Everyone thought the availability of self service repair would bring change, but Apple still make some baffling decisions in terms of repairability. At least the digitizer is still separate and relatively easy to repair. That's probably the part that most people break most often.
@TheMonthlyJack
@TheMonthlyJack 2 жыл бұрын
The self service repair was designed to hold off the right to repair movement long enough so interdependent repair would die off. They will probably keep it around as something to point to when anyone questions them.

The iPad was brought back as the ‘school model’ and has always had a separate digitizer since then. Glad they haven’t gone back to the iPad Air 2 debacle with the digitizer bonded to the LCD (they were selling the Air to schools at that time).

USB C with Gen 1 Pencil is a deadline push. The new iPad had to come out, and it had to be quirky with its landscape front facing camera, so there was no way they could’ve possibly had time to figure out how to throw in Gen 2 connectivity.

You mean, the self-imposed deadline? No, sorry. This is not a hard engineering problem. This is a problem caused by setting a weird requirement for a camera placement and where the pen charges, ahead of more important things. Bear in mind this is the company that thought their first pencil design was good, and not an accident waiting to happen.

@@StarLightFilmProductions The other side of the iPad is used by the keyboard pins. I’m not sure what you’re trying to say with the second point - the pencil is already “full Bluetooth”, the problem is how to charge it. When I look up Samsung’s pen, it looks like they need to be connected via magnets to a specific location on the tablet to charge, which is what Apple did with Pencil 2.

3:49 Imagine your car tires being glued shut to your wheel axles. You are completely right - consumables should be easily replaceable to keep you going, not leave you stuck and incapacitated.
@hishnash
@hishnash 2 жыл бұрын
Im assuming you mean car wheel being not tier. Very few consumers have the equipment to correctly replace a car tire, we can swap out a spar wheel but the needed tools to properly replace a tier on a week and do it properly so that there is no dirt/grime etc in the seal is non trivial. In fact many tiers do use a form of glue like martial to bond/seal that needs some heat to remove. The last thing you want is any dirty making its way into that seal.
@em0_tion
@em0_tion 2 жыл бұрын
@@hishnash You' re correct. I was thinking of changing a flat or worn down bicycle tire for some reason. 🤔🤷‍♂ Wasn't really thinking about the technicality, just an example. Let's say sneakers (soles) glued down to our feet? 😂
@hishnash
@hishnash 2 жыл бұрын
@@em0_tion true while one would not glue to sneaker shues to your feet as you might want to change what you are wearing the soles on all sues made in the last 200+ years have been glued (and sometimes also sown). the use of glue has many functions but one of the most common is to ensure a seal to stop water, dust etc. Glue in most situations can be removed (like the glue used to seal the screen or battery in an iPad) but as a user case. I see many people wanting batteries to be screwed down but the nature of lithium batteries is that if you put a single point of pressure (such as a screw) into them when they expand they become spicy and start to smoke/burn, (and all of these batteries at some point expand). So gluing (with pull tabs) a battery on one side is the best option as this does not provide and localised compression points on the battery when it does expand (they all expand at some point). It is much better for the battery to gradually push open a device. Just think of how many of these devices will be forgotten at the bottom of peoples draws etc in 10 years time when the batteries start to swell. It is very important that when this happens the swelling can happen without starting a fire, by just gluing the back of the battery in when the battery expands there is uniform pressure across the battery and that pressure is low enough that the expansion can slowly pop of the screen (as the alternative is starting a fire).

@hishnash
@hishnash 2 жыл бұрын
Manufacturing cost and capacity. Building the cable and welding it to the board can be all done on an automated production like. Attaching a ribbon cable using a socket required manual labor this costs money but also right now is very limited (given the issues with supply chain). I expect right now given all of these devices are supply constrained based on manual labour not automated production like. if apple can 1/2 the amount of manual production time needed for each device they can ship 2x the number of units.

