I bought my All American Canner in 1999. It was a lot of money at the time, but not when you see today’s prices. We knew this was an investment.
@thehometownhomestead
@thehometownhomestead Ай бұрын
It’s definitely pricey, but the savings that comes from it is worth it. I have seen a few on FB marketplace lately also, which is where I always recommend looking first. I got my digital that way, and it was basically NEW and half off. The beauty of an All American is there is nothing to break or go wrong to need replacing down the road. If I can find another for the 1999 price, I might grab another. 🙌🏻

@thehometownhomestead

@@jennifersaylor8717 that’s scary!!! We’ve been trained to assume that the grocery store is always going to be open. For many reasons, that might not always be the case. It’s time to get started for those who aren’t doing so already.

Yes, I can. I can feed each person in my household 2000 calories per day, for more than two years. And do several methods of grid down cooking. And use stored clean drinking water when cooking. A year's worth of food per adult or teen, at 2000 calories per day is, 730,000 calories (2000 calories x 365 days). And my emergency food storage, with the exception of cooking oil, is all long-term food storage ingredients that include treats such as freeze-dried sirloin steaks, freeze-dried pulled pork, freeze-dried shrimp and freeze-dried sliced avocadoes and dehydrated mangoes. I focus on stockpiling long-term food storage ingredients, most of which are good for 20 years of storage, because I hate using my money to replace/rotate regular short-term pantry food from the supermarket. You just never know if replacements for that regular pantry food will be available at prices you can afford or even available at all during a prolonged disaster. I like to buy a long-term food storage item, store it properly and just forget about it until I may need it in 5, 10 or 20 years. You can bet food prices will be higher in 5, 10 or 20 years, but I have locked in the price at the time I buy that long-term food storage item.

@@gonefishing3644 do you own a freeze dryer? I have visions of making that happen in the next few years.
@gonefishing3644
@gonefishing3644 Ай бұрын
@thehometownhomestead No freeze drier. I could not justify its cost and the space it takes up. I can buy a lot of food storage for what a freeze dryer costs. Now if I had a flock of hens, a fruit orchard and a large vegetable garden it would make economic sense to be able to freeze dry.

Nobody knows exactly how long they need to prep for. For our family, we could probably survive for a while, but we cannot get enough water to last a month or so. Don't have enough room. Another problem, we don't always think about having extra for those family/friends that may show up occasionally.

Outdoor solar spot lights are great lights to use in the house when you lose electricity too. I have a mop bucket with a wringer to wash clothes in too along with a plunger that's just for the laundry. You can keep the wash water and flush with it so there's no wasted water. I have cans of sterno so if I need to heat something to eat and it's not weather wise or safe outside to cook on the grill. I bought a weed sprayer to use to shower with if we can't have running water or we have no power. We do a military shower with it. (get wet,shut off the water,soap up then turn the water on and rinse off.) Several people can shower on just a few gallons of water that way too and you don't have to shower everyday either but if you do have to then this is the best way I have found to shower. A bucket with a pool noodle on top for a seat and a garbage bag in it can be used for number 2 and a old bowl in the bottom can be for pee. Then you just dump the pee outside and then no need for extra water. This is good for people that don't have a septic to do. 2 plastic dish pans(buckets) to do dishes in really helps too. This is just some things I do when we lose power so I hope this helps somebody ❤.
