Strange to think such an amazing composer and musician doesn't know what an augmented chord is, lol. I think it shows that ultimately, the ear is the most important.

He's pretty well versed in theory from what I gather. He knows the notes on guitar and teaches theory to his students as far as I know. Das Seelenbrechen was largely improv based so he must know his way around the fretboard.
