As an artist I know hours, weeks, even months were spent to make a painting that everyone says, "I thought it was a photograph". Still, when SD was getting $700 for lawn places and $1,000 + for row seats, a cover band like this has some justification.
@airbloomamplifiers2 жыл бұрын
@@gmonet46 No justification needed. Obvious good reasons to replicate good music. The opportunity cost of perfecting a recreation of existing music is a consideration for me. I never learned how to play famous guitar solos after the internet (I started playing in 1963) because when thousands of posts of perfectly replicated music exist there is no reason for me to waste my time. Shouldn't be a surprise. Fagen, both solo and as part of Steely Dan, would require endless takes and retakes and months to record an album. I believe these guys had, what? two days of rehearsal? That says an awful lot to me....

This album by Donald Fagan, called The NIghtfly, is one of very best ever made in the history of pop music. It is right there with Sargeant Pepper and Blonde on Blonde.

Way better than any Beatles tunes.. IMO.
@thephilosopherofculture45594 жыл бұрын
@@dieterd3119 I certainly agree. Perhaps with the exception of a few tunes on Sargeant Pepper, McCarthney's songs are for simpletons, that is why he has been knighted and sold millions. I think it will be like the poet Longfellow who was considered to be the best poet ever in the mid 1900's. He was paid $80.000 in today's money for one poem by a newspaper and sold hundreds of thousands of books. Today, nobody reads him any more and is considered unreadable, boring and bad. Another example is the poem by Schiller who published in 1798 Das Lied von der Glocke. ALL GERMANS and Dutch people had to learn this 465 line poem about a bell clock by heart from 1800 till 1945. It was sold in schoolbook format and in the most fancy books thinkable. I know for I inherited that shit. I tried to get through it, just to see what it was, but it is impossible. It has a special effect, though, it nauseates me physically, exactly like the Paul McCarthney's shit. How I have suffered from having to listen a milli9on times ot Yesterday (hailed as the best song ever) and Mull of Kintyre. Lord, redeem us from his shit.

@@dieterd3119 Yes, of course. I hate find his slimeball music so disgusting ("I want to hold you hand" jeez, give me a break), that it has started me on the path of diving into psychology and social phenomena to figure out how the heck he could have millions of women screaming for him. And get a medal from the Queen, by the way. The answers I found but they are not interesting or nice to women. I now find a similar situation with Donald Trump. Two beautiful women, former models, swoon with Trump for all the wrong reasons.

Absolutely authentic cover of the original masterpiece. God this band is amazing, I'd love to see them live the whole set is one of the best performances of one of the best albums ever. The bassist is very important to the sound. I'm disappointed some find it necessary to make picky comments. I've listened to this up against the original and the final performance on KZbin video Night Music #111 which has the most stellar array of session players assembled in one room including Donald F and producer Tommy Lipuma. As ever Donald doesn't go for exact covers in his live performances and all players are just feeling it. IMO this performance is of the similar standard to the other live performance and a proper live version of the studio recording. I'd love be to know if there are any other comparable live versions of IGY on KZbin but suspect not. This is extremely difficult to play live, way above what most excellent performers could do as it requires not only great execution but precise arrangement. I assume those who thumbed down came by accident or get perverse pleasure in being negative or just don't like the song in which case they should just FO back to where they came from and don't say anything. Massive respect to you guys, I am in awe of your efforts and talent.

Three different albums from the 80s: The Nightfly, Toto IV and Christopher Cross. What do they all have in common, besides being massive hits? All three are masterfully engineered and brilliantly arranged. But what makes Fagen more special is that he managed to pull off the engineering and arrangement front consistently. This level of brilliance started with Katy Lied and hit its zenith with Aja, but of course, there are no "flies" on Nightfly, Gaucho, Two Against Nature, Everything Must Go, and of course all of the subsequent Fagen solo projects Donald, keep holding on to that Slinky Thing! I'd love to hear this band do that one, as well as At Century's End.
