EPIC Games effectively killed the Unreal Tournament i.p. in order to chase trends which was a supremely dickish thing to pull even if it made more financial sense in the end. if unreal engine 5 can truly level the playing field between "indie" and AAA developers, then ideally the only differentiating factors between the two will be vision and storytelling (and writing and characters)
@henrycase37882 жыл бұрын
Yes, and no. There are still other notable factors in production tho. Triple-A studios have bigger access to mocap hardware and stunt people, experienced (voice) actors, bigger departments allow more diverse in-game assets to be produced, and experienced composers if music is an important part of the experience you want to deliver (which usually is). I'm sure there are other thing I've left out, but yeah. All that said, UE5 is still a big step that will certainly allow indie devs to go bigger with ease.

For the laymen who may not have gotten the gist of what UE5 offers, let's take the analogy of a mango smoothie stand; Imagine current games development as making a super silky mango smoothie using a bowl and a mortar. Yes you can make a mean smoothie out of that, but not only does it take longer, but you tire yourself out by the time you finish it. UE5 meanwhile is akin to using an electric blender, where while the smoothie that comes out may look and feel the same, it now took less time and effort to do, so you can better focus on making new and exciting flavors instead of crushing mangoes. That's the potential that UE5 is offering with its suite of tools.

It does scale with resolution. Epic themselves provide the use case of rendering a game at a lower resolution then using temporal upsampling (UE has its own FSR-like implementation) to achieve a higher resolution while only rendering Nanite geometry in that lower res pixel grid.

It cannot possibly be removed; the finished game contains the game engine. The UE5 SDK tools you show in the video are more akin to scaffolding. I'd say so. UE4 is already currently in use on film and TV sets, and can achieve photorealistic results in real time without needing to do an expensive path traced render. Possibly, but game devs need to change their design philosophies if they want to make games fun. A lot of the reasons most games fail these days is because everyone is copying the idea of gated content, repetitive content such as blowing up the same towns in Just Cause 3 over and over again or raiding the same orc castles in Shadow of War, and adding stuff nobody asks for such as microtransactions or RNG mechanics that make you feel like your time is always being wasted.

Biggest question unanswered IMO: what does it cost a developer to use unreal engine 5? What does epic typically take in exchange for a developer to use UE5?
@Mahdi.Kareem2 жыл бұрын
It takes 5% from the game revenue after the first 1 million in sales, so that means if your game sales doesn't reach 1 million it's basically free of charge for the developers.

This could possibly push the $70 AAA /AAAA game price. Dont complain about the $10 price bump and just appreciate the game improvements with the use of UE5.
