From an environmental standpoint I can see why the government would want to ban another animal just like yellow anacondas, but their are so many people that are irresponsible pet owners and release invasive animals into the ecosystem because they are bored or cannot support them, which has caused such a big environmental issue. To ban them completely is a bit harsh. The use of strict laws in proper housing, permits for how many animals a person has at one time, or for pet trade or conservation. Treat them as a high risk animal to own, and if you cannot do the following correctly you shouldn't own them at all. It's not the animals fault, they just want to live and survive. It's the Human part that messes everything up.

Create jobs where it’s a full time trapper to remove all the invasive species for one I think it would help, and I don’t believe they should be ban, but I do believe there should be a law where if you want a type of iguana, tegu, etc then you should need a permanent and wherever you purchase one of those reptiles, FWC should know that you own that exact animal and needs to be microchipped in your name. Definitely need to be careful about the slippery slope on this one, and the horse is solidly out of the barn. The other side of the story is that Green Iguanas are one of the most abused animals in the hobby. Almost no one who purchases a Green Iguana is capable or willing to properly care for a six foot lizard. The industry has a very dark underbelly. Think about all of the Reticulated Pythons, and Burmese pythons who's owners have absolutely no intention of caring for a 15+ foot snake. Think abut all of the sulcatas, who's owners will never be able to care for full grown animals. Granted, people don't purchase these animals with the intent to abuse them, but by and large that is what happens. Do these animals have basic rights? Should they be regulated? I think that the industry is short on self regulation. That can only have one outcome. Cheers, Chris
@Velcraft4 жыл бұрын
Agree on that these bans are currently the only way to ensure that the pet trade stops selling animals that end up harming the owners, the environment, and the animals themselves. No market somewhere means less production in the long run. We need retailers to take responsibility and ensure that future owners are getting their pets because they want to take care of them at least adequately, not just because they saw a juvenile at a window or a friends place, and thought it looked awesome. Stop selling for looks, start selling for positive results - for all parties involved.
@thebubster03124 жыл бұрын
@@Velcraft well said mate and hi from the Uk. The problem primarily is instilling a sense of responsibility into potential animal owners, you can't drive a car without showing competence and an incompetent driver can kill. Here in the UK pitbulls are a banned dog breed due to little gangsta shitheads using them as weapons and status symbols. In reality a well cared for and trained pitty is a beautiful dog, I used to own a bullmastiff pitbull cross so I'm speaking from first hand experience. The humans need regulation not the animals.
@Velcraft4 жыл бұрын
@@thebubster0312 exactly my mindset as well. Most of the nordic countries (hi right back from freezing Finland) have really strict regulation for animals and plants in commercial use, but no ban is absolute, and if you can show you're passionate and well-educated enough, you can usually get a permit or keep your existing banned pet as long as they live (some parrots are a great example of hard-to-rehome banned pets here). Some animals aren't meant to be kept as widespread pets, and the responsible owners can show the rest why they are problematic, and why you should consider long before getting any life that you as the owner are responsible for, until either of you dies. Over here, we can't release animals into the wild because of the harsh conditions, but that means every one released into the wild to "have a better life" is sentenced to an agonising death, which is even more cruel to the animals. Only thing we can do is try to convince the people around us to change their view of keeping pets, and every responsible keeper more means even more people consider responsibility as the best practise. Thanks for being awesome!

@@Velcraft Yes we are singing from the same hymn sheet here. Animals don't end up in a human environment on their own and responsibility has to be on the owner. It’s important to note that the proposed bill is only banning green iguanas and the Argentine black and white tegu. Other species of iguanas and tegus can still be bred, purchased and sold. Also, people who currently own green iguanas or black and white tegus can keep their animals. Unfortunately, uneducated and ignorant owners ruined it for everyone else. Same thing happened with red eared sliders in 2007, Burmese pythons a few years ago, pit bulls in Miami-Dade county in 1989, etc. The best way to combat this is educating people before they buy these animals. People need to know what they’re getting into when they buy that 6 inch $20 iguana at Petco or that cute, quarter sized sulcata tortoise hatchling at the pet shop. Also, language was added to the bill that would allow for the capture of wild invasive species in Florida to be sold out of state. Research, research, research!! This is a difficult issue and the bill is much more than a blanket ban on iguanas.

