No one believed the hype of the Dreamcast at the time. I was in grade 10 when the Dreamcast launched, and no one cared about it. Everyone was waiting for the PS2. Arcade games might be fun, but compared to what the PS and N64 had, it didn't matter. I mean, compare the content of WWE Royal Rumble to No Mercy or Wrestlemania 2000. People still played those games back then, and most didn't have internet speeds fast enough to take advantage of a console and a PC to go online. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but the Dreamcast was never going to succeed and just wasn't what North America wanted.

In a time when the market was dominated by Playstation and Nintendo, I was one of the lucky few in my country to get a Dreamcast. Little I knew that I was getting it in its latter days, at the end of 2000 I believe. Playstation was the console I wanted back then but I got the best one without even knowing it. I remember playing Sonic Shuffle, the unforgettable and gamechanger that was Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio in my country) and the astounding Soul Calibur. I literally grew up with these games, they are part of my late chilhood and early teenage years and I love every memory revolving around it. I remeber keeping my lovely Chao with me on my VMU with Chao Adventure 2 when my mom was giving birth to my younger brother. Having that little thing with me when I was at a hospital late at night, not knowing if I'll see my mom again or meet my brother, it was conforting. I could shake off my bad thoughts and just focus on the joy of carrying a "friend" with me all the time. And then my little brother learned to play at the age of 2 with Sonic Adventure 2, so now two generations of gamers in the family were born with this beauty. Dreamcast might have been a comercial failure. But it means the world to me when it comes to memories about a past I cherish so much

Its Sega Saturn that killed Sega in the console business. Imagine having no mainline sonic launch games even after the last years of the hardwares life cycle theres still no mainline sonic game. Some games are japan only, lack of sports games, lack of proper rpg games and lets not forget some of the ports on the sega saturn are worst compared to PS1. Examples are the port of Resident Evil 1 and Castlevania Symphony of the night. Despite both having more content compared to the PS1 version graphically their worst. To think the PS1 is both weaker than Sega Saturn and N64 but PS1 due to being easy to develop for and have full 3rd party support destroyed this 2.

@andraescott7470 yet that will not be sustainable for long. There aren't many kids today willing to play a Mario game over Roblox or Minecraft. Nintendo is surviving cause of its IPs and low budget cost into software and hardware. In addition, the major part people forget is Nintendo is third party in some ways. It's not just the consoles. They have games on mobile devices, make a killing off merchandise, display of characters at theme parks like disney, and other events. They also tapping into movies like Mario. If Nintendo was console only they would have died or have to keep up with Xbox and PS. Nintendo is fine for now Nintendo does get into trouble and quite clever when it comes to competition threats. Palworld for example, exposed and made Pokémon vulnerable. They easily won in court but now gamers are catching on to repetition. So Nintendo does have to make changes in the long run but they flaws can be easily forgettable.

IGN, PLEASE make more of these documentary-type videos. They're so interesting and a breath of fresh air. 7/10 JK we really do love these kinds of videos.

I always wondered if they were people who straight up quit gaming because Sega stopped making hardware.

For some, the Dreamcast never died. The last true gaming console. Now we have PCs in a box.

I like to think the OG Xbox was the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast.

What killed the Dreamcast? The Mega CD (Sega CD), the 32X, the Saturn, shunning EA, not having a DVD drive, and not being a Playstation. I'm amazed Nintendo is still around, the Gamecube wasn't much better than the Dreamcast.

The best selling console doesn’t mean it’s the best console. Real gamers know Sega Saturn and Dreamcast had better games. It’s generic news outlets like IGN who were bought out by Sony marketing dollars who were to blame for Sega downfall. Like you’re attempting now with this generic analysis which has some serious oversights of the situation. Also Sega are doing great now as a third party and don’t need this sort of negative spotlight for something that happened over 20 years ago.

funny think yes you are wright generic sega failed day of dead dreamcast videos ousisde of sega gamers but funny you sega guys also dont know what dreamcast failure means. evey sega guys knows half lfie 1 dreamcast port so when that not out its impact golden eye halo and kizzone like games a king on console. what you guys dont know there was more example like that. for example a survuvial horror game called Noctturne. when nocturne not out dreamcast slienh hill 2 become fame and resident evils become money making games even today. Nocturne was so ahaed of time it was better than unreal engine it look like ray tracing games today. there was a open world game called outcast when that not dreamast bascily gta 3 become first open world and make rockstar king. its much complex topic that dreamcast failure what resulted today gaming world.

The Dreamcast, as great as it was, just couldn't overcome the shadow of the Saturn.

Dreamcast was a great system. Shenmue should have been a company saver and system saver much like how Halo was for Xbox or how GTA 3 helped sell millions of PS2s. But unfortunately most Americans want games where you shoot and destroy everything in sight, rather than a game where you need to think. Shenmue should have absolutely saved Dreamcast, And one of the major factors along with Resident Evil Code Veronica as to why I wanted one and bought one. I still to this day have no clue how Shenmue flopped. Id still to this day play it on Dreamcast over any GTA to date. And I actually like GTA. I still play my Dreamcast.

Everybody who wanted the Dreamcast bought it on day one; and hardly anybody bought them after that.

No mention about how consumers were burned by the launches of the Mega-CD and the 32X? Or how the botched launch of the Sega Saturn also helped (it is mentioned that Sega mended relations with retailers, but it's not said exactly "why"). Oh IGN...

Sega launched too many add ons and made stupid decisions with Saturn that had already dented them badly. Imagine Dreamcast came a year earlier and they didn’t wasted their money on 32x or Sega CD. They could have nailed it with DC

The Gaming industry would be in a Much better place if Sega were still in hardware and Microsoft never got a foothold. Og Xbox and the first years of 360 were positive but there has been nothing since.

As someone who wasn't around during sega's hardware days, I would absolutely love another console. Sega has so many unique games besides sonic that are just simply amazing, but never got a fair chance because Sony didn't publish them. In a world where two of the three major console manufacturers don't make games, seeing sega's downfall is absolutely devastating.

The sega Saturn failed aswell because it didn't have a dedicated 3d processing chip and was very difficult to make 3d games, then sony showed the world ridge racer on the ps1 and that was it.