Agreed. Apple Pencil has it's place, and the Apple Pencil 2 is awesome-for those who use it. Far more prospective buyers will find themselves using the webcam for videoconferencing though. Reviewers seemed confused by this iPad, but lots of people will buy it who would never buy an Apple Pencil, and those people will thoroughly appreciate the camera placement and the USB C charging connector. Apple made this product with certain users in mind, and those users will really appreciate the design decisions, without even noticing the drawbacks (even the USB 2.0 speeds are a budget-meeting measure that won't affect most consumers).

production capacity. A soldered connector like this can be done on an automated production line. But connecting a fiddly ribbon cable required humans hands. Right now the main manufacturing constraint is labour, apple can easily buy all the parts they need and can have the automated production lines producing more stuff than they can sell but that final assembly line with humans is the bottleneck so I expect this was chosen as a way to save 30seconds of final assembly possibly increasing the total number of units they could sell by 10% or more.

Honestly so glad I bought the 9th gen iPad last year. I have so many lightning cables, the last thing I want is a USB C iPad that still has to connect to my Gen 1 Pencil. I do like the Pencil 2 design, and I just hope that all the positive press they got about the horizontal camera doesn't result in them ditching the magnetic pencil 2's design in favour of something like how this one works with the gen one pencil.

This man talks about USB-C more than why we couldn’t use our Apple Pencil 2nd Gen on this iPad.

Any experienced iPad technician will not complain about this design. In my opinion this is slightly better than repairing an iPad 5/6/7/8/9. Touch ID is on the power key which is very rarely damaged during screen removal. Still no face id to worry about. The digitizer is separate from the lcd. Your local third party repair shops will have no problem fixing screen/battery/ports and hopefully cameras for a reasonable price soon. Lets hope the battery, screen, and cameras will not produce non genuine parts message.

still would have been a lot better if they just do the keyboard connector at the back like the air but then again, y bother redesigning the base ipad if its gonna be the same as the air, so maybe just get the air. And besides, i think it is well established that the redesigned ipad 10th gen is for people who prioritizes getting work done using the keyboard trackpad combo and the landscape facing camera, not for full fledge artists relying on the gen 2 pencil support.

They could’ve put the camera on the opposite side(it would still be landscape). Then the 2nd gen pencil would mount with no problem. They simply did not want to..

As a repair professional I see usb c port issues way more then lightning port issues.

So much empty space at the bottom, and yet, only a singly USB connector, and no headphone jack. Think Different, I guess...

Yeah, I'm not having one of those. The Apple Pencils are expensive, and a tablet that sells for £500+ but uses a 2 year old processor, as first seen in the iPhone 12 series? You could have at least used the A15, in use with the iPhone 13 series and base 14 (non-Pro). This is like trying to cram the contents of a Surface Pro 7 in a new chassis (with a standard charging port) and calling it the Surface Pro 9. (Which thankfully, Microsoft hasn't done.)

I guess the removed home button to save money meant they didn’t have money to use magnets for the pencil?

I think it would be easier to make usb C gen 1 pencil. Just swap the connectors.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a charging port that has ever actually needed replacing, they’ve always just been dirty.

I hate that when it's an _Apple_ iPad, even a mundane, something-to-be-taken-for -granted feature like USB-C is touted as one of it's strengths while when other, less recognised phone manufacturers attempt a notchless front camera, they are endlessly criticised and shot down.

When a product is so bad to the point where USB-C support is its highlighted feature. Bravo, Apple 👏

With regards to the apple pencil, the reason is they have to differentiate products. The ipad is the low end of the ipad product line. Also, the amount of people that buy a base model ipad and an apple pencil can be counted on one hand.

Samsung managed to wirelessly charge the S pen on the back of the Tab S8. Not sure why Apple couldn’t do the same

Maybe because the iPad 10 is $449 while the Glaxy Tab S8 is $850
@Ninjimdo

@@FlorianWendelborn Doesn't matter, if they can produce an adaptor for the pen, they can add some magnets to the back of the iPad for charging a pen. Magnets are cheap, they already have produced the wireless charging for the other iPads, they just need to move the magnets from one position to another, the work has been done before.

The fact that it moved the camera makes me sad... I know I'm not the only user... but for me, a tablet doesn't replace a laptop... so I always used it portrait mode anyways... so moving the camera wasn't a good move for me... and it'd have allowed space for the pencil...

1:34 bud, they hire a team of engineers that get paid somewhere in the realm of 200-500k per person. If they wanted the cool pencil on their cheap device, they would have made it that way. There is a reason it is there. That reason is profit.
