Well they just assume it's immaterial because information exists and they can't fathom the entire system of sense datum to reasoning being material. That's all it is. It's entirely possible that photons cause chemicals in your brain to react a certain way that causes other reactions we call reasoning but even entertaining it ruins the necessity of neph's claim. Isn't that the standard for religious folks? Just today I stumbled upon a guy who claimed that if we accept people's synesthesia on their word alone we should accept personal testimony as well. But the best part was that in his comments someone challenged him with personal testimony of different religions. Well just answering the first part of your question. We'd have like different justifications to support different sorts of things we're conceiving without having proof. The imaginary for instance would be some form of thing that's a combination of things we know about that we have zero support for existing at all. The theoretical would be something like imaginary but supported with reason like a line of things that exist that one could infer another thing in that line also existing. The example would be like the idea of transitional fossils between two forms that we don't have yet. We don't know it exists but we have reason to believe it does. The immaterial is the real problem here. Nobody ever explains what it means and we have no ability to conceive immaterial things because to exist is to have properties and we don't have any examples of things that have immaterial properties in the real world. There's nothing to map onto at all. It's something defined by what it's not making it entirely uninformative.
