MamaBear Jones As a fellow professional model, I’m willing to bet she’s worked w/ photographers who aren’t great at direction before so she knows how to take over a shoot and get them good shots. I’ve definitely been there done that. Or I’ve gotten vague directions like “this is the set. It’s your space. You’re comfortable it in... just like use the space” or “ think about something like icecream” Omg! The model part started and I just realIzed I know that model haha!

a model's a model. she was good model cuz even without communication, she didnt pull any confused or awkward facial expressions and just trusted you guys that you knew what you guys were doing cuz the shots still looked absolutely amazing. Like what she's pretty
@ricebag226 жыл бұрын
To be fair, you can't trust the vast majority of models to be that autonomous or be that aware of what makes a good shot. In fact, you can't really trust most people in any industry to behave that autonomously. She did a great job hiding the fact that she had no idea what was going on and just tried her best to make a great product. I'd hire her for pretty much anything if that's the same attitude she brings to every situation. Most of the models that I've worked with didn't really bring anything to the table--they would just stand there without any expression and wait for someone to tell them to do something. Finding the ones that want to share some creative expression with the team is a Godsend.
@minidensetsu24476 жыл бұрын
naw but they were probably friendly with her when their NOT taking the photos and they became comfortable with each other but the concept in this video was just that she wouldnt give her any directions. In the model's mind, she probably just thought 'I'll try my best to look good'

personally, i think the shots were better when jess weren't talking to the model. I understand their point with communication. but in jess side, the uncommunicated shots have better colors, have better raw feel, and in one way, it seems as if you can connect to the model better from the perspective of viewer.. but what do i know. so in the sense of what you were saying, i think the reason why for me the uncommunicated shots looks better is the difference in experience. The model knows what looks good with her, while the photographer only just knows what they want to achieve. ---

I definitely understand wanting to show people that the art is created not just by the model but also by the photographer, whom we don't really notice most of the time, but eek. The way they were talking about the model as if she needed guidance and she was 'on the boat by herself in the middle of the ocean' was so demeaning. She seemed to compose herself well but I got the sense that she was also irked by the suggestion that she wouldn't know what to do if she weren't being directed. She was so chill and laidback like yeah sure it's efficient but I can handle myself and I'm a piece of art. Paulina really is a great model!
@Liz-dl9tu6 жыл бұрын
Cara V but it’s important for the photographer to direct the model. Sometimes they want a specific kind of vibe from the model, so its good to direct them to make the pose or the expression the way they want it to be...
@WildVee4 жыл бұрын
I kind of disagree. They didn't really mean anything in a demeaning way though, when Jess said the model was on a boat in the middle of the ocean, she meant more like, the model is on their own when the photographer doesn't communicate. She didn't mean to imply the model ever did a bad job or that she can't do her job without being directed. The whole point of the video was to show that, yes, a models job is to model and they can absolutely kill it, but the photographers job isn't just to shoot a photo, it's to create an art scene, so directing a model can have a whole new and different impact on the photo, because *he* knows what he has in mind, the model doesn't. To achieve that, communicating with the model is important. That's the whole point.
@Stuckinthebooks4 жыл бұрын
I mean I’ve been on both sides of it. I think the work balance between both photographer and model is critical for many photoshoots. People usually have a sense of direction and aesthetic that they want to go for during these shoots and you can’t exactly do your job as a model if you don’t know what’s wanted of you. It’s like if I was handed a spider in a photo shoot and told to pose and then it turns out they needed a different expression or hand positioning, different body composition, you’re both working together to get the shot. I can pose by myself and still look good but I can’t pin the nail on the head of the photographers image if I’m not guided to also see what they need. Same as it is just as important for a photographer to speak up, a lot of times they’re very vague and say nearly nothing about what they need or want but still want the perfect shot lol.

Don't know if it was because the model was super good, but actually the photos with no talking are not drastically inferior to the ones where you directed her. But I think it is all about the experience and for sure being able to talk makes a ton of difference if the model is not a pro.

People’s minds work in different ways, man. Some people are not very good at naming exact feelings, but they can describe situations like as if they were describing a movie scene and narrated the person into the mood rather than naming the emotion directly (like he did). I worked with photographers for whom English is not their native language, and it’s actually quite common, because they lack exact vocabulary but use descriptive narrative as a crutch to get the ambiance they’re after.

I feel like non directing photography can be fair to the model to just be themselves and feel comfortable to do any poses they want because honestly you'll prolly come across some great natural poses without directing any for the model.... some models have insecurities, they don't feel confident being in front of the camera ... don't be a dush photographer and say, " if you feel insecure why book a photoshoot , or say your wasting my time. " cheer them up, help them let go of that fear , hype them up... if your going to be a photographer with a shy model .. atleast help them build they're confidence and inspire them with your kindness and love

I love Polaroids and the nostalgia of them, how they wash out yet highlight the face and immediate objects in the foreground and blacken or blur the background. But I grew up with Polaroids and disposable cameras so that might have a lot to do with it.

LoL... his shot's turned out better when the model was just doing her thing (she's good/very professional)... his directive sucked. Same with her.. when the model did her own thing.. 3 out of 4 of the shots were good, then with directive, there was only 1 good one out of 4 shots. Definitely did not expect that voice from the model though...
@RKyle-wx6rp6 жыл бұрын
J.A.M I agree. My favorite shot was when the model picked a flower & was holding it while looking at the camera. Gorgeous. (Lower right corner photo at 10:35) She was a wonderful model. (and yes, her voice surprised me too!!) For us photographers who do not work with professional models (family photographer here), this was a good reminder to communicate! :D

Polaroids, I personally think they aren’t for taking professional pictures. I honestly use them to just take pictures of things I wanna decorate in my room and make memories- not as taking photos of a model. I think polaroids are cute and fun, but not exactly for professional photography and yea, so the camera won! Overall, Well done! ( I am not a professional this is just my opinion 😂)
@wolfgangk13 жыл бұрын
They are if you know what you're doing. A GOOD photographer can make anything work. Polaroids have been successfully used since their conception.

Excellent lesson. I modeled only once and didn't like it because the photographer didn't tell me what I should do. As an amateur it made me super self conscious and I never did it again. Props to the model here though, when she grabbed the flower pedal you could tell this ain't her first rodeo lol

It’s actually funny because Jess did use one hand gesture in the beginning of the no direction portion. It must’ve been so hard just shutting off your muscle memory. I would’ve needed to remind myself not to direct with my hands over and over again.

I loved the aesthetic and style the first one was taken in (no talking) but the angles were much better as well as the focus in the ones with communication. Either way, loved both.
@betsymartinez37734 жыл бұрын
I think all of Jessica’s photos were great and I think it’s because the model was getting the hang of it and played different roles to see what the photographers liked. Jess has very expressive face and you can tell when she liked something she photographed the model fed from that.
