its true, but even then you should be careful with independent news. they often get caught up either with or against mainstream opinion, and it is easy to get worked up and stay worked up about things. i try and keep abreast of whats going on without getting too caught up emotionally. its not a mentally healthy way to live

Some people enjoy movies/TV shows, some people enjoy sports, and I enjoy news/politics. Honestly, as long as you have a mix of corporate right/left and independent right/left, you typically can interpret what the truth is without a lot of issues

@@BlueMarten On the Conservative side, the Daily Wire and Breitbart are pretty good. On the Left, Jacobin is good one (though they are VERY socialist). Also, Substack is a great place to find independent journalists. A good one on there is Glenn Greenwald. He's definitely on the left, but he's a more reasonable leftist I like Tim Pool for more of the Center stuff. You know he really in a centrist given that the Left calls him Right-Wing and the Right calls him Left-Wing, though he is probably more right leaning than left leaning. He actually founded The Intercept, which is a very left "news" place, but left because it got too woke.

I generally prefer to either read my news or listen to the radio. As a rule, the less sensationalized, the better. If "news" is full of clickbait, aggressive, or flashy titles, then chances are that it's actually entertainment. Also, since when does Big Head Kid have kids?

I like watching political stuff. ( It's like one third of my KZbin feed if that tells you anything. ) And I'm not ashamed of picking a side or a stance on something. You have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything. I can't look away when I know that people are calling evil good and calling good evil. I must know what is happening so I can fight back either now or in the future somehow. This earth and this country may be temporary, but for all we know we might need it for the next couple hundred years, so we mustn't give up hope that we can still save what good is left and maybe make things a little better as well. However, I understand if paying attention to such things isn't for everyone...

So ... I work at a news paper ... I live in Germany and we have tax paid news, which are not dependent on advertising, and hundreds of small news companies. Our company does not belong to a huge cooperation. Anyway, what I am saying is: Yes, we do write our headlines so that you are more likely to click them. Yes, we do need either your clicks for advertising or your money in a monthly subscription. But in general, we are just trying to get the news out to you guys, write about interesting topics and provide you with useful information. My coworkers aren’t bad people and they definitely don’t write lies or exaggerations to get your attention (there’s an ethics code for journalists in Germany, which they oblige themselves to). So news bashing bothers me. And this video is news bashing, sorry. Maybe American news deserve it, I don’t know, but my company certainly doesn’t.

Ive never really watched the news. It makes my depression worse. All of my news comes from my dad calling calling me up and sharing the things he thinks its important for me to know. Which us usually consists of "theres a new restaurant opening up a mile away!" Or "did you hear about the firemen that saved a family of kittens from a burning barn and then adopted all of them?" The only time he shares dark news is if like... A kid has gone missing and theres an amber alert. Makes my life much more peaceful

It's true that there are a lot of biased reporting out there but I think the answer to that is not to stop watching the news but instead to develop a critical eye to evaluate what's fact and what's opinion. I'm a journalist and while (in my experience) it is true that corporate interests impact how news are written, there's also a large incentive to tell important real stories in a way that helps people. Unless you're at the very top, it's not a very lucrative career path and I've personally never met a journalist who was in it for the money or who didn't believe in the solidarity aspect of the profession. I know you guys didn't mean this as an attack on journalists but I feel like it's still an important reflexion to make just in case.

The biggest, most influencial news channels in my country are 100% funded by taxpayer money. There's no profit in them, no clickbaiting, no ads. I agree with a lot of this message. However, I've watched some people take this too far and descend to believing every conspiracy they find on Facebook. Not watching hours of cable news is probably for the best, but I think as citizens we have some duty to stay informed from as reputable sources as possible. These will inevitably have some funding source (corporate or government) which biases their takes on issues, but if you make sure to get varied sources of news with different biases (ideally get something from government of another nation in the mix) you can probably pick up on the major events going on.

Well, I guess it’s a good thing I switched to libertarian. Even then I don’t enjoy politics from the libertarian party. If you want the news, either from Christian, Republican, Democrat, or libertarian, you have to watch with the knowledge that not all news are true. Some are and some aren’t. You’ll figure it out eventually which is which. I remember a story about a Chinese person asking American person why we still watch the news and believe it because all news always have an agenda and controlled by the government. That’s saying a lot that even a Chinese person saw the American news and couldn’t tell the difference between his and ours news.

I switched to the Associated Press for my news long ago. If you are a stubborn sonuvagun like me and won't disconnect entirely for your own reasons, relying on a non-profit employee-owned news bureau that does all of its own primary journalism is the most socially responsible way to actually stay informed I would strongly recommend people stick to more local stuff in general though. Support your local paper!
