Not an easy job to cover SD with the subtle local harmonies, complex instrumental harmonics, and outstanding sound production quality. Dear Aja. It was 1977 and I was 16 years old. I remember it like it was 10 minutes ago; the raw shock of the needle entering the vinyl of Steely Dan's Aja and hearing the extraordinary first bars of Black Cow for the first time. It was like the first time I had ever really been kissed by music. Its ageless. Congratulations to you guys for the really devoted, soulful and perfect renditions of the SD songs youve put on youtube so far. My 21-year-old daughter thinks you are super cool.

So good. I'm always struck by how the most difficult thing to replicate is Fagen's voice. I always think "sung low" but then I try and sing his stuff and my voice constantly cracks from hitting those complex high notes.

The "I.G.Y." of the title refers to the "International Geophysical Year", an event that ran from July 1957 to December 1958.The I.G.Y. was an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world's scientists. Fagen's lyric discusses the widespread optimistic vision of the future at that time, including futuristic concepts such as solar-powered cities, a transatlantic tunnel, permanent space stations, and spandex jackets. The song references the vision of postwar optimism in America and the Western world. The "76" referred to in the song is 1976, the U.S. Bicentennial year.
