I used to fly out of GAI and FDK, and more than once, while on an IFR flight plan, they vectored me directly over top of Dulles. I remember one time a hole in the clouds opening up, I looked down, and saw the Dulles runway environment right below me.

One thing I've found helpful is to do your homework ahead of time. With prior knowledge of what initial altitude I'll likely get, ForeFlight's notification of my cleared route ahead of time, and knowing which departure frequency I'll likely get, I can usually have everything ahead of time except the squawk code. A little planning makes clearances super easy and makes you sound like a pro.

Oh this video is perfect! I just started IFR a week and a half ago. Couldn’t find much out there for practicing CRAFT but luckily I picked it up quick. Even so, this scenario had a nice twist that I wasn’t prepared for as someone who flies out of a towered airport. Can’t wait for more IFR content.

These are great, PTAC is the most intimidating for me.
@1dullgeek Жыл бұрын
PTAC got a lot easier for me when I realized that I only have to remember (at most) two things from the ATC call: Turn and Altitude. Everything else I should already know (position and approach). And in some cases, if I'm direct to an IAF rather than on vectors to final the only thing I have to listen for is the altitude. So in the vectors to final case, ATC will say: "N12345 you are 5 miles from POSTN turn right heading 270, maintain 3000 until established, cleared ILS 5 into XYZ" I just need to remember 270 and 3000. So my response is: "270, 3000 until established, cleared ILS 5 XYZ" In the direct to a fix case, ATC might say: "N12345 you are 10 miles from POSTN, maintain 3000 until established, cleared RNAV 5 into XYZ" In that case I only need to remember 3000. So my response is: 3000 until established, cleared ILS 5 XYZ I've also found that rehearsing it outloud before I get the clearance helps. "Next thing I expect is the approach clearance. ATC is going to say something like 'N12345 you're 5 miles from POSTN, turn right heading 280, maintain 3000 until established, cleared ILS 5 into XYZ'. And I'm going to respond, '280, 3000 until established, cleared ILS 5 XYZ'" I do that at least once sometimes more if I screw it up. And that has helped me a lot.

So, this video is the best short explanation about how to communicate and take notes for IFR Clearance. I have just one question: “the phone number for uncontrolled airport was under WEATHER DATA SOURCE on Chart Supplement. Is it always on this section? Do you know where is it on CFS for Canada? Thank you so much for this amazing video
@flightinsight9111 Жыл бұрын
thanks. no that's a mistake, the arrow should be pointed further down where it reads "for CD contact..."
@GilbertoNovaes3 Жыл бұрын
@@flightinsight9111 so, CD should means Clearance Delivery right? Do you know where I find this same information on CFS for Canada publications?
@terrypedersen7 Жыл бұрын
In Canada it is the same number as WX Brief. Can get a briefing, file IFR or VFR and pick up a clearance from the same person. At some non-towered airports like the one I am at (CYXR) there is a remote controlled frequency for London where I pick it up over the radio usually instead.

Thank you for great video as always! More videos like this would be very useful. As a non native english speaker I find it always difficult to get clearances on (for now only in vatsim network). What are your tips/strategies for getting the spelling right of the waypoints and SID/STAR procedure names?
@ska04211 ай бұрын
Bit late for a response, but in case it helps someone: For departures, you should just have a look at the available instrument departures before you do the clearance call. Then you'll already kind of know what to expect. For waypoints, if you're unsure it's probably best to ask them to spell the waypoints out, if there is any possibility for confusion. Otherwise, just write them down as you heard them, and then if your readback is deemed correct, look the waypoints up in your FMS/Tablet/whatever you use as you enter the flight plan there. If there is any waypoint you can't find or that seems weird (presumably because you didn't spell it correctly) you can always radio back and ask for clarification before you taxi out and proceed.

As a new pilot, I'm starting to think that IFR in a small airplane is actually easier than VFR. No aerospace to worry about, no navigation, no altitude selection, just do what you're expected to do, go through the motions.
