t seem to improve is that he, for better or for worse, plays too much within the system. Coach never allows him to iso. FEU game in FilOil showed he could take over if needed. He needs more of those reps, as counter-intuitive as it sounds.
