1. Thank you for uploading it on youtube. Hope you can find a way to keep it free in the future. 2. The 4+ rule in the finals is crucial for exciting climbing performances. I have not heard of any coach, athlete or person involved in the sport who supports the rule change. So please, as the International Federation of Sport Climbing, represent and take care of the interests of athletes and climbing-addicted viewers! 3. Will there be co-commentating athletes again in the future? Their insights on the moves, climbing and training are very interesting and entertaining. I think many viewers enjoy and prefer these background talks over pure excitement-focused commentating on the moves.

It seems like so much has been lost with the new rule format. leads to so much desperation at the end of the four minutes and I feel this will lead to far fewer tops. It also is far less entertaining. One of the best highlights was Sean McColl, stuck at the top of the problem several minutes after the timer run out and eventually finally finishing the problem. There's still plenty of pressure not to come off the wall at the end of the four minutes but the new rule change seems to stifle a lot of the show

I really appreciate Charlie's approach, and I appreciate the experimentation of him going down to the floor. There were benefits, but overall, it ended up out of sync. I think the big challenge, still, is getting the camera actually looking at the interesting thing. Many many times there were interesting things happening, and we were watching people stand there. The replays often don't capture what is actually interesting about the attempt/send. Overall, good quality production that gets better every year.

I don't like the new 4 minute rule without being allow to finish the last attempt when time runs out. They probably did it to make it more TV compatible (easier to predict how long the competition will run), but it was much more fun to watch when the athletes didn't have to rush on their last attempts. Some of the most memorable moments happened when they were on their last attempt and put all their effort into it without worrying about time running out. I also don't like that they now don't give it another go when there're still a few seconds on the clock. Hopefully, the rule is going to be changed back next season.

The old rule was that athletes had four minutes plus they could finish their last attempt even if the clock ran out while they were on the wall. This was specific to the finals and made it more suspenseful and interesting overall, it is a minor change but makes no sense since most people prefer the old rule...
@Thragdain
@Thragdain 7 жыл бұрын
I think it's a pretty major change, previously they had as long as they wanted for their last attempt as long as they were on the wall before the clock hit 0. Which meant they could use the final however much time to rest up before that last go.

if we are expected to pay for this later, I expect camera direction to be top notch, not cutting to empty doors and replays when climbers are on the wall. I expect announcers to be understood in the language they are speaking, and that they don't constantly interrupt each other, which is very distracting as I try to enjoy the climbing. plus the fact that they didn't even superimpose a timer on the screen, they just filmed the actual timer, which backfired because their camera work was so shotty that some rounds didn't even have a timer on screen then the four minute rule, it's a joke. flat four minutes gives 0 room for creativity, which is half of climbing. it is disappointing to watch athletes walk off the stage with 30 seconds left, just because they know that even if the do the route perfectly, it will take longer than 30 seconds. really dumbs down the competition, and the athletes are suffering for it.

I appreciate your comment. It's important to understand that people, eventually consumers, will be waiting for something more when they start paying. The live streams have been a little bit of a mess and people have complained but i believe everybody was happy that, in the end, it's been pretty good entertainment for free. If we really have to start paying, I know I'll want something in return, something i didn't have with the free live streams. And I hope IFSC knows it too. As for the new 4 minutes flat rule... it's been said. It's very disappointing. I hope they take into account viewers opinion (as they did for the charge on this event. which I believe was a very thoughtful move on their part). stay polite in the comments people!

Dylan Mattingly Somebody finally said it. I don't think we'll be paying near-nfl season pass rates for high school level production... climbing needs so much exposure still, monetizing it is definitely a bad move. I think the 4 minute rule is to stabilize timings in airing so that olympic broadcasting can be set in stone instead of being wishy washy.
@NeverNotDylan

I didn't know the plan was to make us pay to view ? Well I think I won't. the formats are getting poorer and poorer, and making licensee pay again to watch the comps they're financing, while relying on almost exclusively volunteers to run the clubs and organise the comps themselves is poor form to say the least. I guess we are supposed to count ourselves lucky that we can comment youtube videos as all.

They should change the time format back and just do more replays when the climbers are resting up for that last big try. Never bothered me that much waiting for them to rest. I imagine most of us here climb and know how important rest is between tough bouldering attempts, whatever level you climb at.

I'm going to advocate again here for the 4+1 format. Climbers must be off the ground in less than four minutes; if they are, they have one additional minute max to complete the problem. This gives predictable times without forcing athletes to throw away up to 30 seconds at the end of their allotted time.
@ThePurpleAlien
@ThePurpleAlien 7 жыл бұрын
How do you still regularly fail to have the camera on the climber at critical moments? Why can't you split screen? Why do you film the audience when the climber is nearing the finish hold? Why do you have a commentator who barely speaks English gives one word answers when asked questions?
@PresterAdams

because its free and uses volunteers. your critic would be valid if they charged something to watch. right now you just watch people doing stuff in their free time which ofc isnt comparable to some other high production value sports like football or olympics

Is interesting to hear the climbers opinion about not wanting to win as a main goal but compete and feeling happy just to compete, but is very obvious that as in any other sport they want to win, wether is for prize, fame or personal goals, I feel the fact they look forward for acknowledge of their capacity as athletes, otherwise they will set challenges equally of even more difficult without the coverage and public view as many unknown athletes do and remain in the shadows. What I am trying to pinpoint is the actual goal to push oneself physically with the aim not only to succeed among well known competition but also get the collective understanding that they are or they have achieved certain goal, is there any way to remain unknown and train at the same intensity, I don't think you need sponsors to reach their level, simply time and dedication. I wish there was a way to re-take the same challenges they take but in any gym, with no cameras and no people cheering.

