An update on our thoughts on this product (August 16th, 2022): When we originally purchased this and had filled it up twice, we had assumed the tank had sprung a leak. When I removed the hose I was hearing a slight hiss. We took it back to where we bought it, and they reimbursed us. We purchased another one, and we realized that the hose was just holding excess propane and creating the hiss from the hose rather than the tank. (D'OH) This thing has been fantastic for us, and I would definitely recommend it. The carrying case and stove adapter hose are great, and you don't have to mess with regulators at all.

Hi. I’m interested in knowing how often do you have to refill the tank? Using your math I’m guessing every 7-8 trips?

In the 3 years I’ve had it, I think I’ve filled it up twice maybe 3 times. We don’t use a lot of propane, really just for cooking. Depends on what you’re using it for

Just got and love it! Yeah I could saved on something on the internet but I got it at rei cuz they are great about returns if I'm unsatisfied, and I get 14 bucks back on a dividend. I really shopped around and would have had to buy a hose and find a case and pay shipping. I'm really happy I got this and have no regrets. I'm sick of the green bottles too. Thanks for the video! Oh yeah , the case is great.

One potential benefit I can see about the case is that when using propane the exterior of the bottles frost up. I am thinking that the bag keeps the moist air away from the bottle and eliminates the condensation problem?

Just returning to re-look at this growler. It really is a cool item. I've been researching ultra light gas fire pits to go with it.

Been thinking the same thing. Was a huge bummer not being able to have something to sit around last year during the fire bans! Not necessarily worried about the heat but it's nice to have a common space when we're out with friends.

@@ScaleofTwo What I found from my research is that most portable propane fire pits are 18 - 24 inches across and weigh up to 25 pounds. That's too big and heavy for overlanding. The best one for overlanding I've found is only 15 pounds and 11.25 inches across. There is a link to it in the description of my last video if you are interested. Cheers !

Just bought mine at rei yesterday… worked as expected . I bought the deluxe black 1.5gln. My only regret was buying before realizing there’s a bigger 2.5 gln tank

The Growler is just a relabeled Flame King propane bottle with door trim around the edges and a much higher price tag. The carrying case is nice as they sell it separately for $55 which is a rip off.

I hear ya. It is definitely a pricey piece of gear. I would say the value is in their accessories that come with it. The hose that is regulated for stoves (could buy separately), and the carrying case. I wanted both of those things anyway, so we bought the full package. Agreed that this setup could be achieved at a cheaper price!

I don't like the white color case too. The case should be black with orange straps to match the orange and black Fire Can. Confused 😕.

Are these types of propane tanks (we call it LPG here in Australia) not easily available in the USA? The small disposable ones I've seen in heaps of videos from the USA, I've never even seen here. Mind you, I also haven't looked for them because firstly, I'd didn't previously know such a thing existed, but also, I try to avoid disposable stuff. The 9kg (almost 20lb) tanks are ubiquitous around here. I got two smaller tanks (2kg-4.4lb, and a 1.25kg-2.75lb) for my camping so I can easily carry a spare. All of the sizes are readily available from almost any camping shop.

Yes, the 20 lb tanks are often used in the US, lots of places will charge you one time for the "bottle" fee, and you can go and exchange them anywhere for a full tank. The 5lb tanks aren't very common in the US though, and we just don't have near enough room to put a 20 lb tank in the Prius. Once we get our next overlanding vehicle we'll probably figure out how to mount it on the back of the car somehow and be able to use a larger tank. The disposable ones are a pretty big problem, because you literally cannot refill them. They just end up in the landfill. It's certainly convenient, but not worth the waste in my opinion!

Weird! I haven’t had this issue. I’ve just filled it at any gas station that offers propane.

It's been about 10 months. How has the Gas Growler been holding up all this time?

I talked about this in one of latest gear vids, but the tank actually sprung a leak after having it filled the second time. I’m not sure if it was how the person filling the propane at the gas station handled it or if it was a faulty unit, but they were out of stock everywhere until just recently. So we’ve purchased a new one (about two weeks ago), and I’m happy with it. Really the thing you’re paying for here is the hose adapter and carrying case, which are really nice. The return process was very easy after the other one had a leak, so that was definitely a plus!

So just finding out about this... Considering the cost why is this better than say a 5# Flameking bottle for 1/3 the price other than the padded case?

Probably the only other benefit is it comes with the hose for the stove, but yep. You’re not wrong. I addressed this in the video :)

Our valve actually broke about a month into using it, not sure if that was our fault or the product. Ended up have to return it, and we just haven’t replaced it yet. Something to keep in mind!
