I've had what I and many with me thought was a MAP-sensor problem (not looking at the car). The car, a Volvo s70 -99, had trouble with idling, black smoke, hard to drive at low revs and smelling horrible from unburned fuel. When I went down to my daughter and open the hood of her Volvo I heard a windy noise (sucking of air) from something. I started looking in to it and found out that it was in fact the tube from the MAP-sensor to the intake manifold that was busted. Both the hard white plastic tube and one of the rubber ends was cracked. I cut of the plastic tube an inch and bought a rubber tube that was a tight fit over the plastic one to ensure no leaks. Now the car is working like a charm again.
@SchrodingersBox9 жыл бұрын
Per-Erik Gustafsson This is a common cause of MAP failure on engines where the sensor is not directly attached to the intake. One case I had the hose was very soft and would pinch closed causing false MAP readings.

@acetech92379 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, I really appreciate the message your getting out there to the concerned automotive technicians, as well as the automotive consumer. One of the most annoying things I hear from uneducated "parts changers" and uneducated consumers is quote " Oh fixing cars is simple with that scanner, you just plug it in and it tells you what the problem is". That's hands down the most ignorant and annoying comment to hear people make, because the consumer thinks they're getting ripped off, when they hear this crap, and the "parts changers" go through their careers never knowing the other 98% of the functions the scanners have to offer, pending your scanner of course. They don't realize, those codes have to be analyzed by an educated technician, and evaluated for accurate diagnosis. I like that your not afraid to tell people the truth as well as critique peoples grammar. I am annoyed by improper grammar as well, like "DIFFECTIVE" in your other video, clearly spelled DEFECTIVE. Apparently they think the red wavy lines under their words is the computer telling them COOL WORD SPELLING. Some people never change.

I recently changed out my upper and lower intake manifold in my Buick Park Av. 1999 with the 3.8L base model. I replace a lot parts since I was at 172,000 miles. New spark plugs, fuel pressure regulator and fuel injectors. I was going to reuse the MAP sensor till it fell apart in two pieces. I bought a new one at the auto parts store. The car seemed to run fine right away. Although climbing the hill, exactly at one spot where the grade increases the engine would sputter and gasp. I could gas it a little and get out of the sputter mode. I figured it was the MAP sensor. I watched your video and used my Digital Fluke meter with the new MAP sensor and the old MAP sensor which I stuck together with some Red RTV. The MAP sensor worked the best with the old Delco MAP sensor. I took the new sensor back to the Auto Parts store and explained the problem with the Fluke meter test. They asked what code I got and I said, "I don't have any engine codes." You can watch my video of the MAP sensors I had with the old and new one. They didn't watch my video but I upgraded to the next MAP sensor for another $17.00 around $60 total for the new one. Thanks for your help.

Matt, I greatly appreciate your in-depth analysis of the various issues that can preclude proper functioning of the various sensor systems of which are, as you pointed out to me today, very much a systemic balance. This retired school teacher thought all he needed to do is simply replace the TPS on his beloved 1989 Dodge Caravan 3.0 with 355k miles on it and simply keep on moving on and probably do what 98% of the population does and do the replace it and forget it deal with the remaining sensors, etc. I do have access to a basic voltmeter and I intend to do some investigating. However, after 355k miles I bet it's not a bad idea to remove and clean the entire throttle body, for starters. Thanks Again! Dean Jackson

Hey Matt, I am a service adviser and love to learn about cars. Not only for personal interest but for my work as well. I just want to leave a comment and thank you for such detailed and well explained videos. It really helps me to improve in my career and in my personal achievements as well. I am new to your channel but will be exploring it probably on a daily basis. Keep up the great work and have a nice day!

Thanks man! Its funny I did this channel for DIY's but probably half my subscribership is professionals in the field. They are the best viewers too because their comments are really informative. I think most people learn more from the comments than the videos!

Yes I can- pay attention to the material. Quit letting yourself be distracted. If you want to learn to diagnose instead of guessing at parts to change you need to FOCUS on the material presented.

Thanks Irish! If a thirst for understanding is desired, then this channel is Gatorade! I would say have your mentoring mechanic see my channel but what if he sees your comment lol?? Besides, I have a feeling that you will soon be a mentoring mechanic anyway and probably be more effective than he or even myself for that matter.

I have a MAP only sensor, it took a little while to suss (after looking and not finding) that I don't need a MAF sensor, one less sensor to worry about hooray!. My Idle pressure is 4 psi I can see from my diagnostic module, the pressure rises with engine revs and drops down just bellow 4 psi level, before rising to the idle pressure again, as you have shown. All great stuff, building up my knowledge and understanding of a closed loop engine management system. Thanks for your well explained videos my friend. (Car info; 1.6 Mitsubishi Lancer Equippe 2006)

