Wow, we recently got some European lamps with shades that hang crooked, and my idea was a giant washer which would provide a flat surface for a shim, and here you are with the exact same idea! Funny how minds come to the same solution.

Ikea really needs to include this size adapter with all their shades for USA!! It's been a problem for years! How hard can it be to provide a small plastic adapter this size?? They sell millions in the US... Get it out there Ikea!

I just found this video seven years later. I found a lamp in a thrift store without a shade. An European style shade fits the lamp. I could not find a shade of the right size or color. I had the idea of buying a shade at Ikea...a basic white shade of the right size. I will cover it in fabric. However, as everyone knows it doesn't fit the lamp. I was looking for a solution when I found this video. You can cut a wider circle in the flat Ikea adapter and use it instead of using cardboard or trying to find a washer. It fits perfectly.

I have 2 beautiful hobnail milkglass lamps that were my mothers. She purchased them from the Jewel Tea Company if memory serves years ago. Unfortunately while the milkglass bodies of the lamps are intact the globes are long gone as well as the hardware they nested in if you know what I'm talking about as I'm at a loss as to what the technical name for the hardware might be. I lucked upon two beautiful milkglass globes at a garage sale that I am hoping will fit with the right hardware. Any clue where I might find such hardware? I'm really excited about repurposing these lamps from the late 1950's.

This is why I always hesitate to buy things at Ikea. They are always sizes that are problematic.

I think the true lesson here is to resist the urge to buy IKEA lamps. They're just too weird! Unless you want to consider them completely disposable, you'll probably have problems trying to fix them. Also, pay attention to the bulb size! So many cute lamps take weird bulbs that you'll have to keep in stock. My policy is, if it doesn't take a regular medium base bulb, I'm not buying it, as I only want to stock one type of light bulb. This comes in handy when you can find lightbulbs on sale, as you can buy a lot of just one kind.

U do know u can get the ring adapter off Amazon for a uk fitting, or a European fitting most lamp shades come with them u can take it of or leave it on but yah Amazon sells the ring adapters

Hi Henry. Thank you for the video (almost half a millions views, congratulations!). Maybe you can save me. I think you have the exact same table lamp as me. Mine some some kind of nut right at the bottom of the base; it doesn't stand up straight. The problem is that I don't know how it looks when it is whole; I wonder if there's any way you could send me a picture of the bottom of that base?

In your opinion, would it work if I just glued the washer to the lamp and then glue the shade base to the washer?? ..or would that be too wobbly? I realize I wouldn't be able to remove the shade, but I would use a glue that would hold but isn't 100% permanent.. (ordering the screw on thingy + a little rewiring = I'd rather throw this lamp out the window and buy a new one lol)

I think I got them at Home Depot. I bought a bunch because I was concerned they would be heard to find. You could certainly get them from Grainger's: www.grainger.com/search/fasteners/washers/flat-washers?tv_optin=true&searchQuery=washers&searchBar=true

I put a dubble piece of zip ties on the side where the lamp was too low to make it even. Where he is putting the washer. Works perfectly, although it would be better if wasn't crooked in the first place

at 1:17 you show the lamp shade and threadded base... and then at 1:28 you show all of the adapters - That round one, at the bottom is supposed to fit in the lamp shade? I'm in the UK and the lamp shades are all like that - in fact that American lamp frame that you show at 1:11 is something I've never seen over here - but well done for hacking it :)

yes the round one at the bottom is the threaded top to that fixture base. The one that is t 2:15

I bought a Nymo 17 inch gorgeous Black Gold lampshade and it didn’t fit my floor lamp . Do you think if I buy an Ikea floor lamp it will work ? I’m looking at their Arstid Brass Floor lamp , but I haven’t found any videos to see if there is compatibility . I contacted ikea and they did not give me a straight answer . Please help me . Im traveling to my closest ikea 180 miles away this week and want to find a lamp base so I can use my beautiful lampshade . Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I assume so. Best bet is to make sure you ring the shade with you and find an appropriate Should be fine. Just bring the shade and make sure you get a floor lamp that works

I got them at OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) But someone also mentioned just cutting out a thick cardboard one as an alternative.

I thought I had solved the problem when I realized I needed to purchase lampshades with the “uno” hardware for my IKEA floor lamp! Little did I know the challenge had just begun. Unfortunately the hardware in the lampshade that I bought was too small to fit over the IKEA lamp’s socket 😂 So, the stem of the bulb won’t connect. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Grainier.com has them, but you have to buy a five pack. If there is a good hardware store near you they should have something that works.

adding the washer should in anyway effect the eletrical connection. Perhaps in diassembly something go lose or re-wiring the socket if you did that?

@@silsurf1 no, it’s just mine was the other way round… the lampshade was too small for the lamp so I stuck a large plastic washer below to how it in place and now the bulb doesn’t fully screw in so the metal hoop in the centre of the lampshade is touching the metal screw threads on the bulb 😬

We get this problem in the Uk all the time even with our ceiling lights. The good old EU have poked their nose in yet again with their stupid ideas and we now have stupid fitting shades with stupid adapters. If you lose the adapter your knackered and can't use the shade. It's not just IKEA shades either.