Hm the hard 4-min limit is jarring. I guess that was necessary for the Olympics to fit in the schedule better, as it effectively cuts down about a minute on every round of people on the boulders. And, you can do the final semi-final-style if you're pressed for time. Not a big fan, but it will probably feel more natural after a couple of contests. However, the routesetters have to learn a lot from this event. 3 Tops overall is ridiculous on the men. I feel like a lot of the bad feelings about the 4-minute rule came from the weird way the men's boulders were set and the result that many had to walk offstage just as they got to grips with the problems. Also, you won me last year as a loyal watcher. If this quality is gonna be hidden behind a pay wall, it has to be damn small, or the quality of the editing has to step up a lot.

Wth is this garbage? I haven't been following IFSC news about rule changes over the winter, I just logged in to watch this because I really enjoyed watching these competitions last year. These rule changes completely kill the competition, athletes are stressed out, there is no time for creative attempts or interacting with the crowd. The men's problems also suck. I understand that bouldering is moving further and further from climbing and the athletes keep getting stronger and stronger but tops are a big part of what makes this entertaining. Watching people barely hold a start, making 3 very rough moves to barely just control the bonus and fall off is not a lot of fun.

Wow. The camera team is actually sleeping sometimes. Missed two tops on mens 3. The replays are extremely short as well. It wouldn't bother me but considering that they wanted to charge ppl for that is ridiculous! Please reconsider that model and let the sport grow some more. It's not that the climbers don't deserve it but the production is not at the point to justify paying that much money. Give it another two to three years or charge 2€ instead of 20€...

The fact the crowd there are a bit subdued even when someone tops out speaks volumes. BTW, I love the IFSC's production, it would be spoiled if it were too slick.

What on earth is the point in this 4 minute nonsense? We're here to watch climbing, not a clock... If he's on the wall and making progress, that's the excitement, NOT watching a clock approach 0 and realising no matter how much further he's got than anyone else has, he has to stop and we miss the pleasure of seeing a problem solved. IFSC needs to leave their nose alone; their face just doesn't deserve this...

I really cannot get their understanding regarding the 4min flat rule. How can we justify asking a climber to get off the wall mid problem because they've run out of time. We don't stop swimmers mid swim, gymnasts mid routine, golfers mid put.... As shown in this competition we had competitors just try fling themselves at the bonus just to get a point and the organisers complain that's not what the competition is about... If that's the case go back to the old 4min plus rule. Very disappointed that it's been changed. It ruined the competition for me......

Looking for improvement on the format should be encouraged but this terrible 4min clock rule, poor route setting on this competition and the camerawork are hardly improvements. Good job on the climbers as always but very disappointing format that had a negative impact on the athletes as well. Is this what the level of the new production is like - it's no better than last season and that was pretty poor. £20 a month for a camera that doesn't have a proper clock on it and some sort of cutout is in the corner of the screen. Commentary is a bit lifeless as well. No athletic biographies or information. I'm sure they had this a few years ago and it was really useful to see how athletes had done in recent events - So why remove it ?

the commentators (and the organisators for that matter9 seem to focus too much on "climbers doing cool flashy moves and jumps", to "excite" the casual crowd instead of focussing on what actual fans of climbing wanna see. i dont mind some jumping or super athletic boulders, but not all of them -.-

I paid for the FloClimbing sub to watch this and its one of the worst things i've ever bought. The climbing "documentary" section has less than an hour of footage. The climbing "training" section has no climbing specific training, and you don't get access to the pro sections of the other sports they cover. Charging $20 for one sports channel that isnt 24/7 is insane.

this does not even remotely remind me of "climbing rocks"... this is more of a fusion between ninja warrior and gymnastics - but of course the contestants are very talented I started climbing back in '82 - back then, it was all about choosing the right route for you and climbing in good style - which meant: no falling, no hanging on pro, and most importantly, no whining and no looking desperate on the rock face but of course, time does not stand still - everything "evolves" - I just hope that those practicing these desperation moves don't land wrong and start tearing up their cartilege in their knees or breaking ankles or messing up the disks in their spine bouldering USED to be about doing 5.7 or 5.8 moves to get stronger and learn what you can and cant do on the rock

its actually not the competitors fault but the organizers to choose "cool looking jumpy athletic" boulders over "technical" ones ... i agree with you

Have you heard of the transgender ex-men and ex-boys in USA, Canada and Australia that were allowed to compete in the womens categories? they won everything. men are better athletes through their biology.

Climbing evens the playing field a bit because flexibility and technique are very important. As climbing becomes more popular with women, they're catching up to the men. I think it's separate because it allows both men and women to compete at the top level and they are given boulders that play to their strengths

Differences in strength and body weight distribution mean that men's problems tend towards powerful moves and women's rely on accurate placement and movement. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of overlap but not enough to make for a particularly hard set of problems for both genders.