I have to say that your videos are pretty good. I'm a new car owner (got my first car 6 months ago) and got a pretty nice car (VW Gol G5 2011 1.6L 4cyl 8v, Brazilian origin car) with an engine built a few months before I bought it (Car was stolen years ago, then it appeared without engine so it got written off, bought by my uncle and rebuilt the car). Engine is in pretty good shape altogether and had 300km by that time, about 6000km right now. But it started giving me a few problems in the past weeks. Car is feeling sluggish, it would have trouble gaining speed over 3000rpm and is not going over 3500/4000 depending on the gear, I got up to 135km/h with ease some months ago, now it's struggling to reach 105km/h. Besides a clear one that was the Ignition coil, which was originally bought as used and got repaired by my uncle, it failed me last monday and started misfiring. Not an issue, got a new one and it keeps going. Did the usual checks as checking the air filter, replaced it since it was quite dirty but did nothing to solve the overall problem, just a bit more responsiveness to the car. Car doesn't have MAF sensor, just a MAP sensor, readings are decent or at least seems reasonable. O2 sensor reads as it expected, 0.45 when engine is off, then fluctuates between 0.1v and 0.7v which seems also good. I haven't tackled down on the fuel system yet, which might as well try since LTFT at the moment is -12.4% and STFT is regularly showing negative at idle. As expected it goes positive when loading the engine but values seems low for me. Just by that readings I started by diagnosing for any air intake restrictions (just to be safe) with no success (as was quite expected). I might need to go around the fuel system, just yesterday I watched a video of yours about an EVAP diagnose from a P0441 which is a the only code the car ever showed in a few occasions, and start tackling down from there up to fuel injectors and end up through the fuel pressure regulator. Hope the issue goes this way as I don't really want to deal with a catalytic converter problem here where the only way to get one for this car is from the dealership directly. Up to this point I'm in need to say that car has shown no other code than P0441, there's no exhaust smoke from any kind, engine sounds good, it runs good up until the threshold it starts losing power and rate of acceleration. It does seems like a weird problem even to my father who, despite being an electrician and not a "mechanic", has been around for a while in this and knows a thing or two. I have to say again that you explaining how the systems works, for people like me that had no mechanical background nor closeness to the field, is so valuable and I do not just enjoy watching your videos, it's actually quite fun to go to my car and begin tackling down issues. Sorryfor the big letter 😅

You guys are great. This kind of video opens people's mind. Some of my mechanics are killing me. I have changed my MAP sensors like three times because my car isn't slow-running well. I nearly threw the car away...
@SchrodingersBox9 жыл бұрын
Yes I have seen many a MAP changed for no reason other than people don't understand it. At a higher level of understanding, sensors can actually help tell you what is wrong instead of being blamed for what's wrong. You far more often use them as tools instead of using tools to replace them.

Great videos. I have a 89 Silverado TBI K1500. I've owned it now for about 15 years and love the truck. Lately its been running rough, especially during idle. Before I found your videos, I've been throwing parts at this thing at an alarming rate with little luck. I've changed the intake manifold gasket, distributor assembly, plugs, wires, IAC valve, TBI kit. Just throwing parts at it hoping something sticks. I'll be watching all your videos hoping I can learn and figure something out.

My truck idles fine. Acceleration normal when idling. But when in gear, loss of acceleration, sputter-like and hesitation engaging any gear once the "loss" occurs. Felt like fuel pump being decisively tempermental... But we know it won't run EFI without it. OBD scanner says intake problem (once decoded). Any advice helpful. Glad to make a donation... Very refreshing channel and savvy fact based content! 2% here lol. Impressed!!

Hello Mr. Schrodingers, All I can say is WOW... I was looking for something and I found you and you did a great job on explaining everything in detail. Thank you for explaining and being the kind of person you are. My wife's 2009 Colorado has a intermittent chug problem at low speeds and take off. I took it to O'Reilly's and used there Bosch scan tool and it is saying MAP sensor is bad. But I wanted to test it before replacing it, and that is how I found you... Her truck has 5 wires going to it and I do not have a wiring diagram to tell me what is what?? More internet investigation on wiring.. God Bless you Brother... Doc.
@SchrodingersBox9 жыл бұрын
+shafferjoe1962 Good job man. BTW no scan tool will say any sensor is bad- it will just say the reading is out of a specified range or there is a detected circuitry problem. But it will never say a sensor is actually "bad"

Great video!!! Just came here from props you received on Eric and Ivan's twisted cam video. Side note on vacuum. My first car ('64 Rambler) that had vacuum powered windshield wipers. Anyone who ever drove a car with vacuum powered windshield wipers on hilly roads in the rain knows from experience how manifold pressure varies with throttle position. Go up the hill at full throttle and the wipers would swipe maybe once every four or five seconds. Once you crest the hill and start coasting down the other side of the hill the wipers were slapping back and forth so fast that they were practically ready to fly off of the car. Chris

Watching the video I'm thinking: I like this guys personality... Reading the comments in thinking: lol he's a Savage! Trying to internet troubleshoot for a buddy of mine with a 08 Challenger. His car cut off the other night and apparently won't start the codes the computer is throwing is the typical p0171 and p0174. He states that when he was checking things out he realize that his k&n intake filter had come off the intake pipe so along with the codes and the air filter being off I'm leaning more towards it being a MAP/MAF sensor issue. No access to the car so I can't do any voltage reading and I'm pretty sure if I asked him it will go over his head, even if I sent him this video lol... If you got any comments I'd appreciate it but I realize that's not much data to go off of. Either way, good day to you sir and thanks for the lesson.

What data do you have the simple P0171 and 4 so what is your fuel trim data curved against load showing? ALways start with the basic fundamentals like that on lean codes- always!!!

This is the first video I have seen of yours and I believe you are probably the best man to ask a question about my 2005 Chevy Colorado L4 2.8 liter.First thing the timing chain broke while I was driving, surprisingly the valves weren't damaged . But now the thing is having all kinds of problems starting. It cranks fine but when it starts it is all gas. I mean I turn the key and the idle is all the way up as if I'm stomping the gas but of course I won't even have my foot near the pedal. The idle does go down when I press the gas pedal then chokes out. Man it is like the gas pedal is somehow controlling the air and not the gas. Yiu know what I'm saying..
