Thanks for taking the time to put this video together (and for the shout-out)! This was really informative, especially to someone who is on a similar KZbin journey to yours. Always enjoy your videos, keep 'em coming! Also, I agree with you that there aren't enough people making videos in this niche ... and that is ESPECIALLY true when it comes to the Pacific Northwest.

I will say there cannot be enough PNW camping content. Anyone who seeks out this kind of content is ALWAYS starving for more content. Truly, the more the merrier. And I think it serves us content creators well to collaborate and just get involved in the local camping/overlanding community. We all have a ton in common, and everyone we've met has been amazing. I would also suggest people don't go into this with the intent of quitting their day job. It will take years of hard work and extraordinary luck to ever get to that point. Do it because you love it, and enjoy the journey. Thanks for sharing!
@ScaleofTwo2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I also think it takes approaching it with the correct mindset. If your absolute goal is to make KZbin a business, treat it that way. For us, it’s a hybrid. I want to make money to sustain the lifestyle I desire, but I also never want to compromise on my “morals.” The reality of making money and living today is multiple revenue streams are the way to success. KZbin could become obsolete at any point in time, relying on one platform isn’t wise in my opinion. So building something that isn’t so specific to one platform is advantageous. Something I didn’t address that I would have liked to in the video is our ideal work situation. We run a design business, but the big goal for this channel is to have it cover some expenses so we can truly take on the work we REALLY want to do with our design. (Obviously coupled with the other things I mentioned) I rambled, but your point spurred me on to write all of that 😆
@VegaVenturing2 жыл бұрын
@@ScaleofTwo You're definitely taking the right approach! If you go all in on a single revenue stream, if/when that changes, you're screwed. I have a co-worker who has over 1.4 million followers across two social media channels. This person is killing it, and makes huge money with sponsored posts. And they still have a day job to provide their medical benefits and basic needs. Everyone's path is different. One of the things I love most about KZbin is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. It's whatever you make of it, and whatever you want to create. I love that, especially coming from an industry where clients definitely want things done a certain way. But again, I love your approach. You're doing what you love and working towards a goal that I have no doubt you guys will achieve. Great work, and we're big fans of the channel!
@OverlandPNW2 жыл бұрын
Great topic. I've heard a lot of people say sponsorships are the way for smaller channels to make some meaningful income. The problem is that smaller channels aren't where commercial sponsors want to invest. So, unless you have an altruistic sponsor that really likes your channel, it is difficult. So if any altruistic sponsors are reading this....Winston and I need sponsors ha ha! For me, I've passed on a couple of brand ambassador arrangements that would have generated income in the low thousands simply because I didn't want my channel to become a QVC for pushing products. Like you, I really like the creative outlet the channel provides. I've been doing videos and still photography for years just for the fun of it. A little income is nice to defer some of the costs. I like the idea of an online store and will look into that in the future. Again, great topic!
@ScaleofTwo2 жыл бұрын
Lol, the overland QVC. That could be a fun channel 😆 I agree though, pushing products isn’t why we’re making these videos. Though, if it is a product we believe in and they want to sponsor the channel, we’re happy to do that! I lost my job in 2020 due to covid layoffs, and we realized that we wanted a life away from the corporate world. It’s tough to break away from, but I think as long as you’re genuine and creating for the right reasons, the livelihood will come. I’d much rather be creating videos along with items that bring joy to the people that enjoy our videos than giving time to a large corporation that couldn’t care less about us as people. It’s a long road, but one I think is absolutely worth investing in. I really appreciate your approach to all of this and I know that we’ll get there sooner than later.

I started with a gun channel back when guns were still acceptable on youtube. Once guns became evil I transitioned over to the camping niche. Luckily alot of the same types of people who like guns also like camping so it was an easy transition for me personally. As for overlanding? I camped in a 2wd Hyundai Tucson and a tent. Then tried all the other options. roof top tents, trucks, vans, trailers ect. Still dont have a "RIG" so to speak just a 4x4 truck with nothing on it yet. I think the secret to financial success is consistency. Post weekly. Post interesting content. Helpful content. outdoor camping/exploring vids. product vids. event/expo vids. That mix should make you a nice paycheck. So far it has worked for me lol. Need more money? Search out paid sponsorships and sell stuff. Need even more money....get hired by one of the big companies you meet at the expos. Get paid to camp and get free stuff! A dream come true!!!!!

No doubt! I also think it's a pretty delicate balance of becoming a commercial channel. And I think everyone's opinion is different on that, and that's okay! We started this channel for fun, and realized we really enjoyed it. It has now turned into more of a long term investment to support ourselves doing something we truly enjoy. I'm very open to sponsorships and collaborations, it's just gotta be with the right people / companies
