The older style Bosch stick coils are the best with the metal shield. They fire under load without fail. BMW has gone to Eldor since all the problems with the newer Bosch and Delphi. Eldor seems to be the reliable route for now. Eldor is used in Rolls Royce engines which speak for the quality.

In this particular example, could not just the rubber insulating boot be replaced since it clearly had the defect? I imagine the coil likely could still be operating correctly, but the spark was exiting through the defect in the boot instead of down to the plug. I could not really make out any discoloration in the boot around defect though in the video to support this possibility. It makes more sense in my mind to repair the part with a new boot at a fraction of the cost of a complete coil if that is the failure. It was $5 for a boot vs $60 for the coil on my Volvo. Maybe that is not possible with the coils on these vehicles. I don't know. I'm just researching frequent failures and repair/maintenance on these cars because I am considering a purchase next year. Regardless, an easy fix without specialized tools and the car is running correctly again, and that was the point of the video so well done.
@fcpeuro6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the spark plug connector (boot) is not a serviceable item on this style ignition coil for BMW's. In this case due to the damage on the connector it is required to replace the entire coil. The most common failure for ignition coils is the coil itself failing. Discoloration of the insulation is not always an indicator of an issue. Generally speaking a misfire due to an insulation problem is almost always a tear or hole in the rubber boot.

I’m subscribed. I need the diagnostic tips, the easier the better. I have an owner of a 2001 Land Rover Discovery, the vehicle will crank but not start. I asked the owner if the tach needle moves while attempting to start and he said “no”. I suspect the crank position sensor. The owner had someone else look at the vehicle and a scan tool was connected. That revealed an ignition coil to possibly be bad. I’m going to the owner’s house Thursday to check both of the possible problems. A wiring schematic I obtained does not show which of the three wires from the connector are what. I noticed upon looking at a connector for that ignition coil there was a red, a black, and a blue wire. I would reckon the red is for the power, black is for the ground, and blue is for the signal to the computer. I want to properly diagnose the coil with my multimeter and I want to check the proper terminals that the connector plugs into. What do you reckon? Also, I attempted a spark test but after testing three of the eight spark plugs I wasn’t getting a spark at all. To me that didn’t seem right.

Hey so I replace the spark plug on cylinder 1 after giving me a misfire and even changed the coil less in October 2022 and now it's making my car stop and go into neutral until the car FINALLY comes to a stop and it makes clanking noise on the back tires and I hate turn on the engine again but i noticed it happens when I come to a stop and sign or light intersection and when it's time to accelerate to go that's when the engine turns off and goes into neutral as nd steering wheel gets hard and starts make the car to come to a stop but is put into Neutral and makes a loud clanking noise on the rear ties until it comes to a complete stop. I already went to AutoZone to get it checked for codes and no codes other than the ambient sensor but I already replaced it and my ac don't work cause I don't have the money to fix and my son who just 14 months old and I can't afford to be without our car since we are currently fleeing from my abusive ex boyfriend to keep my son safe and give him a better life which he deserves it and I feel overwhelmed and defeated to that things are not coming out right or what I hoped it would be better because we are in a DV shelter but this Domestic Women's shelter is ok with providing a roof but only for a month only until I find a place and money to get away and start a new life with my son but now my son just got diagnosed with a delay in his motor skills and communication skills and now he's developing symptoms of an autistic child but they are not saying we need to wait until he turns 3 to diagnose him and give him the treatment or help he needs to treat autism. He's 14 months already and he's still doesn't walk. I'm beyond grateful for FINALLY having my child away from our previous violent and abusive home and now we can sleep comfortably but we still have some traumatic episodes at nights but we go to sleep knowing we are safe and that's all I want for my son to be happy and enjoying his time as a child but with all these new set backs I sometimes feel like I can't do it on my own raising him with no money and no job and no luck in getting any job offers. Sorry fo telling y'all my Lifetime sad story but I just had to let it out and tell someone so I can remind myself to not go back to the abusive relationship because I feel like I can't do it or find a way out to my struggles in being a single homeless mother with her 14 months old son. I've replaced 2 on my '07 Altima in the last year. I was stoked! I don't know much at all about working on engines. Both times my check engine light came on (though even if it didn't it was quite clear something was wrong) so I had it diagnosed at an auto parts store where they told me exactly what the issue was. Could a coil go bad and not set off the check engine light? Also, does a coil gradually go bad or do they simply either work or not?
@fcpeuro4 жыл бұрын
Typically a bad coil will cause a misfire and set the check engine light off, depending on how modern the car is. Coils typically age to the point where they no longer work, however you can have a failing coil that will cause intermittent misfires.

Start with the obvious things like checking ignition coil fuse, and move on from there. How do you know its not getting power, assuming you tested with a multi meter for power at the connector with key on? Would not suspect the issue to be ignition coil related. Ignition coils will cause misfires and rarely will ever cause a vehicle to stop running. Without further info it's hard to say for sure what the problem is but seeing that the truck turns off like a switch is being flipped it sounds like an ignition switch issue which is pretty common on B2200's.

My car went in safe mode also wont change gear faul and i change the coils and erase then woks fine , is that is normal ????

you need to scan you OBD2 port to understand what module is acting up or what sensor is bad! Transmission in "Limp Mode" is a serious issue to prevent more damages.

won't that change firing order for those two cylinders

No he moved coil one to the number two and two to one, but did not move spark plug wires which would of changed the firing order

@@rajanbrar6561 there cool over plug, so the charge is the same, coil over plug can be placed over any plug and will be the same, but defect will show up where defective coil moves to, same can be done with a wire or plug

An iCarsoft scanner was used.

buy yourself a FULL BUS scanner for $50 more... you will have access to all the car 30+ modules! Dont buy a limited "check engine light" ("4 systems") scanner or you'll miss the whole picture. The OBD2 CAN-BUS was developed by Bosch, everyone else was forced to join the wagon

It would be better to disconnect the injector associated with the specific cylinder in question as disconnecting the ignition coil pack cuts all combustion in that cylinder sending more raw gas downstream that isn't particularly good for the catalyst.
@arnolduk1235 жыл бұрын
I would of thought modern later 2000 upwards vehicles with engine management would detect a major misfire/bad coil in a cylinder and automatically shut off the affected injector. The cats costs $$$$'s and to not have a fail safe system in place to protect them from such a small component failing would not be a smart design idea.

@@arnolduk123 these car are built to eat parts, everything goes: rims, cats, coils, intake manifolds. The home mechanic understands that 1 coil being bad announces the others going the same way
@arnolduk1235 жыл бұрын
@@glasser2819 A bad coil does not mean all others are going to follow. The injector could be at fault causing misfueling in the cylinder or a breakdown of one of the spark plugs. So replacing all coils would not fix the issue which would eventually reappear. Although at major service intervals it would be wise to renew all coils and plugs.
When an ignition coil fails completely, isn't the injector automatically shutoff for that cylinder by the ECU DME module ? I would of thought there was some fail safe mode built into the engine managment to prevent the injector firing unburnt fuel into that cylinder. In particular a 2004 BMW E46 I have a dud coil and worried about any unburnt fuel that could upset the pussy that lives in my exhaust :).

by now you may have noticed German cars just eat parts... If you melted catalitic converter, the secondary down_stream O2 sensor will set a CEL Code!
