@wavemaster48914 жыл бұрын
I love legacy characters and hate when things get redundant, by reducing them backwards. Prime example is Spiderman, I love the 90's cartoon, especially from the world building aspect. He was in college which allowed you to see him trying to maintain a job, keep tabs on his foes, save the world and try to keep a girlfriend. Any point of a episode could involve a college classmate bumping into Michael Morpheus, Craven the Hunter and Spider-man has to help (he could have even been in pursuit of said villainy when a classmate just happens to be nearby). Get back home after trying to deal with it, so he doesn't worry his Aunt May. Next day Job / college life, girlfriend issues, makes a discovery that will aid hi in catching yesterdays villain and suddenly SHIELD pops in to give Spiderman a warning about another thing etc... His life is constant and will continue to move on even if he dies. Meanwhile the high school reboots they love to make has de-aged Aunt May who has more interest in other things. Just so they can try to sell you on the idea that high schooler has the time to do everything. It had to have a plot convenience or the story fails already, that show is more episodic based and the world clearly lacks world building. The 90's cartoon doesn't need to have a excuse to give Spiderman, he is always on the go being a college kid and that would never trip any red flags. His world has *Weight* he regrets when he messes up tries to face his own inner demons, thinks about even quitting sometimes. But keeps coming back, you can't say that for the other shows. People have to be unafraid to let their characters age and mature. Become retired or even sideline characters to a new generation. I love every Young Justice season because it keeps showing the heroes moving up in their careers etc...

I'll be honest, Terry Mcginnis is my favorite Batman. Bruce is great, but its in his own words "If I go over that edge, I'll never come back." With that and none of the Robin's and Batgirl being willing to go as far as Bruce did, Terry is that middle ground while still being a torch bearer. Although the bat-family learned from him and went on to do what he would have never been able to done alone, but Terry was that single person who would do this "One-man Army" that Bruce started as the Batman, and that is the beautiful thing about the Terry-Bruce relationship, its a true 'pass of the torch' instead of any of Bruce's any other partners, witch were his pupils.

I remember when I first saw the trailers for this on TV, and thought it was just going to be another weird spinoff show were the whole gimmick is just making the protagonist younger, then doing nothing else of note and rehashing old ideas, and calling it a day. Afterall, it was during a time were all the studios were making "kids" versions of their most popular shows, and usually resulting in tired stories, poor characters, and nothing of note and just crapping on all the existing canon. But then I watched the show, and I could have not been more wrong about what Batman Beyond (or Batman of the Future as it was called here) was going to be like. It handled moving the storyline into the future and passing the torch absolutely beautifully (and is IMO the paragon everyone should follow when developing a similar concept), and they didn't just reuse old plotlines - they introduced new, interesting, cool and original villains and characters - that could stand well enough on their own without needing to lean on a legacy character to have gravitas and value. It was amazing, and Terry was a perfectly written and independent hero lead and not just a "teenage Bruce Wayne". And then when they finally DID choose to reuse actual older villains (infact THE VILLAIN) from classic Batman, Return of the Joker was one of the most mind-blowing and engrossing animated movies I had ever seen. I suppose at that age I had never really seen such dark and intriguing plotlines in a cartoon before (that flashback sequence still gives me chills, and the film paraded the differences between Bruce's Batman and Terry's Batman magnificently), and it helped cement the show as one of my favourite animated shows of all time.

@@CaesarSonOfMars People watching the show after watching this video are going to be confused when they see that scene. The way a show works is that only certain amounts of the story's information is revealed to the viewer or reader at a time. Once the viewer knows the whole story, the old information is then seen in a new light. If you introduce someone to Star Wars by telling them that Darth Vader is Luke's father, then you've just ruined a big moment in the trilogy. Don't rob new viewers of big moments, and they'll enjoy the show more.
