Why Batman's Arkham Series has one of Gaming's Greatest Combat Systems - Art of the Level

Somehow the Batman combat system in Arkham Asylum managed to be one of the greatest gaming has ever created, but if you look backward from August 24th, 2009, you will find a long list of bad Batman games in your rearview mirror. A series long-applauded in comics, TV, and movies was mired in mediocrity when it came to video games. Batman on Genesis was fine. Batman: The Rise of Sin Tzu looked pretty good for its time but offered little else. And let’s not even talk about Batman: Dark Tomorrow. Fun fact: we gave that game a 2.2 and it’s still not IGN’s worst-rated Batman game. There were a few gems here and there, but a lot of it was… not great.
Batman deserved better. Batman fans deserved better. And on August 25th, 2009, we didn’t just get a good Batman game. We got one of the greatest comic book games ever created up to that point. And some would say that even now. With great stealth mechanics, a grimy, well-realized world, and even most of the voice cast reprising their roles from the eminent animated series, Batman had finally arrived to the gaming space in a manner befitting the Dark Knight: seemingly out of nowhere. But the real standout in a game full of already fantastic high points was its combat systems and we’re going to talk about how the devs at Rocksteady Studios created one of gaming’s all-time great combat systems.
Sure, one of the major triumphs of Arkham Asylum was the return of the voice cast like Mark Hamill (Joker) and Bruce Timm (Batman/Bruce Wayne) from Batman: The Animated Series. But the combat system in Batman Arkham Asylum was such a large contributing factor to the success of the game that it was expanded upon but never replaced in future titles like Arkham City, Arkham Origins, and Arkham Knight.

I hadn't really played video games (aside from a couple things on Wii) in a long time when Arkham Asylum came out and I actually bought an Xbox 360 just to play it. It was like nothing I'd ever played before. It was both welcoming to someone like me who didn't have much action game experience at the time, but it was also challenging enough to feel really satisfying. I've probably played hundreds of action games since then, but the Arkham series remains one of my favorites, both because of the awesome combat and because it's the Batman game I think all of us had dreamed about for years. It's a great story too! I just got the remaster and it's still an amazing game all these years later!

Never understood why people thought this system was anything special it's literally a mash strike or other hits then when an enemy has a massive I'm going to hit you icon over them press the counter button in a like 2 second window and that's 99% of the combat. It's incredibly easy and offers no depth beyond recognizing a massively forgiving counter window that's hard to call a window when it's more like press it when you feel like it to never get hit button. It's about as braindead easy and linear as it gets basically press counter to win as it gets, when uncountable amounts of other action games offer so many more meaningful options and/or actually require some amount of mastery rather than as long as your not blackout drunk you can do it its amazing this is recognized as some standout compared to the slew of quality out there.

The combat is actually very deep than what you said. Sure you can just spam the punch button and occasionally press counter, but how about using different moves like stun, evade, special attack, throws, batarangs, batclaws, and ground takedowns? This is only from Arkham Asylum, which gets more expansive options in each game afterwards. That's the entire point of the combo system, where the higher your combo, and the unique moves you do, gives you more combo points. The game is supposed to make you stylish and feel like Batman. It's like people playing Devil May Cry where you can spam the sword attack button with nothing else. Sure you can do that, but it would be fun to do so my stylishly. Both games have style points in their combat, encouraging you to do even more than what you have to.

The cinematic final strikes are great. The game probably could have used some cinematic takedowns or strikes more often than just for the final hit. Kinda like Spiderman does. Beyond just environmental takedowns and tag takedowns that can only occur because of particular scenarios.

I don't know if it was but the Arkham Knight final Joker beatdown should have been made to last indefinitely. It should have been programmed to only end once you put him in the door frame of the chamber for the beatdown. But before you do you should have been able to beat him up indefinitely. I don't remember if you could or not. Could you. Or did he absolutely and irreversibly get put in the chamber doorframe after 2 or 3 hits? Seems like no one at all on KZbin has tried it. And it probably shouldn't have been so easy. A lil more competitive. Like have do at least a little more work to get Joker in that position to where you can beat him up all day. Have Joker fire his lapel and pull out a knife or a crowbar or something. Have him try to stuff you in the chamber or throw you over the rail. Something.

The dodge mechanic from Spider-Man 2 on the PS2 and original Xbox deserves some credit for inspiring Arkham's counter mechanic.

The Batman Arkham games were so awesome and fun to play and you felt like Batman with his Detective skills , combat , driving the batmobile , Detective crime solving and so on, you really felt like the Worlds greatest Detective 🙂. Rocksteady captured the feel and atmosphere of Batman and they have changed the Superhero game genre forever and how to make an awesome Superhero game .

there's many games that tried to replicate arkham combat. but other's look like the enemy attack one by one while others just watch. in arkham games, the enemy looks like they swarms attack and work together but they gave batman fast movement animation to get the sense that batman is way faster than the enemy

@@MrPhilipIrving1 yup, shattered dimensions, edge of time, and the 2 tasm games is what i remember at the top of my head. But think more clearly on what i said. The arkham trilogy brought out the true POTENTIAL for AAA superhero games... Spider-Man ps4 simply put more gasoline into that fire. Now look at where were at right now. Were getting the literal sequel of Spider-Man ps4, a Wolverine game, a suicide squad game, a Wonder Woman game, a Captain America and Black Panther game, a "rumored" Black Panther game, a freaking Iron Man game, and it's been only 4 years ago that Spider-Man ps4 released in 2018 and we got this much announced so that means there's more to come within the incoming future. Get the picture... were literally in some sort of Golden Age for Marvel and DC games *RISING* within the playing feild upon this new generation. The previous Spider-Man games, and especially Spider-Man 2, were the beginning... but necessarily didn't brought out that true potential. *Arkham did.*

@@Bungycb *inspiration* brother... Spider-Man ps4 was the inspiration from Arkham too. I give credit where credit is due to Spider-Man 2, but even that necessarily didn't brought the true potential for an AAA superhero game. Just brought the foundation of gameplay for Spider-Man gameplay.

I love the free flow combat but my issue with it and most games like it is that it feels automated As for the games I liked Asylum and Knight the best. Knight for me is a tad more enjoyable actually tries to add something to movement outside gliding and the grappling hook. Even pre Arkham games had Batwing and Batmobile segments to try and spice up combat. Not being able to control the Batwing and Batmobile is a nitpick I had with post Asylum games till Knight
