It depends on how badly this affected your register but in principle maybe down by about one band, e.g. If you were an 8, you'd become a 6.

Can you offer guidance on how to determine which side to choose in a question in Paper 2 directed writing, and what's the best approach to structuring an answer when discussing both sides?

Sure! I discuss determining which side to choose in this video, where I unpick four past paper questions and how they give clues (or outright tell you) which side to argue. Go to minute 9:47 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4fKq31_osl_sNE In my experience, they usually want you to argue the more open-minded, environmentally friendly, optimistic side. E.g. of course they would argue that we can save the environment or that you should apologise if you make a mistake. If you really can't figure it out, then it's fine to alternate paragraphs for and against. Depends on how much you can write and how quickly, but two 'for' paragraphs and two 'against' paragraphs would probably cover it.

@@duabutt9011 No, you don't. So if it's very clear which side they want you to support, no need to be balanced. E.g. in the podcast one, the highest scoring responses just argued directly for why podcasts would benefit the business. They did mention the counterarguments, but then rebutted them straight after, which gave them explicit point +eval point.

What do I say in the introduction and conclusion in a letter?

It depends on who you are, who you're writing to and what the topic is. If it's to a friend, for example, let them know how you've been recently and why you're writing to them about this topic - why are they the person you've chosen? E.g. "You've always been so kind and given me such good advice, so I hope you might be able to help me figure out what to do next."
