I avoid a lot of the issues brought up in this video by getting camera systems which are not cloud based and then have the system on an isolated part of my network. Only way to access the camera feeds externally is via a VPN connection to my edge firewall. All cameras are hard wired with video being stored on a local NVR.

Easiest and cheapest way to avoid this is to use your own firmware on something like a Raspberry Pi system. I have mine running local small model ai and it works great for object detection.

I regard the simplest solution to be NOT to connect to a network unless it is absolutely necessary. I connect only for updates and disconnect immediately thereafter. I discovered remote monitoring just eats up data. I could be watching someone break in and do nothing. Calling the police in Namibia for a break in doesn't get any immediate response. So what's the use of remote monitoring?

YA, I was checking out some live cams in Canada, because I wanted to see the snowed in areas, and the wilderness, when, all of a sudden I clicked on a link, and Canada's website had peoples live stream videos of peoples in their homes, of which many people were walking around nude. Watch out people, this guy is telling you the truth, I witnessed it.

Most security cameras upload to the cloud. Perhaps search for end-to-end encryption. To be fair, some cloud functions are quite useful, e.g. prevent false alarms, detect faces.

Just a heads up everyone , some criminals are using wifi jammers when doing home invasions. This disables your cell phone , alarm system and cameras if wireless . In my case all my cameras are hard wired via cat6 , but I regret getting rid of my land line

If you use the guest network option on a home router, make sure the guest network doesn’t have a captive logon portal, because that would prevent the wireless devices from reconnecting.

I think we are past the “free Wi-Fi” days. I never connect to open Wi-Fi. And if someone asks to connect to my disabled guest Wi-Fi , I just let them on my 2nd router so I don’t need to keep changing my main password for my devices.

putting your cameras on a guest network DOES NOT mean it is on a separate network from your computers! Please do NOT mislead people. In many networking systems, vlan setup is needed and this may or may not be supported on regular routers provided by ISPs nor the APs. Perhaps you can talk about vlans to let more 'newbies' know what is needed etc.

I block internet to my cameras in my firewall and use my firewalls VPN to view my camera feed. Strong Wifi passwords and updated Router firmware is crucial to any security. Nothings fool proof, but you can make it harder for the bad guys if you use WiFi. Best bet is to go with the POE Cameras and run CAT Cable to avoid all the headaches that come with Wifi, as well as blocking them from internet access.

My cameras are my burglar alarm. I turn the 3 of them on when I leave the house and get a notification on my phone. When I get home I get notifications that someone is in the house which is a reminder to turn them off. I refuse to pay for cloud storage,so the videos are stored on micro SD cards in the cameras themselves. I can fetch the videos from the SD card to my phone. It is far less than perfect, but I know that it works. There is nothing special about the cameras. They cost about $25 a piece

First off, calling them security cameras are misleading! They are observation cameras and nothing else! There are very few criminals that have been apprehended via evidence of a observation camera! They could take off their mask and stare into the camera and still could not be identified! They can tell you when, and how but that's it!
