#5: DJI Phantom 2 - H3-3D Gimbal Installation Guide & Review

Hey man, big fan, I've learned a lot from your videos but i just wanna share my experience with the pins being installed the way you recommend. I had an unsuccessful first flight due to an unnoticed chip in a rotor blade after a minor crash. Once I put it back up, the Phantom 2 went up and over my head at a severe angle and before I could shut it down, it cracked off of a tree limb in my neighbors yard. Upon impact, all the momentum of the gimbal/camera moving forward stressed out the upper plate causing it to snap off in the front. When I found the Phantom, the plate was there with the two front holes/dampers missing, along with the rest of the gimbal and Hero 3+. It appears that if I had put them in the way DJI recommends, the back pin would have helped spread out that stress to the back of the plate as well and probably kept the gimbal attached. Granted it's a low probability of this happening and my crash was rare, but I've been without a gimbal and Hero 3+ since it snapped off and fell somewhere under 2 feet of snow in my neighbors yard lol. I'm impatiently waiting for the snow to melt since I've been unsuccessful in finding it up to this point. Just something I wanted to mention so others know that the plastic mounting plates aren't made of metal anymore. God knows flyaway induce panic and terror but add onto that the damage of a Quadcopter AND the loss of the gimbal/Hero; that's alot of money to be missing. Anyway, hope my experience gives others something to consider and please keep making great vids, they're all very informative and I learned a lot before i even started flying my own.

Mine doesn't have that USB ribbon cable that yours have. Mine connects to the camera through a special built in connector in the gimble that goes connected in the back of the gopro, no cables needed whatsoever...Probably mine was an upgraded version of it. Nice video...Thumbs up!

hi Thank you for the informative review/guide which has helped me greatly The removal of the connection to the charge feed the camera does have positive function. I have lost many micro SD cards costing many hundreds of dollars on equipment with no cover. Micro SD cards can spring out of receptacle at very inconvenient times also very difficult to find

I have nearly the exact same setup as you, DJI Phantom 2, H3-3D gimbal, and GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. Do you notice any buzzing sound or any sound at all while the gimbal is on? I've noticed a low operating sound, do you know if this is normal? Also, my gimbal tends to vibrate louder than normal when tilted at extreme positions, have you came across this problem? I also noticed how your GoPro remains level even when the gimbal is off, how did you manage to balance the GoPro so accurately? Any other recommendations regarding how you perfected your gimbal? Thanks a bunch for the excellent video iftibashir. If the Gopro was not being used for FPV and Gopro charging was being done via computer USB. Could the USB ribbon be taped to the back of the gimbal plate and not used? Seems like a fairly delicate item that will wear out after constant use. Cheers. Thanks again.

HEY, at 4:30, why do you tell us to install clear plastic pins in "diagonal" and then later tell us to move both pins up front? We just had to mount the bracket twice because of this. Other than that, great videos bro.

Strategic Aerial Photography The pins are DJI's method, so I wanted to show the 'official' way and then my recommendation. Good point raised though ;o)

iftibashir We use our setup for aerial videography. We found that by NOT limited the movement (as you show), we get the landing gear legs in the shot. Our preferred solution was to put both pins in the BACK. This prevents the camera from capturing the legs on fast turns. So in the end we installed the plate 3 times total (DJI way, both pins in front, then both pins in back). Fortunately DJI sells a package of pins which are not expensive and there are 10 pins and clips in the package.

If you look at 7:14 the gimbal can't touch the securing pin. The gimbal is programmed so that it can't touch it.

I ordered this gimbal after watching your video. However, the parts I received did not match your video and there was no power adapter that would even power the gimbal up so it was useless. I'm sending it back. Now, my original camera will not work. I'm having difficulty connecting to the Phantom WIFI, too. I've done the reset/power down and up routine but it keeps dying. What was a good, working drone is now basically worthless to me as I use it to film. Do you have ANY ideas on what I can do to save this thing? I would really like a three-axis gimbal for smooth shooting. Thanks, Jim

You should have contacted DJI and asked them for the missing part - it should come with everything in the video - although bear in mind the video is also 4 years or so old now!! Also note that the GoPro needs to be running an older firmware, since GoPro released an update which stopped the FPV feed!

Sorry I thought you meant side to side movement also. Tilt is controlled by a small lever on the rear of the controller.

Steen Pedersen It was never GoPro-Approved in the first instance. Nevertheless, it made for a much neater setup - not sure why they dropped that for a flimsy USB connector!
