In today's hardware/software world...it appears the customer is used as a 2nd layer beta tester, and fixes are applied after complaints arise on forums and videos. If companies stopped sending beta models to their favorite "yes men" for testing,..things might be different. Great video as always Mike.

Definitely, i remember a facebook post a few months back from a Garrett tester who claimed the vortex beat the manticore on depth and i.d etc which i thought was suspect at that time , Garrett need to update this machine A.S.A.P , is this the reason their chosen youtubers werent allowed show the screen or let us hear the audio ?? Hopefully they get this sorted for those who pre ordered this thing , they could also do with changing those awful tones but thats just my humble opinion , cheers for the vid .

Good comparison video, thanks for putting it together. Air tests tell part of the story, which tells the user what numbers they _should_ see. I don't have a Vortex, but I do have a Legend and a Triple Score. I found on both Noktas that on some deeper targets, the VDI numbers can vary, sometimes widely, only to give a more accurate and steady reading as the soil is dug away. I find this more prevalent at salt water beaches, both wet and dry, (and not without some black sand mixed in), but also in parks as well.

This happens with every machine really. That's why it's really important for the makers to do a lot of serious testing to optimize everything as best as the technology will allow. Nokta did a lot of aftermarket work on the Legend and it turned out to be a great little machine. Garrett will hopefully do the same. You'll notice none of their sponsored users even use the APEX anywhere. This video shows why...they just don't have the SMS knowledge tuned in yet. Hopefully they'll get there.

Makes me question the testing over there at Garrett before their machines are released. Something like what you demonstrated should have been a pretty easy catch with the protocol they must have in testing their units for precision or repeatability. I’m sorta lost with what I’ve been seeing from this machine as to why some of this hasn’t been caught and corrected before its release.

In my opinion, the angle of the plug for the coil cable should be angled downwards - like the Equinox. And in the way it is now - it looks like a weak point and could lead to damage to the cable. What do you think?

@@IffySignals At least the Nokta has the block itself tilted, and the Vortex has the block itself tilted almost 90 degrees. For beaches this is not a problem, but for forests and bushes it looks a bit reckless. P.S. Yah, time will tell

A 20 point drop is a lot on a machine that only has three and 5 tone options. On 5 tone 20 points will drop you down to the next lower tone. So if you're digging everything not a problem. If you're sniping silver........problem. Your silver dropped from the highest tone to the second highest tone where more non-silver targets will probably also live. I wonder what the effect would be on rusty bottle caps or pull tabs. Will the frequency shift also lower them? Or will they go up? Stay the same?

I'm actually embarrassed for Garrett. They plugged and hyped the Vortex for months but looks like they missed the field testing out. It's actually a very poor sub standard offering, especially when you compare it to the Nokta Score range. I'd be firing the whole of the R&D and product development team if I was Vaughn Garrett. Charles would be turning in his grave with this crock of shit.

Starts doing it in freq shift 6. Even a bit on 5. So yes it does get worse as you get to 8.

I have a video up with the Triple Score. The Legend will act the same. Garrett has stated an update is coming shortly that will address the unmasking concerns as well as other things. Once this update comes I will show it again against the Legend. In case you did not see it the Triple Score did much better than the Vortex.

Thanks for the video Iffy. Can you please try the same Vortex test with a lower conductor like a nickel? I suspect the ID would still have a spread, but not as much as 20 digits. I also suspect that unlike the silver coin, the better ID on the nickel will be on channel 8. If true, it means the channel frequencies have an extraordinary frequency spread. If not true, then it means the Vortex has no ID frequency equalization.

Low and mid conductors are good. I tried a nickel and a small gold ring. IDs stay consistent.

It also does not seem to be a sliding ID scale on the silver with the freq change, channels 1-4 are ok. Channel 5 it starts to give a bit of the iron tone and mess with the ID, channel 6-8 its gets worse.

Really odd. Freq shift are usually only 1 khz difference just to avoid interference with other devices or detectors. It's Almost like on freq shift setting 8 you're getting wrap-around with the VDI or some other higher freq weighting the VDI down. I'm sure Garrett will release some kind of update soon.

The vdi scale on any detector is the very first thing that should be caught if it’s not operating correctly simply because its the first thing your eyes see when you scan a target. Even the least experienced testers should have caught that on the first day.

That is bizarre. It is the difference between digging something and not digging it. If, due to EMI you have to use channel 1 you may pass on a target that you would have dug had it been on channel 8. Did anyone really test this machine before they released it?

@@takeitonthechin3965 it kept right up with the 800 but I have not had it in a while and never ran it over the block tests. I really cannot confirm if it would beat the Vortex. It does have a high/low iron bias which would benefit it. Pretty sure it did not have a problem hitting the 10” nickel with the big coil but don’t quote me on that considering I cannot back it up.