Hopefully the "ban" will end in getting a license first, as we have in my country (to be allowed to keep venomous and large lizards I had to take a course and get my license). This keeps people from buying difficult species on a whim, but the hobby has also kinda collapsed and the government has no clue about reptile keeping, so you get really odd regulations. Though, is it the same as with the pythons in Florida (escaping during storms) with the iguanas?

Also they pose an actual problem to our infrastructure. As you know florida and water control is a big deal. They dig around locks and dams. Also expedite erosion along canal systems as well. But again, mainly pest problems. Their impact on infrastructure is minimal so far. It is interesting though. They seem to be really well established in populated areas. When I'm in WMAs or STAs I never see them. It probably has to do with their vegetation of choice.

Banning these species is a step in the right direction in order to preserve what is left of Florida’s natural ecology. Swim in a spring here and see thousands of invasive suckermouth catfish (plecos) introduced by the pet trade, pythons in the glades once again from the pet trade. The issues our native species face is more important than your wants and I’m glad scientist are behind this legislature. All of the potential issues you discussed are human issues. I’m a huge fan of the channel by the way, just have to disagree with you on this one. Cheers!

Not sure a ban is really the proper response maybe put a bounty on them

@Eric Pope there's a difference between a truck and a gun. I will let you think about those differences because I can't be asked to point then out.
@jhu7684 жыл бұрын
@Eric Pope I'm not even American and have no idea what the constitution actually is just that Americans mention it alot. But it's much easier to defend against a truck than a man with a gun, much easier.
@jhu7684 жыл бұрын
@Eric Pope what of course you can, you ever seen those barricades they put up everywhere due to truck attacks??? They're everywhere, even basic concrete ones you must of seen
@jhu7684 жыл бұрын
@Eric Pope well it's clear they didn't have them then isn't it, or if they did they were ineffectively used. I'm not arguing against having guns I'm against how easy it is to get hold of them.

Welcome to the racing pigeon world guys who have owned racing pigeons and take care of them in the best was meet the rules paid for permits just to have the township or city come and take them away it’s a shame I feel for Ty and the other guys in Florida.

It would be a great idea that they collect all the iguanas from breeders and send them back to their native habitats like Mexico and Central America where their numbers are getting low. 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t know anything but I hope they don’t let all this creatures die 😩

I understand why they are outlawing iguanas as pets because in most cases in captivity they seem not to thrive will. If you compare most in captivity and the ones in the wild the difference is outrageous. So in the long run this is a good thing but right now it's really bad. They should have went about it a bit differently.
@Precizn74 жыл бұрын
Huh? They outlaw iguanas to discourage from people releasing it and populating even more. I dont think this has anything to do with thriving in captivity vs the wild lol

Why isn’t the government this concerned over Burmese Pythons? Such tone deaf stupidity. You can do better, Florida

Ok, they say they are invasive BUT who says a lot of other animals weren't that way many years ago. Like horses for instance.. they say native American ppl didn't have them until the Spanish came and brought them. My take is they are here.. deal with it! It's not fair to punish a whole bunch of people that weren't responsible for obviously letting them go long ago. I don't agree with any of this!! I lived in Florida purchased my very first green iguana way back in 90 and by the way the nicest, coolest lizard ever! But when I moved back to Tennessee he came with me. I really thought about moving back to Florida someday soon but iguanas aren't the biggest obstacles it's the fact Cali is literally bussing homeless ppl across the country to Fl. A bunch of lizards aren't going to harm you, but ppl yes they will! So the Gov down there needs to back off the reptile kingdom and seriously look at the human kingdom if they want to fix an issue. Iguanas are all over the islands and people still live there and go there. Ice already sent letters and I'll be sending more!

What's next on the ban list? pythons and boas?
@CoolGobyFish4 жыл бұрын

In this time of mass extinction i think its important to increase biodiversity where ever possible. Regardless if its native or not. Everything was invasive at one point in its evolutionary history. I believe iguanas can fill a niche in floridas ecosystems.
@radwigs4 жыл бұрын
Great, once it kills off all the natural species that are in competition for food and shelter a new balance can be established. Awesome plan.
